The Many Lives of Mama Love | Lara Love Hardin
post image
Pickpick

I work alongside people who are struggling with addiction and have witnessed many moments when people have shared their pasts, some in personal conversations with fear in their eyes that they would see judgement in mine and some publicly when they were in a place to give hope to others. Hardin‘s memoir about her journey with addiction, jail, and shame really touched me. Thank you @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks for sending it my way.

Swan Song | Robert R. McCammon

I‘m adding this one to my list of favorites. This is a chunkster (917 pages) but so worth the time. We follow different survivors after nuclear missiles have ravaged the world. As they move across the country, some will come together to rebuild and some to destroy, but they will all meet to fight for good or evil. I loved many of the characters and even shed a few tears. #Booked2023 #GiftedbyaLitten

Bookzombie Thank you @Reggie for this one. I‘m so glad I finally read a McCammon book. It was so good. 1y
Reggie Yayyyyyy. Sometimes when I‘m at a funeral and they say Amen, I think to myself- that‘s the password. Lol. There was a lot to love and be scared of in this book. And he‘s good at mixing the human heart with the horror. Glad you liked it, Margie. 🖤🖤🖤 1y
Bookzombie @Reggie Lol. I was just sitting here thinking about Job‘s mask and what would our inside face look like. Also, while I would have loved Paul to have survived, his final act killing “Lord” Alvin was very satisfying. 1y

Blame: A Novel | Michelle Huneven

Another deep, quiet book this month. This exploration of grief and forgiveness was very good.

Patsy wakes up hungover in jail. She figures it‘s just another DUI until she finds out a mother and daughter are dead. She joins AA in prison, and you follow her there and then after she‘s released and in a sober marriage. The last bit 20 years later was quite a surprise, but I wish Huneven had dug more deeply into Patsy‘s time with the victims‘ family.

Megabooks New bookshelves in progress!! So far, I‘m quite pleased, but things are a mess! Thank you for sending this @Cinfhen 😘😘 #GiftedByALitten #Booked2023 @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae (edited) 1y

Migrations: A Novel | Charlotte McConaghy

Loved this book to pieces. Beautifully melancholy, and quietly chilling, I was swept away by this heartbreaking story. In a near future, an environmental dystopia where few creatures remain, Franny finds a ragtag found family of fishermen, to take her on her journey. Whilst following the few remaining Arctic terns on their final epic migration, we slowly learn of the trauma of her past. The writing is so gorgeous, I couldn‘t put this down.

KarenUK Thank you so much @barbarabb 💕 1y

All the love for this one ♥️
It‘s about grief, parenting, racism, colonialism, mother/daughters and then intermingled with a literary tour. Learned so much, without it being preachy or annoying. Really made me think. And so much love for Della.
#booked2023 #giftedbyalitten thank you @CarolynM

squirrelbrain Perfect review! I felt too that I learned so much, about ‘English‘ literature as well as about Indigenous Australian culture, but it didn‘t feel forced at all. 1y
TrishB @squirrelbrain I‘m up for that literary tour! 1y
CarolynM Lovely review. I 'm so glad you enjoyed. I particularly liked the way it showed everything (places, people, ideas) through the eyes of both mother and daughter with their different experiences and memories as filter. I thought it was really well done. 1y

Thoughts so far-
Wrongly incarcerated - Just Mercy
New in 23- ? I‘m sure there will be many!
Modern take- The Weight of Blood- meant to be a retelling of Carrie- which is a horror classic 😁
Short story- ? - I do have many choices, so will just have to pick one nearer the time
Set in 2 times- This is How
Starts with W- Widowland

Cinfhen Just Mercy is SOOOO GOOD!!! I‘m loving your ideas 💡 1y
squirrelbrain I was just about to comment that Just Mercy is so good, but @cinfhen beat me to it! 😁 1y

TrishB @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain that‘s good to hear! It was also gifted off Cindy but unfortunately can‘t use for 2 😁 but I‘m not short of gifted books thankfully! 1y
squirrelbrain Yes, that‘s one prompt that‘s rather easy! #giftedbyalitten 1y
Oryx And I'm just jumping in to also say Just Mercy is incredible 🙂 @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain 1y
TrishB @Oryx and now I‘ve got to wait until January! 1y
Bookzombie I like your take on a classic retelling. I will have to keep that in mind. 🙂 1y
BarbaraBB Just Mercy does sound good indeed! 1y
TrishB @Bookzombie always room for a bit of flexibility 😁 1y

Here are my books for #booked2023 that I already have on my physical shelves. As well as these I‘ve managed to find a ‘free‘ book for every prompt, either through Scribd or the physical or digital libraries.

I‘ll tag those below in comments. For a few of the prompts I have many to choose from, so haven‘t tagged those. Those prompts are; #propernounintitle, #newin2023, #titlestartswithvorw, #inmemoriam and #giftedbyalitten

squirrelbrain #amoderntakeonaclassic - I think lots of us are reading this one! 1y
squirrelbrain #ashortstorycollection - recently published and getting great reviews 1y
Amiable All free —nice! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 1y
Soubhiville The Winners! That‘s a good choice for the trilogy prompt, I‘d better put in a library hold now. (It looks a good deal longer than the other two!) 1y
TrishB Thank you 😁 features a love triangle is going to be a tough one for me! 1y
charl08 Loved Marzahn, hope you enjoy it. 1y
Cinfhen Ohhhh well done 🙌🏻 I own this one and have definitely heard it‘s weird 1y
squirrelbrain I‘ll let you know if I read a good book that just *happens* to include a love triangle! @TrishB 1y
squirrelbrain @Soubhiville - it‘s got quite small writing too! I may actually re-read the first one in the trilogy anyway, as I‘ve not read the second one at all so don‘t want to pitch straight into number 3 yet! 1y
LeeRHarry I‘ll be interested to hear your thoughts on The Core of the Sun and Euphoria in particular having read them reasonably recently - and I definitely think you‘re right re Demon Copperhead 😊 looks like you have lots of great reading ahead! 1y
Megabooks Great choices! 1y
squirrelbrain @LeeRHarry - looking at the reviews here on Litsy, neither of them is great. 😬 I‘m fairly sure I‘ll stick with Euphoria but I‘m not sure about the other one yet…. 1y

As you said @Caroline2 , this was a lovely cosy read. Perfect for evenings by the fire!

I just had to share the fabulous back of the cover, which I hadn‘t even noticed until @LeahBergen pointed it out!

I‘m using this for #booked2022 #makeyourownprompt, which is #giftedbyalitten. This was my Blind Date with a Book from @CGainor3 when we had our Litsy meet-up #readingretreat at the end of last year -thank you Catherine!

Mitch That‘s really sweet 2y
LeahBergen I was mightily impressed by it. 😆 2y
CGalinor3 Very true, it's a lovely cosy read! 😊 2y

Mehso-so

What in the absolute fuck did I just read? Seriously...I have no words. None.

I'm not sure if this is humour or horror but it's a whole lot of cringey mind-fuck wrapped in a messy "wait....what...seriously?" candy coating. I have no idea if I liked it because I have no idea what just went on. @BookishTrish Did you read this? I'm so confused ??
