Bookwormjillk I was kind of surprised they both went. I thought it would just be her. Thanks @barkingmadread 1w
mcctrish Thank you for leading us #iwillnevernotbemad 1w

TheAromaofBooks Thank you for guiding us through this one!! This is my second George Eliot book and I am here to say that it will also be my last 😂 What even was the point of this. 1w
dabbe The ending infuriated me. All the pages ... on and on ... such descriptions ... blah blah blah ... then BAM! Dead in one chapter. The end. #wtf? 😳 And what kind of marriage will Lucy and Stephen have. I'd always think that his true love was Maggie. What kind of marriage can come from that? At least MIDDLEMARCH had a happy ending! 1w
mcctrish @dabbe I am so mad!!! Maggie is smarter than her father, smarter than her brother, Philip is her intellectual match but he‘s a cripple so that‘s a no, Stephen is a lightweight and her cousin‘s choice so that‘s a no, let‘s kill her off cuz that‘s the fitting thing to do #knowyourplacegirls ENRAGED I am 1w
KAO Stunned! It actually crossed my mind that the author was tired of this story or didn‘t know how to end it—so, ta daa! A dangerous flood occurs to shut it all down with fatal consequences! The End. Argh! Ah well, thanks for leading us through this one, @BarkingMadRead! 1w
Ruthiella Thank you @BarkingMadRead for once again leading us through the breach! I likely would have not read this otherwise. I‘m glad to have it under my belt, even though it was a frustrating read at times. 1w
eeclayton Joining the #wtf club. It was interesting to realize that out of the 3 times we saw Maggie in a boat, the only time she was safe was when she was threatened by the flood, floating with no male companion in the vessel. But the I still don't understand why the siblings had to be killed off like this.
Thanks @barkingmadread for leading us through another difficult read that I would probably have given up on without our lovely group 💕

dabbe All hail @BarkingMadRead, the hostess with the mostest! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Thanks for leading us yet again through a challenging read with an unbelievable #wtf ending. On to Ms. Gaskell! Love this #hashtagbrigade! 😍 1w
Clare-Dragonfly Bleh! All the flooding and drowning was definitely foreshadowed effectively… but bleh! Thanks for leading us @TheAromaofBooks 😘 1w
AllDebooks Wow, what a cop out of an ending. Thank you @BarkingMadRead for keeping us sane and amused through yet another chunker 😊 1w
Leftcoastzen Thank you @BarkingMadRead all that for that ending ?😡🤬 1w
BarkingMadRead @Leftcoastzen @AllDebooks @dabbe that ending was garbage 🙄 1w
julieclair @AllDebooks I agree 💯. So disappointing after aaaalllllll those pages. @BarkingMadRead You are the best leader ever! 1w
kwmg40 I feel the same way as everyone else about that ending. Thank you @BarkingMadRead for hosting! I'm sorry I didn't contribute much to the discussion but I did enjoy following along with the #hashtagbrigade. 7d

5feet.of.fury 1 paragraph that was 3.5 pages long. And that‘s all I got out of it, Ivan wrote a poem lol 1y

BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury it was a little mind numbing 1y
Cuilin Just realized I put my comment on the wrong post. 🤦‍♀️ seriously all that talk of cruelty to children. I don‘t know how Alyosha eat his soup and preserves. 1y
AllDebooks @5feet.of.fury 😅🤣 1y
SamAnne That chapter was just too much…. 1y
TheAromaofBooks Like I kind of got that Ivan was trying to prove that God doesn't really exist because suffering does, particularly the suffering of innocents. But I also felt like he was definitely ignoring/glossing over some critical pro-faith arguments while pretending like he was addressing them. 1y
mcctrish Shut. Up. Ivan. #ivanhasastupidexpressiononhisface @Cuilin exactly! Aloysha finally gets to sit down and eat something and fucking Ivan goes off on child abuse 1y
Bookwormjillk That was dark you guys 1y
currentlyreadinginCO This poem is going to be something 😂 1y
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣 1y
Aimeesue Ursula K. Le Guin based a story on one of the ideas Ivan tosses out in this chapter - "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas." (edited) 1y

Bookwormjillk That was really a lot. At one point I think I blacked out and came to a few pages later but they were still talking about who knows what. 1y

BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk it felt like 100 years 🤣 longest chapter ever 🤣 1y
5feet.of.fury @Bookwormjillk 1/2 of the chapter was just 1 whole loooooooong paragraph! It was too much lol 1y
Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk @5feet.of.fury 😂 I died a little inside when I saw that wall of text. 1y
willaful I'll be honest, I gave up reading days ago. Still enjoying the comments though. 😊 1y
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella @5feet.of.fury I‘m so glad I wasn‘t the only one! @willaful maybe it will get better and you can jump back in 🤞🏻🤞🏻 1y
currentlyreadinginCO Yeah idk bout this church and state debate... 1y
emz711 Loving the Monty Python picture ;) 1y
TheBookHippie For a moment I thought I was back in Les Mis stuck in the sewers… 😵‍💫😅👀😮‍💨 1y
KAO Today‘s word that sent me scurrying for a definition: Ultramontanism. (From Britannica.com “in Roman Catholicism, a strong emphasis on papal authority and on centralization of the church.”) Whew! What a chapter! 1y
BarkingMadRead @emz711 as soon as someone said tripping monks, i thought of this. I mean, they‘re not tripping, but still. I kind of wanted to whack myself in the head for this whole chapter so it totally fit. 1y
TheAromaofBooks I was expecting this book to be depressing; was not anticipating being bored to death 😂 1y
dabbe Imagine how everyone would have continued going on & on & on & on if they really were tripping. Holy guacamole, was that a loooooonnnnnnnggggggg chapter. #toomuchtimeontheirhands 💤💤💤 1y
BarkingMadRead @dabbe I laughed way too hard at this 🤣 1y
CatLass007 Okay, I just finished listening to this and I am lost. I can‘t really figure out who is making which argument and I‘m not sure I care anymore. But I kind of understand the arguments. Socialism and Communism were on the rise and as we all know there was a revolution in Russia. Two things that happened were the murders of the royal family and the abolishment of religion. This argument is a foreshadowing of those events. 1y
Daisey @Bookwormjillk @5feet.of.fury @Ruthiella So long! I also tuned out for a bit. This book brought us in with a couple short chapters and now this. 1y
mcctrish Firstly, crossing by my legs, if ever there was a blah, it was followed by a blah, blah, blah. Secondly, recrossing my legs, I had forgotten that in order for Russia to abolish religion, it had to have it ( in spades) @CatLass007 is right with her points. Thirdly, more recrossing of legs, @willaful I laughed out loud at your comment #letskeepchurchandstateseperate (edited) 1y
Ruthiella @TheAromaofBooks OMG that made me laugh! 😆🤣😂 Bring on the depressing misery! 1y
Aimeesue @TheAromaofBooks 🤣🤣🤣 1y
Vansa Sorry if I'm late to this, is there a readalong happening of this? I would like to join! Is it a chapter a day? I haven't been on Litsy in a while! 1y
BarkingMadRead @Vansa yes! We are reading a chapter a day! I can add you to the tag list if you‘d like 1y
Vansa Please add me! I'll catch up by this weekend. Which translation would you recommend? 1y
BarkingMadRead @Vansa oh gosh, I have no idea! Maybe do a hashtag search of #hashtagbrigade and see what everyone has? I know there are a few different versions and some of the wording has been different, but I don‘t think it‘s been anything too crazy 1y
SamAnne Catching up. The Bros aren‘t the most enticing Mexican beach read. 😂 But I like this chapter from the standpoint of what ends up happening in Russia. 1y
