As Old as Time
As Old as Time: A Twisted Tale | Liz Braswell
What if Belle's mother cursed the Beast? As Old as Time is the third book in a new YA line that reimagines classic Disney stories in surprising new ways. When Belle touches the Beast's enchanted rose, memories flood through Belle's mind-memories of a mother she thought she would never see again. And, stranger still, she sees that her mother is none other than the beautiful enchantress who cursed the castle and all its inhabitants. Shocked and confused, Belle and the Beast will have to unravel a dark mystery about their families that is 21 years in the making.

Took a minute to get through because the beginning is so similar to the original story and didn't fully grab my attention. But I loved getting a chance to see what Bells mother is like and love how the book ended. It wasn't a perfect ending, but was still a happy ending!

“And most of them,” Belle observed with a smile, “seem to almost have a happy ending.”

Overall I enjoyed the book. Felt so weird reading such a familiar tale with such different lenses. First half was the old story. Couldn‘t put it down. Felt darker: Belle doesn‘t stop the spell but speeds it up. A race against time to save the castle & servants. The dark of insane asylums housing majik peoples was a surprise. Really liked the buildup to why curse-closer to live action-without forgetting the first. Wish a happier ending: wanted more

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been away for so long. For the sake of time, basically things have not been good at work. It was literally changing me, affecting my everything to the point where I finally broke down and quit a couple weeks ago. I've never quit a job in my life, but it was for the best.

Now I'm just getting back to being me... audiocrafting and focusing on my mental health until I start my new job in a couple of weeks.

I loved the idea of this book! And the story was one I found myself truly enjoying. Though, following the back and forth of time was hard. And I wasn't exactly happy with the ending, but only bc I wanted to know more or go on the adventure with them. With how it was left for more story to come, I do hope the author plans to write more!

My second Disney twisted tale and I loved it! (The first one, not so much - I love Mulan but not Reflection.)

This one, though, oh it's twisted. It was really slow at first but past 70 or so %, it was unputdownable.

The ending wasn't like the movie's but I still liked it. Oh, and the chapter titles! 😘

How does the story of Disney‘s Beauty & the Beast change, if Belle‘s mother is the Enchantress who curses the castle?

A really interesting twist, but not followed through. It felt like there were 2 different stories; Disney‘s and then a darker story with ethnic cleansing and medical experimentation. The tones didn‘t line up, so everything ended up feeling very shallow. & answering questions about the movie just opened new plot holes. 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

Clare-Dragonfly Wow, that‘s an intriguing concept—really unfortunate that it falls flat! 2y
Zoe-h I‘ve read a few books in this series and I quickly learned the Liz Braswell isn‘t the best author who writes for them. If you want a really good one, I recommend 2y
BookmarkTavern @Clare-Dragonfly It‘s always more disappointing when I can so clearly see the bones of a good story! @Zoe-h Thanks for the rec! I‘ll definitely look it up! (edited) 2y

And can I just say, for a 500-page paperback, this book is heavy. Even heavier than some of my hardcovers. I think it's the quality of the paper, it's that good.

This book attempts to twists the movie to fit the tag line "what if Belle's mother cursed the Beast." Yes, I get that this is supposed to be a "twisted tale," but it utterly fails. It fails to have a decent plot. It fails to delve into the characters. It fails to build a magical world. Instead the plot is lame, the characters are flat cartoons (ironic since the story is based on a cartoon movie), & the world-building is non-existent.

wanderinglynn This was my October #doublespin book. 2y

4✨ I really enjoy fairytale retellings and Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairytale. It follows the Disney version of the story and will flash to the present to the past frequently at the beginning. When it stops doing that you have a few mysteries needing solved. There is a bit of morbid content, but it doesn‘t last long. It fills in scenes that you didn‘t know you needed. The morbid content would be my only complaint. This finishes Feb.

Finally read my first Twisted Tale! It was exactly what I hoped for in a Disney fairytale retelling. It also helped iron out some wrinkles in the original story, like the timeline of when the Beast was cursed and at what age. Given that he only had until his 21st birthday, it always confused me. The book had an answer for that!

#happilyeverafterswap! Look at these beauties and an Amazon gift card! Thanks Alyssa! The new covers on ACOTAR are so striking. I‘ll be jumping on Amazon Australia to see what strikes my fancy (I‘ll investigate your suggestion of Heart Blood but probably won‘t buy it with this voucher as my kindle is American - also - I found a Juliet Marillier book on my shelf - Shadowfell - have you read it? Should I add it to my BookSpin for March?)

I thoroughly enjoined this retelling of The Beauty and the Beast.
It had some darker aspects than what was expected. Being published as a “Disney approved” book, I was under the impression that it would be light and fun. But this one really dove into some deeper and more meaningful aspects of my beloved tail.
👇🏻Continues👇🏻

Enchanted_Bibliophile The mystery of what exactly happened all those years ago when a prince was cursed and an enchantress went missing; really enthralled me. And the conclusion was totally not what I assumed it would be; I‘m kind of hoping there would be a follow-up to see how everything turns out in the end 3y

I started this one at the end of January and finished it today. The twisted tales are hit or miss for me, but this retelling of Beauty and the Beast I loved. 🌹

The story tells more about Belle's parents with an interesting twist that links Belle to the Beast. It also gives more background on the village and the Beast's family.

Belle is a lot of things: smart, resourceful, restless. She longs to escape her poor provincial town for good. She wants to explore the world, despite her father‘s reluctance to leave their little cottage in case Belle‘s mother returns a mother she barely remembers. I love reading Disney's reimagining/retelling. This is the first book a A Twisted Tales series that I ever read and I do like it. Of course the similarity is there but I love how the make Belle's mother is the enchantress and still alove. And the ending is totally different and giving us the chance to create our own happily ever after ending.
