“Ahead of her time, she challenged a patriarchal system & a doctor-dominated world, compelling both to be better & fairer. She did it all alone, bolstered only by her belief that she was right, in a world that continually told her she was wrong. She fought every day of her life to make things better, dedicating her life to others, wanting justice for all.” Finally finished this #shesaid selection. So good, nonfiction that doesn‘t read like NF.

ncsufoxes The obstacles Elizabeth faced back then are some of the same that women face today. The stigmas of mental health & women being lessened are still all very prevalent today, sadly. Elizabeth was an inspiring woman that fought the system even when the odds were insurmountable. It‘s amazing what she accomplished at a time when society was so against her. #Fthepatriarchy 22h

Time to read more scary sh!t. Few pages in & it‘s like a playbook for the current administration. My daughter could start in band/orchestra this year at her school. She chose the cello. The instrument is about as big as her but she is excited. We are trying to match her enthusiasm as we listen to the sweet (screeching) sounds as she‘s learning how to play. She was adamant that she wanted to play the cello from the start. She‘s also seen someone on YouTube play “Pink Pony Club” on cello & it‘s motivated her more.

Aims42 Yay! Love this 🥰 I played the viola from 5th thru 7th grade. Good times, lots of screeching sounds too. From the instrument and from me getting frustrated lol 😆 7d

ncsufoxes @Aims42 I played the flute from 5th thru 11th. I‘m sure my family heard many hours of me attempting to play. I‘m happy that she‘s picked something unique. I just hope that she‘ll persevere through the process. My school never had any options like the violin, viola or cello. 7d

Picked this up at the DC book festival since it is Maryland‘s One Book selection. The book is a collection of poetry about the authors deep dive into searching for her family‘s roots to slavery in MD. Her family is connected to one of the largest landowner in MD. Frederick Douglas was enslaved by this family. The poems highlight the authors family, the house, Douglas, Harriet Tubman. The book also holds very artistic renderings of the past.

The similarities to today & what happened 100 years ago are eerily similar. Replace the white hoods with red hats. My hope with this story is that the white hats were defeated. That through the persistence of journalists, lawyers, & others pushing back they were able to defeat the one group trying to destroy our country from within. The only problem is that too many people in this country (SC, lawmakers) are too afraid to stand up. I guess they

ncsufoxes hope that they will be treated well when democracy is gone. The story shows us that we need to keep fighting & standing up for a country that we know, not whatever we‘re being dragged into. Our country is for the people & by the people, not whatever this is. 7d

Lesson #17 is our current state: “Listen for dangerous words: Be alert to the use of the words extremism and terrorism. Be alive to the fatal notions of emergency and exception. Be angry about the treacherous use of patriotic vocabulary.” There were 4 shootings in 24 hours this weekend. When the violence is done by another white male, there is an excuse. But no laws are made for gun control. Instead anyone on the “left” has now been labeled as an

ncsufoxes extremist. Giving a vague generalization as to who is the “enemy” is dangerous & one we should all be concerned about. Characterizing transgender persons as dangerous & violent is another step in labeling other people as the enemy. But meanwhile normalizing the terror that certain agencies are imparting on anyone that is not white is horrific & we should all be angry over this. Anyhow very quick read of part guidance but also makes you say holy 7d

#ranttime As the WH is about to announce the “cause” of Autism like it‘s some f-in game show contestant. Reminder that Causation does not equal Correlation. Just because a pregnant woman might have taken Tylenol (the one safe pain reliever during pregnancy) does not mean that it caused Autism. Then recklessly recommending Leucorovin (a cancer drug) as the treatment is not science. My husband (a geneticist) read the study that they are basing their

