pickThis is a masterclass in psychological thriller writing. I was expecting a cosy crime, but, while this starts off bright and breezy, it‘s turns more and more dark as the characters start to question their understanding of part of their family history.

so-soAt first, I thought the title implied the unruliness of royalty from Alfred to Elizabeth I. Oh, no. It is David Mitchell's irreverent, and sometimes, irrelevant, and a lot of times, blasphemous humor. It was like Finding Waldo. Where are the facts in the midst of a three page rant of why Hollywood killed James Bond? I know he wrote it during the covid lockdown. He must have been so bored. pickThis novel has one of the most psychologically evil fictional characters I have ever met. Be forewarned—parts of this are very difficult to read due to the actions taking place and the pure sinister behavior of one of the characters. We hear the story through Gillian, who as a woman in her 70s is reminded of a troubling episode in her teenage life, prior to WWII, when she visits the home of her friend Violet Claybourne over winter break. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

pickI had no idea what the hell was going on in this book, and I do love when that happens! I enjoyed the supernatural aspect, the homage to Rosemary‘s Baby, and how Unger made the apartment building seem like a character. Very atmospheric and twisty!

pickNo murder but Lord Wimsey trusts his gut and investigates anyway. He finds motive and countless suspicious circumstances but no evidence of murder, until another person dies. And no evidence that it was murder. The hint of racism appears again and that turned me off quite a bit so that I won‘t continue the series. Saved, just barely, by some instances of lol humor and a nice analysis of how changes in laws create motives for murder. #authoramonth
