Bridget Jones meets Twin Peaks in this black comedy about a woman's retreat to a remote Australian town and the horrors awaiting her. It wasn't just the bad breakup that turned Eleanor Mellett's life upside down. It was the cancer. And all the demons that came with it. One day she felt a bit of a bump when she was scratching her armpit at work. The next thing she knew, her breast was being removed by an inappropriately attractive doctor, and she was subsequently inundated with cupcakes, besieged by judgy support groups, and the ungrateful recipient of hand-knitted sweaters from her mum. Luckily, Eleanor finds that Talbingo, a remote little town, needs a primary-school teacher. Their Miss Barker upped and vanished in the night, despite being the most caring teacher ever, according to everyone. Unfortunately, Talbingo is a bit creepy. It's not only the communion-wine-swigging priest prone to rants about how cancer is caused by demons. Or the unstable, overly sensitive kids, always going on about Miss Barker and her amazing sticker system. It's living alone in a remote cabin, with no phone service or wifi, wondering why there are so many locks on the front door, and who is knocking on it late at night. Riotously funny, deeply unsettling, and surprisingly poignant, Shirley Barrett's The Bus on Thursday is a wicked, weird, wild ride for fans of Maria Semple, Stephen King and Henry James's The Turn of the Screw. And when have those three writers ever appeared in the same sentence?

A woman whose life has been turned upside down takes a teaching job in a weird, isolated Australian town. A lot of shit happens, some of it unsettling, some of it confusing, some of it funny. I think Barrett was clever in the way she revealed things (or didn't), but the payoff was unsatisfying and I was put off by the informal tone of the narrator. Lots of "So, anyway..." and YELLING CAPS TO CONVEY BIG FEELINGS. Not really my flavor but ⭐⭐⭐

Addison_Reads @readordierachel Great review! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way about the ending. I am curious though to read future books by this author. There was something in her writing style that I really liked, but the story just went too off the rails for me in the end. 4d
CarolynM I agree about the ending, and I found some of it quite upsetting, but I also thought it was very entertaining. 4d
readordierachel @Addison_Reads I would definitely try something else from her in the future. She's funny and clever. Just didn't stick the landing. 4d

Reggie I loved how untrustworthy she was. Lol, how her exbf maybe wasn‘t a horrible person after all. Yeah that ending.... where does the bus go?!!! 4d
readordierachel @Reggie Haha, yes I liked that reveal as well. How Barrett kept revealing how unhinged she really was. But omg, that damn bus! I'm wondering now if she was dead? And that's, like, the bus to hell or something? 3d
vivastory I have this checked out from the library, might wait awhile. Great pic BTW 2d

Book 9 finished for #screamathon @4thhouseontheleft

First off, I'm not sure why this is listed in the horror genre. It started out interesting and even though the main character was unpredictable and neurotic, I was enjoying it. Then she moves to a small town where the last school teacher mysteriously disappeared, and this story starts falling apart. Sadly, the ending didn't help and just left me frustrated.

readordierachel I just read this too! Felt the same about the ending. 4d

The first part of the book was good, but it all went downhill for me when the MC got the new job in a remote mountain town. I did not find it funny at all, nor scary - it was just too bizarre! I finished the book hoping to get some closure but nope, nothing. There must be some meaning to all this, but I did not get it. 🤔

BooknerdsLife That‘s exactly how I felt about this book too!!! It‘s a shame it started off great then it all turned upside down! 😾 3mo

This started out funny and sarcastic, but then... I'm not really sure what happened. I feel like this book may have gaslighted me. I'm not sure what to think.

My strongest impression though was one of frustration, because there's no way a male character would have been written as Eleanor was.

It was a quick and compelling read - I finished it in a day.

