YA, dystopian, sapphic, cli-fi(?). It was just ok, the ending was blah, but there's obviously going to be a sequel. YA doesn't hit for me like it used to. Which I suppose makes sense, since I'm not the target demographic.

I loved The Martian, and this did not disappoint. Same humour and lots of science. I hope they do a good job on the movie. 🎧📖

rebcamuse I liked it more than The Martian (but I liked both). I'm not sure I can watch the movie because I loved the book (audiobook) SO MUCH. I don't want someone else's picture of Rocky! :-) But I'll probably give in and watch it anyway. Ryan Gosling is NOT how I pictured the protagonist, haha. 4w

Extreme horror. Bored housewife Delilah teams up with her new neighbor Peggy, who had terminal cancer and is on a mission to hunt and torture as many pedos and rapists possible with the little time she has left. The concept is great, but the writing was absolutely terrible. I'm glad it was just a novella.

SciFi/Creature Horror. I didn't know anything going into this, other than it was suggested for a summer horror read. A low pick. War of the Worlds, meets Predator, meets Castaway. Very suspenseful.

ShelleyBooksie Is this one gory? 2mo

🎧📖 True Crime and cults are right up my alley so this should have been an easy pick. Unfortunately it was an absolute slog. I guess it was the writing style, think it could have used some editing. It was just really hard to get through as it didn't hold my attention at all. Disappointing.

TheBookHippie @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego it‘s really eerie. 😵‍💫 2mo
Sace Oh I hate to hear this. I‘ve been intending to read this forever but I just haven‘t gotten to it. 2mo

Pick. Fast pacing and short chapters made this a quick read. I also enjoyed the writing style, alternating POVs that flowed well. The plot was a bit outlandish unrealistic, so that took away from how horrific the story was. I'm more freaked out by hyper realistic scenarios. And the twist was meh. But I still enjoyed it.

This may be a short novella, but it sure is horrifying. Miller is about to marry her girlfriend, but before that happens she wants to try and reconcile with her estranged mother by spending a weekend away together. Unfortunately her mother has other plans. This book stressed me out from start to finish.

I don't know how I feel about this one. The entire time I never really understood what was going on, like I missed something. I think maybe it was Ward's writing style. I guess overall it's about family and mothers and daughters. It was weird and unsettling. TW for abuse, both people and animals.

I love me an "unconventional" family memoir audio book. Ruth tells the story of growing up in a polygamous mormon community in Mexico. Fascinating, infuriating, and tragic. Recommended for fans of The Glass Castle, North of Normal, and the like.

🎧📖 I don't really get the hype, I almost DNF'd. MC whines the entire time about the situation that she put herself in. I guess there are a number of hot topics that would be good for a book club/discussion, but I just couldn't get past the unlikable MC.

Post apocalyptic. A remote northern indigenous community slowly comes to the realization that the world they know has changed forever. A slow burn, but never felt like it was dragging. I definitely guessed what was going to happen in the end, but it was an enjoyable read, and felt very realistic.

Extreme horror. Lori is an obsessed pen pal of a serial killer, who sends her on a quest to find a key and deliver it to the River Man. Along the way more and more of her past is revealed and it is shocking. Creepy, atmospheric, gory. There is a supernatural element that normally would put me off, but it works in this case.

This was a Litsy/cover buy. A different take on the haunted house trope, as it's about grief. I don't really like to explore that subject too much so it was just ok for me, as I wasn't going to go look too deep into it.

Modern explorers do exist, especially in Canada's vast and unforgiving wilderness. We follow Shoalts as he seeks out an uncharted waterway. I've seen reviews complaining that the author comes off as vain and egotistical, but I didn't really get that from the audio. I think every explorer in history has to be vain to some degree, to even attempt their exploits. I do wish I had read a physical copy tho, as I assume it would include photos & maps.

ShelleyBooksie I really enjoyed this one as well! 8mo
Schwifty I thought this guy sounded familiar. I have his book A History of Canada in Ten Maps which I picked up in Winnipeg a few years back. It was pretty decent. 8mo

⚠️ EXTREME HORROR⚠️ This book was effed up! Vile, disturbing, violent, traumatizing, and I can't think of a TW this didn't have. 5 STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐! I was nervous to start this one as it is notorious, but it was excellent. Lisa is kidnapped and forced to star in a sn*ff film, and she will do whatever it takes to save herself and her unborn child... So yeah. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't just about shock value. There is actually a plot ⬇️

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego And you get breaks between acts of depravity. Actually the first half had most the horrific stuff and the second half read like a thriller and had plot twists. Not many people I would actually recommend this to though. 8mo

Nope. 1/4 of the way in and I just can't. Incels plotting to date rape women, because they can't get laid on their own and women owe them. Not sure if this is a throw away scene or part of the overall plot. But it's not what I'm looking for in my thriller/ general fiction reads.
