Why Birds Sing: A Novel | Nina Berkhout

Pickpick

A big shout out to @BookNAround for including this in my #bestof2021 swap!

This book - wow. It is beautifully and exquisitely written.

The story of an opera singer who loses the use of her instrument and is forced to lead a class of whistlers.

Growth takes place, lessons are learned, friendships are formed, priorities are re-arranged.

I am not doing this little book justice with this review.

Just read it. Trust me.

BookNAround I‘m so glad you loved it! ❤️ 2y

A scientific survey team, an empty (?) planet, & a security cyborg that calls itself Murderbot. What could possibly go wrong?

This was delightful. We get an immediate sense of who Murderbot is, an introvert with a tendency to sarcasm & trashy media (relatable 😂), & the stakes. Just enough world building to get me curious w/out an info dump. Resolution to the immediate story, but open enough that I immediately put a hold on the sequel. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

swynn Yay Murderbot! 3y

I read 11 book in January. I can say it was a good month. I enjoyed the books I read.

I did only one bingo #BookSpinBingo and I read #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin books. Both are already in the new system @TheAromaOfBooks

Thank you @guinsgirlreads for this 2022 calendar received during #Bestof2021 swap, which I‘m using it for this monthly activity

guinsgirlreads Nice! 👏🏻 3y

I‘m way behind on reviews and checking in with Litsy, and it‘s high time I caught up! So, this was my #Doublespin, and I really enjoyed it. I don‘t read many standalone thrillers for whatever reason (I guess I prefer to spend time with the same characters?) but this was a gift in my #bestof2021 swap box from @MaleficentBookDragon and boy it was a terrific pick. My first Ruth Ware! Perfect for snowy, cold, January! @TheAromaofBooks

MittenGirlPeach I took this pic last night. The calm before the storm? 3y

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! Are you also scheduled for a lot of weather? They are being quite vague as to how much rain/ice/snow we are going to get, but right now they are saying a half inch of ice! 😬 I'd much rather have the snow! 3y
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks we‘re in the 12-16 inches forecast, the heaviest swath, and since we don‘t have to go out in it we‘re really looking forward to it! We‘ve had so little snow this winter; this will probably be our only big storm. I‘ll post pictures as the storm progresses! 3y
TheAromaofBooks Oh I'm so jealous!!! I honestly love snow, and those times when you can just cozy right down and watch it happen are the BEST! I saw that Detroit was looking at the possibility of a top-5-of-all-time-storm-snowfall and even just an hour or so north of here is in the 8-12“ band, but we'll probably just get ice with a dusting of snow on it like usual lol Can't wait to see your pics!!! 3y
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks I feel exactly the same about winter! It‘s starting with rain as predicted right now; I‘ll be up early to chronicle the progress! 3y

Out of the 66 books I finished this year, 29 were nonfiction. These are the top 10 of those 29.

Special mention to The Library Book, Exercised, The Lost City of Z, and The Debt Trap which were all so close to making the list, and perhaps would have on a different day.

Trashcanman I Love NF too. Beautiful list ❤️ 3y
shanaqui Oooh. I need to take notes on these; I need more non-fic. I read more fiction, but I go through my non-fic backlog so much faster, somehow. 3y
Chelsea.Poole Great list! 3y

2021 was a great reading year for me. I finished 66 books and 21,200 pages, both of which are new records for me. Of those 66 books, 37 were fiction. Here are my top 10 fiction books of 2021!

Also, special mention to The Ghost Variations which came very close to making my top 10.

A slim but thoughtful read. Very evocative with powerful prose. A simple man feels called to action on Christmas Eve. Using for #Pop22 #OneSittingRead would also work for #FavoriteSeason if you prefer #Winter Thanks to @TrishB and @Kdgordon88 for putting this on my #ReadersRadar - it was also on Erik Karl Anderson‘s #BestOf2021 #Scribd 🎧

Megabooks 👍🏻👍🏻 3y
TrishB I don‘t think I‘d call it my best read 🤷‍♀️ but I like more meaty books. Like at least a couple of hundred pages!! 3y

Cinfhen It‘s a 3 star read for now but I might bump it up @TrishB @Megabooks I prefer these shorter but powerful reads as opposed to long drawn out meatier tomes 3y
TrishB That‘s why there‘s books for all us I guess ❤️ 3y
Cortg I like the big, meaty chunksters but enjoy shorter books in between! Nice job with the challenges! 3y
Cinfhen I‘m starting to really appreciate these slim but succinct books @Cortg they manage to pack a punch in a short amount of space 3y
Cathythoughts I‘m looking forward to this one 3y
Cinfhen I think you‘ll appreciate this little gem @Cathythoughts it‘s a really quick read but it leaves a long impression 3y

Just got home and just opened my #BestOf2021Swap #BestOf2021 and I can't say THANKYOU Enough to @Avanders everything in this package is absolutely perfect. I love the books love the candle, the reading socks seem super cozy. And I will use them tomorrow. Can't wait to dig into all of the books Sanderson has been on my "Author to read eventually list" for sometime so I am very excited about that. Thank you again for everything.

rsteve388 @Avanders where did you get that pretty silver paper?! It's gorgeous. 3y
Avanders Yay!! I‘m so glad you like everything 😄♥️🎆 Oh the paper — that was a 2020 find at The Container Store — I‘m a bit obsessed with wrapping paper 🤭 3y
rsteve388 I have one of those stores here in CO. 3y

Avanders Ooooh they‘re so fun. They put out Christmas paper usually after Halloween… I try to get in there early, before the really popular ones start going out of stock! 3y
rsteve388 Ahhh I am late to the game. 3y
rsteve388 @Avanders I just finished Skyward today it was an excellent read! Thank you so much for the book. I can't wait to read the second book in the series. 2y

The anticipation builds! So many good things to open in my #bestof2021 box !

We had my brother & nephew here for our annual New Years get-together this weekend, and of course we missed 2020, so it was extra special. We also lost my sister-in-law last March, so it was extra emotional. I realized after they‘d left this morning I had my beautiful swap box to open, and here we are!
