Finished in 2025, one of those bpoks that could be so helpful & a lifeline to someone that is having the same questions & concerns but not sure where to turn to. The reason why books are so vital & access to all is necessary. If a book like this can help one person feel less alone that‘s the point. It doesn‘t have to be my experience for me to understand it matters to someone else.

Yoko: A Biography | David Sheff
post image
Pickpick

Finished in 2025, I was interested to learn more about Yoko‘s life. She faced endless racism & misogyny when she became connected to John Lennon. After John‘s death she faced years of death threats towards her & her son. She is always seen as the person that broke up the Beatles but the group was already falling apart before her. She is the one that encouraged John to finish making Abby Road. It was interesting to learn about her life prior to

ncsufoxes being with John, her life with him, & the after. Sheff also does point out the book was not viewed by Ono before publication. He had had an immensely close relationship with her for many years & then they slowly drifted apart. 6h

My favorite book of August was Spell Freedom. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the establishment of early voting rights, particularly in the South. Two shy of my goal of 100, still a decent reading year. I‘m going to go with a goal of 100 books again for 2026 but hope to surpass it. I have some chunksters I want to get through this year. #top25of2025 part 2 in no order. I‘d have a hard time picking my favorite of the year because I learned something new/different with each book. I gravitate more towards NF to learn more about others people‘s stories & histories.

ncsufoxes @Deblovestoread I feel the same way, I feel like I can‘t read one more book about WWII. Then I found The Lilac People & learned about another whole portion of history I knew nothing about. It‘s a bit of a heartbreaker but happy to have stumbled upon it. I hope you enjoy it. 16h
ncsufoxes @AnnCrystal I don‘t know how I came across Council of Dolls but it‘s such a unique & interesting story. I have really enjoyed learning more about parts of history that I was not fully taught in school. They are not necessarily happy stories but so full of depth. I hope you are enjoying it. 16h
AnnCrystal @ncsufoxes it is really important that these stories are finally having a chance to be told by authors from Native Country. I'm finding this a bit difficult, yet the mystical surrealism of the dolls adds a fascinating intrigue to help these serious stories unfold. Do love the interlocking storytelling. 💝📚💝. 11h

On Monday my youngest had to go in for a colonoscopy & endoscopy for GI to determine what‘s been going on with her. She‘s had stomach pain & nausea for over 2 years. She‘s had recently developed some concerning symptoms which prompted the procedures. Thankful all was clear, no damage & no inflammation. The 10 year old rated this one 👍👍. I love Tiffany McDaniel‘s adult books, so I was excited when she wrote a kid‘s book. It‘s about witches, wizards, magical hats & creatures. I loved that Tolden had a little dragon that hung on his ear to whisper what people were saying (creative way to address hearing disability). “I suppose because books make you feel magical. That‘s why some people are frightened of books. That‘s why some people even try to

My son said that URI has had an increased police presence on campus today (he was in the library this morning). The university decided to cancel exams in person. Students could do their finals online or see what their professor had decided. The university felt that they needed to protect student & faculty mental & physical health right now. Unfortunately the do not even have a person in custody (they released their person on interest, which he was