ncsufoxes recommendations on. It was done on an extremely small sample size. Additionally the children in the study had a specific genetic marker, which is why the drug possibly helped some. There are over 100 genes associated with Autism. You‘d be hard pressed to find most drs to push for genetic testing, much less getting your insurance company to pay for it. Drs will be bombarded with calls to have this drug given to their child. It just makes the job of 2w
ncsufoxes Drs more complicated. It continues to sow distrust in drs & the science community. Families of Autistic kids need: better supports, better training for drs & therapists (oh the stories I could tell), better access to Medicaid, community supports/programs, better access to education/IEP goals, waiting lists that aren‘t years long to get evaluated, better job supports after high school/college…the list goes on & on. Ugh, this mom is tired 2w
TheBookHippie So so tired. 😵‍💫 2w
See All 22 Comments
AmyG All I can say is this administration needs to make up these theories and paint them as truth. Then they can proceed to make America healthy by protecting people from made up situations. It‘s all insanity. (edited) 2w
IriDas @ncsufoxes Yes, families need support and a radical shift in society so we don‘t have to spend our lives wondering what will happen to our children when we die. This culture is just so awful while simultaneously being so self-righteous (“America is the greatest” blah blah). It is exhausting just to function each day in this place. 2w
lil1inblue I'm so tired. I can't even write a coherent response. But I'm right there with you. This is infuriating. 😡 2w
AllDebooks Well said. ✊️ 2w
ncsufoxes In case anyone is interested, there was a paper written last year by JAMA & published on NIHs website. They analyzed the Swiss study that was done over 25 years studying 2.5 million children. Guess what JAMA & the study both concluded- Tylenol does not cause Autism or ADHD or other neurodevelopmental disorders. 2w
dabbe Just when you think it can't get weirder, or more chaotic, or more dangerous, or more ANYTHING ... this. I stand with you on very wobbly, tired legs, but I'm still standing! 💙✊🏻💙 2w
ncsufoxes We had a discussion about this last night at dinner. We went over Causation, Correlation, Confounding variables, longitudinal studies, sample size with our 10 & 16 year old. Teaching them young. 2w
CBee I saw the news about this but couldn‘t bring myself to read it. Not today, anyway. Thanks for summing it up for me 💚😢 2w
TheBookHippie @ncsufoxes I read that too. Sigh. 2w
ncsufoxes Stepping back up on my soapbox: what continues to be one of the most effective tools to assist families & Autistic children is access to early intervention. I have friends that still work in EI in NC & they have posted recently that due to cuts to Medicaid EI is set to lose up to $800,000. What that means is that the qualifications for eligibility will raise, which means more kids fall through the cracks. I have a kid that was missed. I worked in 2w
ncsufoxes EI for many years. When we moved to CA my middle child was 2. The first thing I did was refer him to EI because he wasn‘t saying many words. In 2011 in CA a child needed to have a 50% delay in order to receive EI services (my kid had 33%, he would have qualified in NC). He was missed & then our pediatrician wouldn‘t listen to me. I knew that there was something & I screamed into the void. I always advocate for EI because it can make a difference 2w
AnnCrystal
🥺😢😘💝.
(edited) 2w
Chrissyreadit yes 100% - the reduction in EI has been purely financial even though research has demonstrated the significance of it. I have so many drs here who will not consider autism as a dx- (instead prefer ODD- but that is another soapbox) We will continue to just share accurate information. My own anger over the ignorance of people in this country and purposeful damage by this administration is exhausting but every time i see posts like yours i reme we 2w
Chrissyreadit are each others community and that is vital in these times! 2w
ncsufoxes @Chrissyreadit yes ODD is a favorite of drs instead of Autism. We were told Intermittent Explosive Disorder, not Autism (because our son due to anxiety & flight/fight would run out of drs offices). Again better consistent training across psych & drs is needed. Delaying access to vital services & supports costs more money in the long run, as well as denies families the help they need. It‘s a story that many families share all over the US, sadly 2w
ncsufoxes All ODD does is basically label the child as the problem (not saying that children are the problem but this is the perception that drs & schools will take away). Drs don‘t think about the further stigmatization that labels like ODD/IED add to the child & family. I had many discussions with my son‘s IEP team about changing his area of eligibility due to stigmas. I pushed for a different category because I didn‘t want the negative to define him. 2w
Chrissyreadit i completely agree!!! 2w

Since moving to MD I‘ve become a little obsessed with learning more about Minty Ross or as we know her, Harriet Tubman. Tubman was born on the eastern shores of MD & a significant portion of the Underground Railroad runs through the area. This book explores Tubman & other Black women that were spiritual leaders in the early 1800s. Tubman had visions which researchers now attribute to seizures she most likely suffered after her head injury.

ncsufoxes Tubman felt that everyone deserved freedom & she was destined to free as many people as she could. Tubman had said, “I know what a dreadful condition slavery is. I have seen hundreds of escaped slaves, but I never saw one who was willing to go back to be a slave.” Tubman used her knowledge of the environment & love of nature to allow her to safely transport many people to freedom. 2w

