Penguin English Library the Old Curiosity Shop
Penguin English Library the Old Curiosity Shop | Charles Dickens
The Penguin English Library Edition of The Old Curiosity Shop by Charles Dickens 'But what added most to the grotesque expression of his face, was a ghastly smile, which, appearing to be the mere result of habit and to have no connexion with any mirthful or complacent feeling, constantly revealed the few discoloured fangs that were yet scattered in his mouth, and gave him the aspect of a panting dog' The tale of Little Nell gripped the nation when it first appeared in 1841. Described as a 'tragedy of sorrows', the story tells of Nell uprooted from a secure and innocent childhood and cast into a world where evil takes many shapes, the most fascinating of which is the stunted, lecherous Quilp. Blending realism with non-realistic genres such as fairy-tale, allegory, and pastoral, the tale of Nell's tragedy contains some of Dickens most memorable comic and grotesque creations, including the dwarf Daniel Quilp, Dick Swiveller and Kit Nubbles. The Penguin English Library - 100 editions of the best fiction in English, from the eighteenth century and the first novels to the beginning of the First World War.

Pickpick

This is a difficult book to love, but I do. Quilp is among the very worst of villains in Dickens‘ novels, which says a lot because there are so many wicked people in his novels. One of the main characters, Little Nell, almost 14, must lead her grandfather with dementia out of London and into the wide world. She learns in the harshest of ways his horrible dark secret, which persists along with his dementia. The most heartbreaking scene I‘ve read ⬇️

Texreader in any Dickens‘ novel is her discovery and how she learns it. The reader cannot but love and adore Nell, but her story is tragic. I love the book for Kip, Nell‘s little friend who had the biggest heart of any boy in any Dickens‘ book I‘ve read yet. Quilp puts Kip into the worst possible position in a manner that was impossible for Kip to defend himself, putting Kip‘s and the lives of his mother and baby brother at unimaginable risk. While full ⬇️ 1d
Texreader of dastardly characters, the book is also full of kind, sometimes foolish, generous, and warm-hearted people. Was this the Harry Potter of its day? Some say so, and my set of 1940s Old Curiosity Shop dishes also support it—fans could collect the dishes in the 1940s, just as Potterverse fans can now. Quilp is Voldemort with his cohort young Tom Scott, with a charming cast of young teenagers against the world. A truly bittersweet story for the ages. 1d

Ruthiella Did you change your mind about Duck Swiveler? He turned out to be a favorite character for me. I also felt for Miss Brass. I know she‘s a villain but I felt that she was the better lawyer if only she‘d been allowed to study. 1d
Cuilin Fabulous review. I agree with everything. Kit is definitely one of the kindest characters 💗 22h
Texreader @Ruthiella He‘s quite an unusual character. Separated from Fred, Swiveler loses the dark aura somewhat. He still seems to be associated with Quilp for awhile, making him quite the enigma. But sure enough, he does what needs to be done. I think he‘s one of Dickens‘ more intriguing characters. So glad to see why he‘s a favorite. I so wanted Miss Brass to turn good. 20h
Texreader @Cuilin Thanks! I was thinking I could squeeze in Chuzzlewit when I finished but that is a 40+ hour audiobook! Yikes!! 20h
Texreader @Cuilin If we continue into 2026, I recommend some makeup months. 😉 20h
Cuilin @Texreader I was seriously considering reducing the reading list. I rushed through the reading this year which isn‘t ideal. Maybe just two chunksters next year? (edited) 19h

The definition sort of begs the question doesn‘t it?

“Then, Mr Brass left off writing entirely, and, with his pen in his hand, hummed his very loudest; shaking his head meanwhile from side to side, like a man whose whole soul was in the music, and smiling in a manner quite seraphic.”

Book coincidences are crazy! I read this word for the first time this week in Joan Didion‘s Democracy (above). Now, it‘s in Dickens!! What the heck!

“Quilp said not a word in reply, but walking so close to Kit as to bring his eyes within two or three inches of his face, looked fixedly at him, retreated a little distance without averting his gaze, approached again, again withdrew, and so on for half-a-dozen times, like a head in a phantasmagoria.”

“[Quilp] clung tight to his opponent, and bit and hammered away with such good-will and heartiness, that it was at least a couple of minutes before he was dislodged. Quill‘s attorney Sampson Brass has a primate appearance here!

“Mr Brass, after writhing about, in a great many strange attitudes, and often twisting his face and eyes into an expression like that which is usually produced by eating gooseberries very early in the season, was by this time awake also. Seeing that Mr Quilp invested himself in his every-day garments, he hastened to do the like,…

I‘ve reached the “holidays” in the book. I‘m not sure if that means winter holidays but it‘s a good excuse to post another image from another dish from my grandmother‘s Old Curiosity Shop dishes.

