Sleep Tight: A Novel | J. H. Markert
25 posts | 28 read | 15 to read
The sole survivor of a serial killer might hold the key to stopping a new spree of murders in this propulsive thriller in the vein of The Black Phone and The Whisper Man. Dark and twisting at every turn, fans of Catriona Ward will love this chilling new tale from the deviously inventive horror author that Peter Farris calls the "clear heir to Stephen King. Beware the one who got away . . . Father Silence once terrorized the rural town of Twisted Tree, disguising himself as a priest to prey on the most vulnerable members of society. When the police finally found his "House of Horrors," they uncovered nineteen bodies and one survivora boy now locked away in a hospital for the criminally insane. Nearly two decades later, Father Silence is finally put to death, but by the next morning, the detective who made the original arrest is found dead. A new serial killer is taking credit for the murder and calling himself the Outcast. The detectives daughter, Tess Claibourne, is a detective herself, haunted by childhood trauma and horrified by the death of her father and the resurgence of Father Silences legacy. When Tesss daughter is kidnapped by the Outcast, Tess is forced to face her worst fears and long-buried memories. With no leads to follow, she travels back to Twisted Tree to visit the boy who survived and see what secrets might be buried in the tangled web of his broken mind. With captivating prose and an old-school horror flair, Sleep Tight is a must-read, haunting tale from a true master of the genre.

I'd say this #audiobook was between a 3.5 and 4 stars read for me. I enjoyed the story, but found myself easily distracted with life around me. This doesn't usually happen to me unless I'm not fully invested which, I guess, means that it wasn't. I think some of the explanation of how and why things were happening the way they did felt a little convoluted. Still a decent book though that I'm glad I read. #audiobook

Continuing on a bad track of books not for me. I thought this was going to be a thriller/horror but instead it‘s a police procedural with a truly unlikeable protagonist. #hailthebail #dnf

Sace Ugh! I hate when a book turns out not to be what you expected. 1mo

“Sleep Tight” is a creepy yet entertaining read that is perfect for those wanting a spooky Halloween read. I will say that I found some ideas/concepts to be a little far fetched and the ending could have been fleshed out more. Not a bad read, but I don‘t find it worth keeping or reading again.

Best book I‘ve read recently! I‘m not usually a big police procedural reader, but this book was phenomenal. Out of the box for me at times too, but so non-stop spooky-thriller, that I just loved it. He also plays with a mental health diagnosis that I really enjoy reading about, so that sold the deal for me.

Overall, this was a fast-paced, creepy thriller. It was a bit chaotic at times, but that probably added to the intensity. And it was definitely intense.

This book was just good the entire time and it had me turning the pages like a crazy person because I needed to find out what was happening. This was a great kickoff to spooky season. This was an excellent thriller. I definitely plan to read more from this author.

Really enjoyed this police procedural/horror book. A little reminiscent of Silence of the Lambs. The dialogue bothered me at times, not a strong part of this book. #BOTM

This was fun and complicated with maybe a bit too many details that really didn‘t take the reader to the story‘s end. I backtracked several times to track what mattered to the resolution. …Sidebar - as a born and bred Montanan, I‘m hyper aware of its random place settings in a story. But I swear, 9 out 10 times, the MT city referenced will be Missoula. 👇

marleed 🤪Also, how the heck am I going to capture on the 9 lines on the back of my index card all the spoilers my mind will need to recall the details of this story! 3mo

Auto buy author. Not disappointed. If you liked the previous books by this author (Mr Lullaby, The Nightmare Man), this one‘s even better. Buy it. Read it. Listen to it. Oh and if I was a first time reader of this author‘s works, cover buy!!

Serial killers, kidnapping/imprisonment, implied violence against children, mental health. To name a few TWs but this is HORROR first, thriller second so it should be expected.

Great story!

GAH! Chilled me to the bone! Tess is a mess but for good reasons as we find out. With all her flaws, you can‘t help really loving her. The cult of all cults with far reaching tentacles, characters within characters, murder, torture, mayhem, so, so many twists and turns, flashbacks, a possible hint to a sequel(?), but an ending that ties things up. So good! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

How did I rate this before I finished it??

High creep factor. Serial killers, evil children, madmen & pedo-adjacent adults.

Twists you won‘t see coming. Halloween read if you need one! 🧟‍♀️🎃👻💀😈🧛‍♂️

A fun one to kick off spooky season reading! Though there‘s a bit of a supernatural element to this one, it‘s really more of a traditional thriller with some of my favorite ingredients—multimedia chapters of interview transcripts & articles, crimes in the past echoing to the present, tension throughout & some family trauma & drama. Fast-paced & hard to put down, this really reminds me of some of my first favorites of the genre! Creepy imagery too!

By turns terrifying and heartbreaking, I knew after the first two chapters that it was going to be a daylight-only read. Marketed as horror, I think it falls more into a thriller category, despite the elements that defy explanation. The short chapters propelled the story at a such a rapid pace, I felt like I couldn‘t catch my breath. Well-written and creepy. Thank you to LibraryThing and Crooked Lane Books for the digital ARC.

Sleep Tight by J.H. Markert is a chilling narrative filled with unexpected twists and harrowing turns. At its core lies the abduction of innocent children, beginning a desperate race against time to locate them before the unthinkable occurs.

I had a blast immersing myself in this gripping dark mystery, which intertwines real-world horrors with inexplicable supernatural phenomena.