The book is based on a photograph brought to the Holocaust Museum in DC. There were so many important & sad points made throughout the book. There are so many people & families that were murdered that historians feel that they still don‘t have the full story. That there has been so much whitewashing & pushback on researchers. Making it difficult to access archives or digger further into the past. My grandmothers family left Poland in the early

ncsufoxes 1900s. My grandmother was born in the US but her older sister was born in Poland. My mom doesn‘t even know what village they came from. We think they possibly were somewhere near what is now Ukraine. They were Catholic & we understand that something must have prompted them to leave Poland. My mom said her grandparents never spoke English & they never discussed where they were from. I am always trying to find more answers to this puzzle. 2w
TheBookHippie I hope you find answers. This book was so good. 2w
ncsufoxes @TheBookHippie my mom has decided to take a genealogy class to see what she can learn. Her dad is from Ireland & she had requested a copy of his birth certificate from Ireland (her, my sisters & I are working on our dual citizenship). She knows she has family in Ireland but she wonders if anyone survived in Poland. 2w

The Baltimore Museum of Art announced today that they will be showing Amy Sherald‘s American Sublime exhibit from November 2-April. I‘m happy that I‘ll still have the opportunity to get to see this exhibit. https://artbma.org/exhibition/amy-sherald-american-sublime

#wdncw that it only the 3rd day of September & have already baked the first batch of pumpkin muffins. Plus #wdncw that we bought 2 containers of chocolate cupcakes from Costco. It‘s my middle child‘s birthday, which is why I bought the cupcakes he requested. Medical Terminology For Dummies | Beverley Henderson, Jennifer L. Dorsey

Someone learned a new science word & is flashing it around like he knows what it is. You can‘t see mitochondrial disorders. I don‘t know what he‘s trying to imply. Mitochondrial disorders are not very common (I worked with a handful of kids in early intervention that had these disorders & I worked with the medically complicated kids at Duke). I really wish the news would ask him to define what a mitochondrial challenge looks like. Also how

ncsufoxes creepy is it that he‘s eyeing children. Also how do you define healthy? You can‘t look at a child & determine if they‘re healthy or not. That is between the child, their parents/guardians & doctors…not you. I wouldn‘t say that he looks or sounds healthy, so he shouldn‘t be one to make judgments. #ranttime 1mo
lil1inblue 😡 😡 😡 The daughter of a dear friend has a mitochondrial disorder. It took quite some time to get a diagnosis. And they struggle constantly with it because it's an “invisible“ condition, so people don't believe them. My loathing of this man knows no bounds. 1mo

#wdncw when we say that what happened today & happens too many times across the US is because too many spineless politicians continue to accept money from the NRA & other PACs to stop any real legislation to that would stop children from being massacred. They offer their “thoughts & prayers” but no real solutions. They will continue to accept the blood money & do things like blame it on mental health (meanwhile defunding mental health resources

One of those books that is highly relevant to today & the continued fight for voting rights. The book tells the story of several key people that fought against racism & white supremacy to bring voting rights to Black citizens of SC. Their model was used throughout the south to enshrine voting rights that many were denied for too long. As we see with gerrymandering today, people who are in power are fearful when people can use their vote.

ncsufoxes The courts have recently struck down laws in Alabama, Mississippi, & Louisiana stating that they all have violated the Voting Rights Act (in particular limiting the vote of Black citizens). It is sad that people to this day still have to fight for their right to vote. This quote still rings true to this day, “Their real fear was that if Black people continued to register, they would soon outnumber white voters & would be able to decide elections.” 1mo

We took our kids on one last summer adventure to Harper‘s Ferry National Park. I surprisingly did not buy a book at the bookstore but did buy a new puzzle (which are just as addicting). We have been on a mission to continue to take our kids to museums & historical sites as the current administration threatens to white wash American history. Plus supporting our National Parks. What I Ate in One Year | STANLEY. TUCCI

I love listening to Stanley Tucci talk. I loved his story on getting kids ready. I feel the same way, why am I having to repeat the same thing every day, year after year. He says what all parents are thinking. Of course his discussions about meals made me hungry (why I made minestrone soup, luckily it‘s cool in MD tonight). I‘m not as adventurous as he is in his food selections (no rabbit for me), but it did make me want to try some new recipes.

#wdncw #realhistory I don‘t know who needs to hear this or be reminded but slavery was bad. There should be no debating about this. Talking about it is not “woke.” It was a pure evil system. If you‘re on the side of saying it wasn‘t that bad you‘re either a N—i or White Suprem@cist. You clearly need to re-evaluate your understanding of history. The last few years I‘ve stepped back from reading about WWII because it felt so overdone. But with the rise of authoritarianism currently happening in the US it has pushed back to reading about that era. The 2 on the left I found at Hachette Books (I signed up for the newsletter & got a 20% off coupon). I have not been able to find “What We Knew” anywhere. The other 2 I found wondering around the bookstore.
