The Long Walk | Stephen King

Pickpick

This is one of my favorite of King's books. I can't wait to see the movie this September.
Set in a dystopian America, 100 boys are chosen for the long walk, where they walk until only one is left. If they stop, if they try to leave, if they are too injured to continue, they are shot dead. Ray has signed up to be in the walk. How far will he get? It's so bleak but so engaging 🖤

I didn't care for James Franco's narration of the audiobook, but otherwise I loved the story. It's hard not to think about today's politics when reading this book, though it was written over 45 years ago.

This month‘s book is #firestarter Grab your copy and check back at the end of the month for open discussion! Don‘t forget to tag me so I can see which version you have! #LosersClub #StephenKing #StephenKingInOrder #KingFromTheBeginning #ConstantReader #ReadAlong #BuddyRead

Bookwormjillk I‘m still working on The Dark Half which I read accidentally last month. Then I have the new one and this which both came in from the library at the same time. It‘s going to be a King filled month. Not complaining because to me Stephen King=Summer reading. 6d
bekakins This is one of my absolute faves! I used to have a hardback omnibus of The Eyes of the Dragon & Firestarter and it was proper comfort reading for me whenever I was off sick from school 6d

JessClark78 I just finished The Stand. I‘ll catch up this month. 5d
BarkingMadRead @JessClark78 I am still reading the Stand 🙈 it‘s a reread of a reread of a reread times 100 for me so I‘ve been reading a chapter a day 🤣 5d

I‘m not sure how this one ended up on my Libby holds list since it‘s not going to be on the #losersclub schedule anytime soon but instead of delivering later yet again I was like ok let‘s read her! I know this was meant to be scrapped but I loved it so much and I can‘t get the story out of my mind. I‘m catching up on the adaptations too. As you can see, it‘s very meme-able. 😅 ⬇️

MatchlessMarie I plan on making some oatmeal cookies (referenced in the book) later today as well since I‘m already making another book referenced cookie today. Cookie party! 7d

April‘s #losersclub pick but read in May. It was physically exhausting getting through this one as someone who struggles with daytime drowsiness reading about how tired all these guys were. 🫩 Which maybe made it a more immersive experience? 😂 I did find the 4mph rule distracting since I was listening to the audio. Holding a conversation is taxing at 3mph let alone 4 so I had to suspend disbelief in that aspect. ⬇️

MatchlessMarie I believe they have lowered the mph rule for the adaptation which I am looking forward to seeing in September. The cranked up existential dread made up for the tediousness and made this a pick for me. 7d

Welcome to the #LosersClub open discussion for #thedeadzone
Please be mindful of spoilers. We have new readers to King who haven‘t read all of his books. When referencing his other work, please keep this in mind for our new-to-King friends. Don‘t forget to tag each other in the comments so your friends can see your reply. Have fun!

BarkingMadRead I know that this was a political book, please make sure your comments are kind. 1w
Leftcoastzen Love your well loved old copy! 1w
BarkingMadRead @Leftcoastzen I had to tape part of the binding this time! 🙈 this poor old thing 1w

TieDyeDude I listened to this on audio, narrated by James Franco. It was a tough listen because Franco sounded completely uninterested. I really enjoyed the foreshadowing used by King, like the seemingly random lightning rod salesman. It was a long road to get to the events of the conclusion, but I loved the ride. I'd like to re-read a physical copy in the future; I feel like I'd like it even more without Franco's droning... 1w
BarkingMadRead @TieDyeDude ugh how disappointing! 1w
Bookwormjillk SHOOT! I accidentally got The Dark Half instead. I always mix those up. 😂

Not finished yet but I'm enjoying it. Re-read The Dead Zone a few years back and liked that too.

Bklover This is one of my favorites. Not sure why, except I remember reading it when it first came out. I loved it then, (I was 19), and I still reread it occasionally. It still holds up as one of my favorites. 1w
kwmg40 Like @TieDyeDude, I disliked James Franco's narration, but otherwise I loved the story, and it really is hard not to think about today's political situation while reading this book. 6d
kwmg40 After finishing the book, I immediately watched the 1983 adaptation, which I thought was very good. My only complaint is that it was so condensed. All the plot elements were there (with some minor changes) but so many details that contributed to the character development were cut. 6d

After a trip to urgent care this morning because of severe shoulder pain that turned into bad news (Degenerative Disc Disease in my cervical spine), I'm at home resting and ready to #JumpStartSummer. Reading and tea fixes everything, right?! I'll be reading the tagged book, The Dead Zone for #LosersClub, and Disenchanted for #BookSpin. I might even get to a couple of other books I checked out from the library since I won't be doing much else.

JenlovesJT47 Hope you feel better! Neck pain is the worst! 💚💚💚 2w
TheSpineView Poor thing! Feel better! Get some rest and read. 2w
Fortifiedbybooks @JenlovesJT47 thank you, and, yes, it is! With my back (I already have DDD in my lumbar spine), I can usually find a position that is at least mostly comfortable. I can't seem get away from this though, but at least a lidocaine patch and my microwaveable neck wrap is helping a bit. 2w
JenlovesJT47 Solidarity! I can never find a comfortable position unfortunately. The lidocaine patches are a lifesaver when I get bad flare ups. Happy reading and feel better soon 💚 2w
