From critically acclaimed author Cindy Pon comes an edge-of-your-seat sci-fi thriller, set in a near-future Taipei plagued by pollution, about a group of teens who risk everything to save their city. Jason Zhou survives in a divided society where the elite use their wealth to buy longer lives. The rich wear special suits, protecting them from the pollution and viruses that plague the city, while those without suffer illness and early deaths. Frustrated by his citys corruption and still grieving the loss of his mother who died as a result of it, Zhou is determined to change things, no matter the cost. With the help of his friends, Zhou infiltrates the lives of the wealthy in hopes of destroying the international Jin Corporation from within. Jin Corp not only manufactures the special suits the rich rely on, but they may also be manufacturing the pollution that makes them necessary. Yet the deeper Zhou delves into this new world of excess and wealth, the more muddled his plans become. And against his better judgment, Zhou finds himself falling for Daiyu, the daughter of Jin Corps CEO. Can Zhou save his city without compromising who he is, or destroying his own heart?

4 ⭐For a book written in 2017, about a futuristic Taipei society, it feels eerily like today. This book starts with the heist of a high society girl. She is kidnapped for money. However, the money isn‘t for nefarious reasons, but so that a group of young people can infiltrate high society in order to make society better for all. You see futuristic Taipei is polluted so bad that the Mei (poor people) have a life expectancy of just 40 years,

LibrarianRyan and most don‘t even make it that far. They die from the brown smog they breath every day, that is not helped much by a mask, by the polluted water they drink, and the lack of food. Its so polluted that no part of society remembers the blue skies. But our gang of young people know that the reason the government won‘t do anything about the pollution is because the big corporations are paying the legislature to look the other way and someone, main 2y
LibrarianRyan mainly them, have to stop it. Not only that. People are sick. Sick of things we think of as easily curable like pneumonia, but also of a new strain of avian flu. This flu has a mortality rate of 80%. But only the poor suffer because the Yo (rich people) have these special suits that not only protect them but do some other neat things as well. I really enjoyed this book. I was not expecting it at all. Based on the cover I was expecting a 2y
LibrarianRyan space book, but I am very happy with what I read. This book does have a sequel, Ruse, but book ends on a nice point that does not require a book two, but you will probably want to read it anyway. 2y

2/5⭐ I applaud the author tackling the disastrous environmental situation we're in, & the book mostly flowed coherently. I enjoyed Pon's signature yummy food descriptions. However, EVERYTHING was telling instead of showing. The narrative stopped to go into detail about dynamics we've already learned about. Daiyu's motivation & trust regarding Zhou are built on the flimsiest of reasons & go into questionable Stockholm Syndrome territory.

Full disclosure, I‘m American born Taiwanese so I may be a bit biased. But, omg, I loved this so much! Everything about Taipei was correct; the non-English words all made sense; it wasn‘t too long; the protagonist was skeptical, but not overly so to the point I‘d want to throttle him; the friend circle made sense; and the heroine, everything about her! So highly recommend this book!

There's a lot of YA books that have been/are being adapted in the last few years. Here's one that's a perfect candidate for an on-screen adaptation. Set in a futuristic Taiwan, this book examines socio-economic disparity, pollution, and global warming. The character development is fantastic, it's well-paced with a thrilling plot and I have a mighty need for the rest of this series.

An intriguing YA dystopia that features environmental collapse to the degree that most air is unbreathable and the rich go around in personalized suits and helmets. It...seemed more realistic than I would have liked. Also I have enjoyed reading about rich teens since Gossip Girl, and the Taiwan twist here was a new spark in that genre.

Overall disappointing.

👍 Great concept, great setting, managed to occasionally keep me interested enough to keep reading.

👎 Poor And shallow characters who accomplish everything too easy, clunky writing, weird pacing, small annoying plot holes. I just wasn‘t invested in this book overall.

YA dystopian story about greed, climate change and rising up to create your own future. Quick read with engaging characters set in future Taipei so polluted that the “mei” people (Withouts) only live to be 40 while the ultra rich You people (haves) consume everything transforming themselves and their environment at will. Interesting premise and compelling YA read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Overall, an enjoyable read set in an unusual (for YA) setting of Taipei, Taiwan with very diverse characters. Recognizable landmarks and food descriptions made it that much more fun. My issue is more with the plan that the characters had to solve the environmental problems, it was more half baked then fully realized. I also would have liked more background on all the characters. There were definite loose threads that may be resolved in book 2.

I liked the underlying message of environment and greed. This was a fast entertaining read. It reminded me of Red Rising, one of my favorite trilogies, but less character development and shorter story.

Only a couple chapter in so far but Cindy Pon's Want is pulling me in hard. I love getting thrown into this sci-fy futuristic version of Taipei where the intense pollution dictates who lives. The wealthy can afford special bubble suits and expensive habitats with clean air flow...while the poor are less lucky. This is the ultimate story of haves versus have nots and I can't wait to see where it goes! #scify #ya #booksandtea

Finished Cindy Pon's latest novel WANT, and I loved it. The book is a fast-paced, sci-fi, conspiracy thriller set in Taiwan with a major "Blade Runner" vibe and a dash of romance. I'll definitely be eagerly awaiting the sequel, even though this first book very much stands on its own.

‪WANT starts with a simple definition of the meis and the yous. I'm now halfway through the book (just finished chapter 7), and Cindy Pon has patiently complicated things so well. Zhou's preconceptions of his world are starting to change and it's going to be interesting to see if it derails his team's plans to take down Jin Corp. #Want #CindyPon

Love the dedication to Cindy Pon's Want. Not only is the bit of "bad boy" wisdom funny, but I love that it's dedicated to Malinda Lo, one of my favorite YA authors. Started the book a few days ago. Really liking the story's structure and fast pacing. Zhou is a great hero for this story, and the cast is intriguing. The suspense is already incredibly tense, and I'm loving that. #CindyPon #Want #YA #youngadult #yascifi #scifi #dedication

I was feeling iffy about this book, since I hadn't liked the author's other book that I'd tried, but boy am I glad I gave this a chance!! While the plot is fairly predictable, it was still fast-paced & full of intrigue. The romance was surprisingly sweet & heart-melting. Definitely put this on your list if you're looking for a super fun futuristic thriller! ★★★★☆.