ncsufoxes staying in Coventry, RI which is not very far from URI). I think it‘s sad that this continues to be the state of our country. That kids can‘t finish their exams that they worked hard to study for. That we have lawmakers just say: get over it, move on, it‘s part of life. URI & Brown are very different schools but RI is small & their communities are close. Just tired of kids & families having to deal with these tragedies over & over. 2w
TheBookHippie I‘m just so tired. 2w
mcctrish I saw a video of the police storming into a room in the library at Brown to rescue students who were hiding from the gunman and truthfully that alone is enough to terrify me 2w
See All 15 Comments
AmyG This is the country we live in. Created by a party who does nothing to protect it‘s citizens. $$$$$$$ 2w
Readergrrl It is so terrible. My daughter is at college in MA and they are increasing security there too. It is exhausting to be a parent in the US. I don‘t even think it‘s hyperbole to say that our children mean nothing to lawmakers. My colleagues in Newtown, CT understand this all too well. I am sorry that your son has to have this added stress in an already stressful exam season. 2w
Aims42 I second @TheBookHippie with being tired. This is a broken system and yet all we get is “thoughts & prayers” 2w
dabbe I was just going to say that, @Aims42 ... that if I heard one more politician say “our thoughts and prayers“, I was going to pull all of my hair out and scream into the abyss. I'm sorry for your son and for all the children in this current shit-ass country. May they rise above and be able to rid us of the excrement that is currently in D.C. ♥️💙💚 2w
AnnCrystal Can your son return home to his family and continue classes online?? Terrible that our young have to fear this kind of violence 💝🫂💝. 2w
ncsufoxes @AnnCrystal he technically could but we had already purchased his train ticket for Thursday (we live in MD). Campus is still open & with an increased police presence on campus. I know he has other things he needs to finish up like an exam on line on Wednesday. His exam tomorrow got changed to giving a 10 minute video presentation. 2w
ncsufoxes @TheBookHippie yep, so tired. @mcctrish yes, that video was sad, scary, & horrifying. @AmyG exactly, our representatives work for whoever pays for their re-election campaigns & whatever other financial incentives they get instead of working or protecting their constituents. Money needs to be taken out of politics (looking at you SC that said corporations have the right to basically create all the messes we‘re in) 2w
ncsufoxes @Readergrrl the saddest part as it was the anniversary of Newtown & the realization that if no gun laws were passed after that tragedy there may never be sensible gun laws in the US. 48 hours after the shooting in Australia & they‘re already enacting stronger gun laws. That‘s what should happen. Not to mention all of the added anxiety & trauma this continues to add to young children/adults/teachers. Guns are the #1 reason for child deaths 2w
ncsufoxes @Aims42 I have strong words about where they can put their “thoughts & prayers.” I think Dems running against people that have accepted money from gun lobby groups should post the money they‘ve accepted alongside the number of kids killed. I think we have to move past the point of being civil if one certain party is not doing anything. I saw something recently though talking about how many industries have popped up selling “protection” for kids 2w
TheBookHippie @ncsufoxes the student who was on our school roof with a gun threatening to kill— served 18 months. 2w
AnnCrystal @ncsufoxes
that's understandable 💝🫂💝.
(edited) 2w
Aims42 @ncsufoxes I think we‘re on the same page of where exactly (and how deep) their “thoughts and prayers” should go 😜 Your idea of the gun lobbying transparency with candidates is great!! I feel like everyone in office is like, “welp, it‘s so sad” and that‘s where it ends. But you know what we should definitely do? Cut funding for mental health 😒 Ugh, it sucks here. 2w

ncsufoxes @AmyG I told my husband if kids didn‘t have school tomorrow I‘d so be having a few drinks tonight (& I don‘t really drink). It‘s been an exhausting month 2w
ncsufoxes @dabbe all roads seem to point to IBD but she needs to have the procedures done to confirm her diagnosis & what type, if that‘s what it is. I did her check in today & now the head of the GI peds department is doing the procedure. I don‘t know if that makes me more nervous. I‘m sure it‘s just her & the other scheduled Dr switched their procedure days or something. But it also makes me a little anxious that wondering if her labs & her work up 2w

#wdncw when we say we don‘t overly love the Yuletide season. I like certain things about the holidays: lights, my holiday records, holiday movies. But I‘m so over all the work the holidays involve. I really haven‘t even figured out what I‘m getting anyone for Christmas. There has been so much going on with one kid getting a colonoscopy right before Christmas, one coming home from college in 2 weeks (plus applying to grad school & being a joyous

ncsufoxes young adult that doesn‘t think we know anything 🙄), to having an Autistic kid that generally finds the holidays hard because of so much happening (he also hates having his gifts wrapped & finds it all exhausting), to having a puppy getting into everything. Plus planning to go to NC to see family for a few days. Which means seeing my MIL. 1mo
Ruthiella I do far, far less than you but I really do not like the run up to Christmas either. I find it stressful. Courage, my friend! (edited) 1mo