Reading how popular this serialization of this book back in the day, I now understand why these dishes were made. Even the book description calls it the Harry Potter of its day.

This book has taken a very very dark turn. Oh my heart hurts for Little Nell!!! I wouldn‘t have thought Dickens could go to such heartbreaking places. And I‘ve read enough Dickens to see an immense range of emotions. But dang, this is brutal. (I removed spoilers and replaced with ellipses.)

We definitely needed a bit of humor from Mrs Jarley deciding not to become an atheist.

Meet Daniel Quilp (far left):

“The creature appeared quite horrible with his monstrous head and little body, as he rubbed his hands slowly round, and round, and round again—with something fantastic even in his manner of performing this slight action—and, dropping his shaggy brows and cocking his chin in the air, glanced upward with a stealthy look of exultation that an imp might have copied and appropriated to himself.”

In what universe is it ok to reveal the ending of the book in the introduction to the book? In the first paragraph of the introduction to the book? 🤬

I‘m on chapter 11 and decided to go back and read the introduction. I‘m mad as heck.

#whattheDickens @Cuilin

Ruthiella Claire Tomlinson‘s biography of Dickens spoiled the ending of this book for me. I guess it is pretty famous, what with the Oscar Wilde quote and all-but it annoys me too. 3w
Cuilin I never read introductions. I‘ve been burned by spoilers too often. However I‘m aware of the ending of this one. 3w
Bookwormjillk It‘s happened to me too, and I think it should be illegal. 3w
See All 6 Comments
AnneCecilie I‘ve stopped reading the introductions until I have finished the book. I once read an introduction with 50ish pages left in the book, and it still managed to spoil the ending. Then I don‘t think it‘s an introduction anymore, so not OK. 3w
CSeydel For some reason, the people who write scholarly introductions to classics always assume you‘ve already read the book. Do they not understand that there‘s a first time for everyone? I wish there was a term for an “introduction” that, say, helps put the book in context historically or literarily while still respecting the experience of the first reading. 3w
lil1inblue If I read the introduction, I read it at the end. I've been burned by spoilers one too many times. Like @cseydal said, they always seem to assume you've read the book. 3w

Dickens always names his characters appropriately. We meet Mr. Swiveller, compatriot of the grandfather‘s grandson Kip, both of whom seem to be up to no good.

I‘m looking forward to Chapter 3, where we will meet a fellow named Daniel Quilp. That‘s an ambiguous last name, so it will be interesting to see what sort of character he is.

Oh I do love Dickens.

#whattheDickens @Cuilin

Ruthiella This is not one of my favorite Dickens, but Dick Swiveler is one of my characters. 👍 3w
Texreader @Ruthiella Oh good to know! When he creates despicable characters I always cringe when there‘s a chapter with them in it. 3w

I pulled this off my shelf tonight to plan my #whattheDickens reading & discovered a bookmark from Hay on Wye—where I purchased this copy.😍 It was helpfully tucked in between Curiosity Shop and Child‘s History, so I only had to flip back a few pages to determine how many chapters are in Curiosity Shop. The characters in this story are caricatures. There‘s the evil like Quilp and the good like Nell and Kit. Quilp is punished by drowning, like Quilp. And the good are punished by sickness, like Nell. What a horrible ending. Dickens has the longest sentences and writes about 400 pages more than necessary. It‘s baffling to me that Dickens can write something beautiful like A Tale of Two Cities or David Copperfield, and then write something like this…

Hello everyone! This is my first time here. I'm reading Dickens with the book club. I'm really relaxing with his stories. It's always between fabulousness and hard reality. Now my reading experience is much richer and I see Dickens's traces in works of Dostoevsky. BTW, he's my icon equal with Hugo.

“There‘s plenty more of it at the same shop,” said Mr. [Dick] Swiveller, by turns advancing and retreating in a threatening attitude, “a large and extensive assortment always on hand— country orders executed with promptitude and dispatch—will you have a little more, sir? Don‘t say no, if you‘d rather not.”

LauraJ I may name my next batch of foster kittens after Dickens characters! 7y
jveezer @LauraJ That would be classic. A whole litter of Swivelers, Fagins, Chuzzlewits, Pecksniffs, Fanny Squeers, M‘Choakumchilds, and Fezziwigs‼️😆 7y
LauraJ I challenge anyone to come up with a better kitten name than Fezziwigs! 7y

Pickpick

So I have just finished The Old Curiosity Shop. I enjoyed his descriptive writing so much and it was often poetic. As for the narrative I thought it plodded along, sometimes a little to slow but picked up a pace towards the end.

My next read is staying in London though in a rather different genre!

There are certainly people #losttogether in The Old Curiosity Shop #TimbitTunes Prompt 21 @Cinfhen @TheKidUpstairs

Izai.Amorim The Aaronovich series was lots of fun. 7y
