Swedish Lapland, 1717. Maj, her husband Jan-Erik and her daughters Frederika and Marit arrive from their native Finland, hoping to forget the traumas of their past and put down new roots in this harsh but beautiful land. Above them looms Black?sen, a mountain whose foreboding presence looms over the valley and whose dark history seems to haunt the lives of those who live in its shadow. While herding the familys goats on the mountain, Frederika happens upon the mutilated body of one of their neighbors, Eriksson. The death is dismissed as a wolf attack, but Maj feels certain that the wounds could only have been inflicted by another man. Compelled to investigate despite her neighbors strange disinterest in the death and the fate of Erikssons widow, Maj is drawn into the dark history of tragedies and betrayals that have taken place on Black?sen. Young Frederika finds herself pulled towards the mountain as well, feeling something none of the adults around her seem to notice. As the seasons change, and the wolf winter, the harshest winter in memory, descends upon the settlers, Jan-Erik travels to find work, and Maj finds herself struggling for her familys survival in this land of winter-long darkness. As the snow gathers, the settlers secrets are increasingly laid bare. Scarce resources and the never-ending darkness force them to come together, but Maj, not knowing who to trust and who may betray her, is determined to find the answers for herself. Soon, Maj discovers the true cost of survival under the mountain, and what it will take to make it to spring.

This was excellent, I can't believe it was her debut novel. Folkloric and atmospheric. Historical fiction set in Swedish Lapland in 1717. Everyone in this remote community is hiding something. The perfect winter read. 🐺❄️

This was my #FoodAndLit pick for #Sweden

It was very atmospheric, and the characters and story were interesting. The mystery was pretty good as well.

A family move to Blackensen mountain from Finland. When someone is found dead in the marshes, the mother sets out to find who did it. But the other settlers blame the wolves, and then become afraid that it is something more sinister.

Bookworm54 This was also a #WinterGames book and got me a lot of wordsearch points for #RestingGrinchFace! 413 words, most of which were unsurprisingly winter and snow 😂 @Julsmarshall 4mo

What a great read for chilly weather! This may be the strongest debut novel I‘ve laid my hands on. Blackåsen is a small, remote village hiding some big, filthy skeletons that you‘re most definitely going to want to dig up. My whole review is up on GoodReads if you‘re interested! :)

I don‘t know why I like reading books set in winter during the winter but I do. And I really enjoyed this book. It wasn‘t an easy read, at least for me. I really liked Maija, a mother, a survivor and an overall take charge and do what needs to be done woman. And I get why the ending ended the way it did but that didn‘t stop me from wanting a neater now. 😀 But overall very intriguing read. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ s

I liked this a lot!
Within days of settling on Blackasen Mountain, Maija's daughters find a dead man. Wolves, say the other settlers. Maija thinks otherwise: but why is she so driven to endanger not only the fragile community but also her own and her daughters' lives in pursuit of the truth?
It's a dark and twisty snowbound tale with intriguing characters, all of whom keep a close watch on the secrets that bind them together and drive them apart.

cathysaid Intriguing! Gotta stack it 📚 6y

This month's #bookclubbakes are caramelitas: layers of oatmeal cookie, chocolate, and caramel sauce. I used to make these so often, I had the recipe memorized.

Our book was fabulous! Part murder mystery, part survival story, it's full of claustrophobia and fear in the dark winter of 1717, where a murderer is among the settlers in remote northern Sweden.

In Maryland in January 2016, I spent the snowstorm reading and watching movies while my cat watched leaves blowing around outside. In Swedish Lapland in October (!) 1717, they spent the snowstorm taking turns shoveling off the porch, worrying about food, and treating a little girl for frostbite. The book is very atmospheric and a little creepy. I'm glad I read it in summer! Liked it, didn't love it. Letter E accomplished. #litsyatoz #catsoflitsy

Mehso-so

I was really hoping to love this book. It sounded perfect for me. The chapters were short, which made the pacing good. The characters were intriguing, but there was just something that didn't totally connect. I felt like too much was held back about the characters for the sake of the mystery. I felt it hindered my ability to fully invest. It was just OK for me, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from picking it up.

So cold here in South Texas (32F)! So I'm #dreamingofawarmerclimate unlike this book. "Wolf winter...I wanted to ask about it. You know, what it is." He was silent for a long time. "It's the kind of winter that will remind us we are mortal," he said. "Mortal and alone." #readjanuary