Amiable There‘s an old “Family Guy” episode where Lois freaks out and ends up climbing to the top of the tree on the town green to get away from holiday obligations and they have to shoot her in the butt with a tranquilizer gun to get her down. 😀 1mo
AmyG Sending a hug. I loathe December and I don‘t even celebrate Christmas. It will be stressful, but you got this. You‘re a woman. We do what we have to do. ☹️ (edited) 1mo
lil1inblue It's really unfair that we have to deal with MILs on top of the holiday craziness. I hope you're able to find moments of peace in the madness. ❤️ 1mo

@Deblovestoread I‘m excited about your recommendations for #AuldLangSpine. I have only read one on your list- King, which was excellent. The Correspondent & Things in Nature Merely Grow were on my radar but haven‘t gotten to them this year. Now time to track down some books.

I am very critical of stories that include autistic characters…but so far this author has captured what it‘s like to be a caregiver of an Autistic child. “Poesy couldn‘t fathom an obstacle like personal safety...there is a thing I want so I will go get that thing.” “Posey is not trying to be difficult or defiant, nobody else seems to see it that way.” Others saying- she has peculiar habits, you coddle her, that child has no idea how to behave

ncsufoxes In my day we knew how to deal with things like that 1mo

In some good science news…one of my husband‘s close friend from grad school just had a huge publication in Nature Neuroscience recently. He‘s a researcher at the University of Kentucky focusing on Alzheimer‘s. It‘s pretty exciting to see. My husband said it‘s still years away from being used in humans but it‘s a huge development. After all the hurt that has been done in science this last year it makes me happy to see a friend have great success

ncsufoxes In case anyone wants to do some light reading. My husband gets a pass for reading at home since he reads science journals most days at work (I can‘t understand the title let alone the content). 1mo

#wdncw or any day of the week when we say F this man. The hurt that he is doing to so many is unconscionable. Not to mention the harm that he is doing to Autistic individuals & their families. For the millionth time vaccines do not cause Autism. He is continuing to sow distrust between the public & the scientific/medical community. I will never forgive all the people that voted to confirm this man & let him do what he‘s doing. As a 3rd baby died

ncsufoxes of whooping cough in Kentucky this year (none of the babies or moms were vaccinated). Autism is not a tragedy, my child is not a burden…F this man again for good measure. #ranttime 1mo

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick They say Make America Healthy Again, but then do a ton of shit behind the scenes to make America less healthy. It's a clown show from top to bottom. Earlier this year, Josh Johnson on The Daily Show said RFK Jr is "like a leather bag filled with coughs" and I laughed so hard that my guy had to pause the TV for about 10 minutes to let me finish. What I'm trying to say is that they're good for something. Jokes. ? 1mo

A Council of Dolls: A Novel | Mona Susan Power
post image
Pickpick

A heartbreaking & emotional. There are 4 different stories from different time points in history. Each girl has a doll that helps them through traumatic times in their lives. “There is no true healing without remembering.” “Agony is a dreadful companion but at least it keeps her sharp, keeps her from surrendering to oblivion, where there‘s no memory of the time before pain.”

AnnCrystal 💝📚💝 have this on my bookshelf, yet been kinda afraid to read. 1mo

This is a book that every American should read. It‘s so heartbreaking & infuriating. When one reflects on what was done to the Indigenous people at the start of this country (Ken Burns‘ American Revolution does an amazing job at highlighting so much of early American & Native Americans). It‘s just frustrating to learn how American law & politics still hurt Native communities. How businesses still influence the law & their greed supersedes

ncsufoxes people‘s rights. How the Supreme Court listens to lies & doesn‘t investigate the truth from the Native people themselves to make decisions is gross (although Gorsuch being a fierce defender was surprising). “Most often when people think of what Native Americans lost, they think of land, but that‘s just what white people gained.” What Native people lost is so much more.” 1mo
mcctrish Ken Burns is a treasure 1mo

I loved Somebody Somewhere (one of my favorite shows, still sad it was cancelled). I loved this book narrated by Hiller. It was funny & laughed plenty of times out loud. It was also sad & emotional as he talked about his parents. He discussed the relentless bullying he faced growing up. He also talked about how supportive & caring his parents were. Overall just a fun but introspective memoir. A must if you‘re a fan of Hiller.

