Second of Haruf that I have read and second in the Plainsong series. I really enjoy the stories and their connection to strength and grace. I think the writing is great and the characters are personable. Sometimes I wish there was more of a perfect ending to the stories, but that‘s not the style (and not real life either). Interested to read the third book in the series soon.

Thank you @Emilymdxn and your #ALSpine recs for getting me into this trilogy! Part 2 is a bit darker with a strong CW for child abuse, but these characters 😍!

Life continues on the high plains of Colorado, and he again features the cattle rancher brothers and the pregnant teen they helped. New characters include a social worker, who tries to help kids who aren‘t protected from a family member, and Gen X AF kids that are caring for their adults.

Megabooks Running out of things to photograph until spring, so here is a statue! 😂😂 Should have new bookshelves to share on Tuesday. Anyway book 1 if you want to start the trilogy is 2y

Emilymdxn I‘m so glad you‘re enjoying it! The third book is great too but quite separate from the plot of the first two. Im still part way through tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow but I only rly have time for grad school reading and audio 🫠 2y
Megabooks @Emilymdxn I remember that from vet school! Sometimes the only time I had to read was the one Saturday a month I‘d treat myself to a pedicure. I‘d get one or two chapters read and maybe one or two others a week, and it would take me two month to finish I book I‘d usually finish in two days. I wish you the best of luck!! For me, it was difficult but very much worth it when I graduated. 💜💜 2y

I found two more from the Plainsong series at the used bookstore today!! #ALSpine made me do it. 💜 I also picked up one more for #AuthorAMonth because I‘m really connecting with Erdrich! Had to stop by the river to snap some pics, too.

Emilymdxn I really really loved eventide! Fyi, eventide is quite a direct sequel to plainsong but benediction is pretty separate. I was a bit surprised by that but it‘s great to read eventide right after plainsong 2y
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole yes! 😁 2y
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole it‘s so swollen with snow runoff where I am. I saw whole trees floating down. 2y
Megabooks @jlhammar thanks!! The one is set in Holt as well and follows Jack, the high school football player. 2y

Megabooks @Emilymdxn I‘m planning on Eventide this month. It‘s on my upcoming shelf! That‘s good to know about Benediction too. The other one by Haruf follows Jack the football player when he comes back to Holt in his 20s or early 30s after being away awhile. Have you read it? 2y
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole that too in addition to the snow. You‘re in Ohio right? I‘ve got Indiana on my north side. 2y

Kent Haruf was a wonderful writer. This is the 3rd Haruf that I‘ve read (2nd of the Plainsong trilogy), and I‘m again blown away by the quiet, simple beauty of the characters and the authentic feel of the rural/small town settings. Dipping in and out of the lives of several residents of Holt, Colorado, Eventide gives us more time with some familiar Plainsong characters as well as some new folks. Equal parts heartbreaking and joyful.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Tamra I love them! Time for a reread and definitely worthy of it. 3y
sprainedbrain @Tamra it‘s been 5 years since I read Plainsong! I almost reread it before starting this one, but decided to jump in. Definitely rereadable. ❤️ 3y

#BookReport Hadn‘t planned to read How to Walk Away or Eventide but both were enjoyable. X Marks the Scot was for #LitsyAtoZ. I am loving Project Hail Mary on audio. Science isn‘t my thing but Weir writes an engaging story and I love the humor. Captain Wentworth‘s Diary is giving the back story to his and Anne‘s relationship. So far it‘s the best of Grange‘s retellings. #PemberLittens

MallenNC I‘m listening to Project Hail Mary too. I am not a science person either but I enjoyed The Martian and this one is intriguing already. 3y
Cinfhen I went on a Haruf reading binge a little while back…his books were SO GOOD!! I‘m sad he passed away and we won‘t be getting anymore Holt County reads 😔 3y

Texas is so hot and dry right now my backyard looks similar to the Colorado plains!

I really enjoy Kent Haruf‘s writing. I love Harold and Raymond, the old bachelor brothers on their farm, who have spent their entire lives together. They have the sweetest hearts.

I‘ve got at least one more of his books on my TBR shelves, and I‘m looking forward to savoring it. ❤️

Wow....I cannot express how much I loved this book, even better then Plainsong. This was 100% in my wheelhouse. This was a very quiet novel and literary fiction at its core. If you like Jane Smiley you will absolutely love this one.

Just a magnificent follow up to Plainsong. Kent Haruf was a master of capturing everyday triumphs and hardships with the most simplistic prose. I recommend reading Plainsong first. I‘ve already purchased the final book of this trilogy, Benediction. 5 BIG HEARTFELT stars. #InfiniteTissueRead I may go back and reread Our Souls At Night after I read Benediction. I feel like I might have missed subtle references to past characters.

Kent Haruf had a way with words. This is the second book in a series about a community in Holt, Colorado. His writing is simple, almost plain (and no quotation marks!) but somehow it‘s just so beautiful. I didn‘t like this one quite as much as Plainsong; it was so sad, and a bit darker. But there‘s a quiet peace about his books that I just love. I‘m trying to savor them slowly since he passed away and won‘t be writing more.

Tamra He certainly did. 6y

I liked this, but not nearly as much as Plainsong. Got off to a very sluggish start. It was so, so sad and much darker than the first one. I‘ll definitely finish the series but am hoping that the last book returns to the more hopeful tone of the first.

#TBRtemptation post 1! This is the 2nd installment in the Plainsong series. In the town of Holt, Colorado, the aging McPherson brothers are living without Victoria, a single mom they took in who's moved on to college. A lonely boy cares for his grandfather. A disabled couple protects a violent relative. They'll all intersect in marvelous ways. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

I read this beautiful novel at the perfect time, as I was grieving the untimely death of my aunt, the strongest woman I've ever known. There is a quiet power in Haruf's words and stories that soothed my soul, but made my heart ache all the same. I began this sequel shortly after finishing Plainsong and I dare say it's even better.

My god, I love these Kent Haruf books. This one was so achingly sad, and yet so hopeful. Filled with meditative space and and spare sentences. Reading these books is like putting my shriveled sponge of a brain into a pan of warm water. Can't recommend them enough. Apropos of nothing, a picture of my kooky daughter, who I'm missing badly even as I luxuriate in a silent hotel room.

I think Haruf had Joyce on the brain while writing these scenes. Lots of phrases and images similar to the last paragraph of The Dead. It'll be a sad day when I finish reading through everything Haruf wrote.
