Middlemarch
Middlemarch | George Elliot
George Eliot's novel, Middlemarch, explores a fictional nineteenth-century Midlands town in the midst of modern changes during the Industrial Revolution. Instead of choosing to wed a wealthy landowner and settle for a comfortable life, Dorothea Brooke decides to marry Edward Casaubon-a dull scholar who is her senior by a few decades. Dorothea hopes the union will afford her with the opportunity to share in her husband's intellectual pursuits, but even her best efforts can't save the disastrous marriage. Meanwhile, idealistic doctor Tertius Lydgate has progressive ideas about the medical field, and he believes the village of Middlemarch is the place that will embrace his beliefs. But when he weds Rosamond Vincy, the mayor's beautiful daughter, his ideals come into stark contrast with his new bride's materialism and vanity, dooming their marriage from the start. Lastly, Rosamond's brother, Fred, is reluctantly destined for the Church. But his childhood sweetheart Mary Garth refuses to accept him until he settles into a more suitable career and one that interests him. But when circumstances lead to Fred losing a sizeable fortune that sets off a calamitous turn of events, he must reevaluate the choices he has made.

Long ago I started & then set aside this book, daunted by the length. What reading pleasure I postponed! Eliot has such rich characterizations, such thoughtful asides that I‘ve been re-examining my conscience & sympathies as I read. I loved this book. It stirred me to have many thoughtful conversations about it. Now I know why Eliot is considered on of the all-time greats in English literature. This book is well worth your time. It‘s marvelous.

TiredLibrarian I loved this. Beautifully written, and so many of life's experiences in it. 2mo

Today‘s author spotlight: George Eliot! George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, circumventing the stereotype of women writing only light romances. Born in England in 1819, she died at 61 in London. She is considered one of Victorian Literature‘s titans. She wrote 7 novels, known for their realism; some consider Middlemarch the English language‘s greatest novel! She‘s buried at London‘s Highgate Cemetery. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

LibrarianRyan I like Silas Marner much more than Middle March 3mo
Leftcoastzen Yay ,George! 3mo
Moonprismpower @LibrarianRyan I read Silas Marner and has high hopes but found I didn‘t care for it. I read it as an adult having as a child watched a Steve Martin movie based on the story. What part did you like best? 3mo
LibrarianRyan @Moonprismpower I had not seen the movie before I read the book but it is cute. I really loved this curmudgeon of a old man taking in a baby and raising it. He hates everything but this little melts his heat and he gets to feel love and the loss of love. 3mo

Book #71: I rather enjoyed Middlemarch. It started off slow, but as the book went on it picked up its pace rather well. Although the book was the longest I have yet read on this list, about 900 pages, the plot was simple enough that it was easy to follow throughout the entire book. Middlemarch is a town in England where the book follows the lives...

I did it! I got through the entire book! I think this was my third try and I resorted to listening to the audiobook on 1.25 speed... Yeah, it was a lot of drama and pearl clutching, so if you like that sort of weepy distress then this is the book for you! 😁 Now if I could just get through Swann's Way!

#QuotsyApr19 Day 30: #mistake in prophecies as gratuitous. I have yet to read a George Eliot novel. I think I own a copy of this book lying somewhere, gathering dust. 🤓🤣😭😂🧚🏼‍♀️💕📚

Leniverse Middlemarch is an amazing novel. But it is quite an investment of time and attention. The prose is really dense. I read it one or two chapters per day, with my morning coffee, over two months. When it was finished I was sad and wanted more. 10mo
gradcat @Leniverse I think you put it very well . . . in fact, all of her books are dense and require a great commitment. You know, I‘m just thinking . . . if you want more have you read (edited) 10mo
Leniverse @gradcat I have, yes. And Silas Marner. After Middlemarch I resolved to read one of her books per year until I‘ve read them all and then read Middlemarch again! Although I might do two this year, since it‘s the 200 anniversary of her birth. I have her Essay collection, and I‘m thinking maybe Adam Bede. 10mo

We are finally back from holiday and regular posting habits can recommence. (I know it‘s a mobile app, but I just don‘t get around to it. I need my space. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

So, Christmas #BookHaul part 1/3. These are mine. Very happy to get beautiful cloth bound editions of two of my favourite books. 😍 Also happy to receive two award winning books by Norwegian authors. I haven‘t been able to keep up with Norwegian lit at all since I moved to the UK.

13mo