Karisa Love him and loved this too! So wonderful to see him getting more of the recognition he deserves lately 😍 1mo

Between the current chaos of the attempted decimation of democracy & life, it‘s been a rough week. My 10 year old was diagnosed with IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease) this week. I‘m happy we have answers but on the other hand it‘s a whole new world of learning about this incurable disease & autoimmune disorder. I know we‘re with a good provider & she‘ll have great care. It‘s just a lot to mentally take in. Life likes to keep me on my toes, I‘ve

ncsufoxes spent many hours learning & reading about Autism, mental health, behavioral, ADHD. Why not add in autoimmune disorders while we‘re at it. Because my inclination is always to read & research as much as I can. 1mo
Tamra I‘m sorry for the disorder, but glad for the diagnosis so treatment can begin! Nothing worse than grappling around in the dark for a fix. 1mo

(also sending positive vibes for everything else ☀)
1mo
Bookwormjillk That sounds like a lot. Hang in there. 1mo
AnnCrystal That is tedious, although I am glad that you finally have answers. While not the same, I grew up with stomach issues, which sustained or worsened over time. digestive tract sensitivity (is what I believe my pediatrician called it).

Much of it was relieved when my family switched to organic foods we're about a 80% to 90% organic household due to availability) or non-GMO. We had to switch slowly due to the chemical withdrawal dangers. 👇🏼
(edited) 1mo
AnnCrystal My brother died of weed-killer caused non-hodgkin's lymphoma...so when we discovered the truth about food...it was also about activism.

It's been many years now, and my stomach issues are not all-together cured, but incredibly better, so are my headaches, and my family members have experienced improvement in sleep, allergies, joint pain, swelling, weight management, etc.

Research about organics and ask your doctor about it.

😘💕💝.
(edited) 1mo
ncsufoxes @AnnCrystal we‘ve been eating organic food for years. I made sure our kids were eating organic after my oldest was diagnosed with ADHD (14 years ago). My daughter has only ever drunk organic milk. We also don‘t really eat processed foods (my kids do have chips from time to time), I make most stuff from scratch (waffles, spaghetti sauce, etc). We don‘t eat fast food. They don‘t really eat junk food: candy, soda. It‘s something I‘ve been 1mo
ncsufoxes conscious about for years. 1mo
AnnCrystal @ncsufoxes that is grand. It's difficult in today's market...yet so necessary 💝💝💝. 1mo

dabbe Wow. Your plate is beyond full. One of my retired colleagues has dealt with IBD since she was in college. Once she figured out her regimen and what works for her, she has told me that it hardly ever impacts her. Finding the regimen is key, and I know no one is better than you on research! 😍 You are an incredible mom. Your kids are blessed to have you. I hope things calm down soon and am sending all the ♥️🧡♥️ I can. 1mo
ncsufoxes Thank you all for the kind words. Hopefully we‘ll have a better plan after her colonoscopy & endoscopy in a few weeks. She‘s been experiencing pain & nausea for 2 years, which have been hard. But now we know what she is dealing with & we can work on how to reduce flares. It‘s going to take some trial & error but at least we have a path forward. It helps too when my husband is an expert in colon health. So he is aware of current trends & can 1mo

#wdncw when we say we‘re here for the power of Miss Piggy. Can we all agree that insecure men should be relics of the past? And can women stop defending them too? Happy to see journalists like Mary Bruce & Jennifer Jacobs standing up to insecure men & asking them tough questions (hopefully the rest of the journalism pools will also grow a backbone). Bring on the matriarchy & down with the patriarchy.
