Beloved | Toni Morrison

Mehso-so

Beloved is a book that I have tried numerous times, and failed, to read. Finally on the fifth attempt I have completed this book, thanks to the audiobook. I was first drawn to this book in 6th grade when my sister, home from college, spoke about it. Now that I‘ve finally made it all the way through, I‘ve determined that yes it‘s a good story, I just don‘t like the stream of consciousness. But I‘ve read it, finally! #AuthorAMonth #AAMTM

As with all of Morrison‘s work, the story was well written, for me though it was an ok story. I did find myself feeling sorry for Bride and the treatment she experienced with her mother. Maybe if I go back and read the physical book I‘ll enjoy the story more. #AuthorAMonth #AAMTM

Love | Toni Morrison

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this story about the people in and around Bill Cosey‘s life. The most intriguing part of the book for me, was the relationship between Christine and Heed. Such a complex relationship between once friends. This is definitely a book I‘ll pick up again. #AuthorAMonth #AAMTM

A Mercy | Toni Morrison

Pickpick

I enjoyed Morrison‘s examination of the relationships between mothers and daughters and what leads a mother to abandon her daughter in favor of a son. I especially enjoyed reading Morrison‘s early look at slavery and the slave trade in the early days of America. There was so much to digest in such a short book that I‘m sure I missed things and will more than likely return to this one many times. #AuthorAMonth #AAMTM

Skygoddess1 It should also be noted the audiobook has an interview with Morrison about the book and things she covers as well as her research for the book. Definitely give it a listen. 4y
Soubhiville This sounds like one I‘d like to read. 4y
Soubhiville Or listen to! The audio extras sound like that‘s the way to go. 😊 4y
Skygoddess1 I definitely found the interview fascinating @Soubhiville But I think when I go back and re-read it, I‘ll do so with the text to really delve into it. 4y

Song of Solomon | Toni Morrison

Mehso-so

This was just an ok book for me. I feel like if Morrison had made the book longer (the audiobook is 3 hrs) I would‘ve enjoyed it more. My meh feelings towards this book may also be due to my not being a huge fan of magical realism, they tend to be hit or miss books for me. I did however enjoy the Biblical allusions and the characters, Corinthians, Pilate, etc who were named for either a book or person in the Bible. #AuthorAMonth #AAMTM

I really enjoyed the way Morrison looked at the various relationships and interactions between the characters and the way race played a role within them. I especially enjoyed the relationship and banter between Valerian and Sydney, they provided some wonderful comedic interactions. This is a book I will need to get a physical copy of as I see it being one I‘ll read more than once. #AuthorAMonth #AAMTM

The Bluest Eye | Toni Morrison
post image

The Bluest Eye was Toni Morrison‘s first book. Although Morrison‘s prose is beautiful and melodic when read aloud, the story was just ok for me. It was interesting for the most part, it I found that my mind would wander while reading and I‘d have to go back and re-read a passage to understand what was happening. Despite that I‘m glad I read it. TW: rape, pedophilia, animal abuse #AuthorAMonth #AAMTM