#lmpbc #groupx #theaussies
@CarolynM @thegreensofa @LapReader @BecH

CarolynM I think I would have found this even more disquieting if the protagonist had been male. But a lot of what happened was because she was female - there was some serious toxic masculinity on display from other characters. 9mo
Sarz @CarolynM I think it's because of her gender that we're left questioning what happened. Because her crazy behaviour is potentially believable. If it was a male, there'd be no question - we'd assume brain cancer. 9mo
CarolynM @Sarz But if she'd been male the other characters would have behaved differently toward her so her behaviour in response would have been different. I can't imagine a man being harassed the way she was. (edited) 9mo

Another current read, 80% in and I'm still not sure if I like it or not. It's a quirky story about cancer survivor who took up a teaching job at a remote countryside and soon found out what happened to the teacher before her and all the weird things that happen there...It started off quite funny but the occasional foul language& bad teaching attitude are making me uncomfortable 😅

This opens strongly with observations about cancer treatment that had me laughing out loud. The narrator has a cynical, biting sense of humour that I found refreshing & v funny in parts - like a good friend telling you a story, no holds barred. But she becomes unlikeable (a bad teacher, violent & irrational) & the story overblown, so I stopped caring. It‘s been compared to Twin Peaks or Fargo but too farcical. Lively writing & voice; so-so story.

Cinfhen I think I‘m gonna pass - I don‘t do well with cynicism 9mo
CarolynM I agree that it gets harder and harder to laugh as the book goes on. I started off sympathising with her but became increasingly uncomfortable with her behaviour. I liked it overall, though🙂 9mo
Abailliekaras @Cinfhen i know what you mean - it does verge on snarky at times but she‘s self-aware about it which I liked. 9mo
Abailliekaras @CarolynM I agree! It‘s between a so-so and a pick. I‘m still deciding. 😬 9mo

What the heck did I just read there? This book is so weird that it feels like you‘re watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show after having drunk two bottles of wine. The narrator is a horrible person, the story is totally whacky but still it has a certain appeal. I‘d give it 3/5 stars.

Reggie It was all over the place, huh? 10mo
CarolynM It really is a strange one, isn't it? It sails awfully close to the wind on some sensitive issues, but it bounds along at such a pace I think it would be hard to actively dislike it. 10mo

They say it‘s Bridget Jones meets the Exorcist but I think it leans more on Bridget. We meet Eleanor and the most horrific thing that happens is that she gets breast cancer within the first 20pgs. and loses a breast, her job, and this all after she lost her bf. She moves to the middle of nowhere to teach at a small school. And you root for her up until you realize she might not be the most reliable narrator. But she still makes you laugh. This👇🏼

Reggie Was light on horror but it had the scariest vacuum cleaner salesman demonstration I‘ve ever read. Lol Totally a pick!!!! 11mo

A cancer survivor takes a job in a remote Australian village as a schoolteacher after her predecessor mysteriously disappears. The narrator is probably a sociopath and everyone else in the story is totally unpleasant, which made the whole thing sort of funny. There were parts so cringeworthy you couldn‘t help but nervously laugh to yourself, or mumble “Jesus fucking Christ...” under your breath. I really enjoyed it, so 4 out of 5 stars from me.

Oh. My. Gursh. This turned out to be NOTHING like I thought it would in the best way possible. First I thought it was like Christopher Moore wrote Wicker Man, and then it took some reeeaally dark turns. This is a weird mystery with a “hot mess” protagonist, and would be great for a book club as there‘s a lot to discuss about mental illness, cancer, life as a 30-something, coercive control, and a what just happened?-style debatable ending. 5 ⭐️s

In its best moments, this has the humor and horror of My Best Friend‘s Exorcism. But, here the horror is less well-developed and at times I was more confused than scared. I loved Eleanor‘s voice and snark at the outset, but it fizzled out as the novel progressed. #netgalley

I loved the start of this but felt it trailed off towards the end. Can definitely see it as a film but the first person blog format couldn‘t entirely carry the narrative for me. Eleanor was a snappy, hilarious character but didn‘t feel she got enough of an arc over the course of the book.
