American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition
American Gods: The Tenth Anniversary Edition: A Novel | Neil Gaiman
First published in 2001, American Gods became an instant classican intellectual and artistic benchmark from the multiple-award-winning master of innovative fiction, Neil Gaiman. Now discover the mystery and magic of American Gods in this tenth anniversary edition. Newly updated and expanded with the authors preferred text, this commemorative volume is a true celebration of a modern masterpiece by the one, the only, Neil Gaiman. A storm is coming . . . Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the magic day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life. But just days before his release, Laura and Shadows best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. A trickster and rogue, Wednesday seems to know more about Shadow than Shadow does himself. Life as Wednesdays bodyguard, driver, and errand boy is far more interesting and dangerous than Shadow ever imaginedit is a job that takes him on a dark and strange road trip and introduces him to a host of eccentric characters whose fates are mysteriously intertwined with his own. Along the way Shadow will learn that the past never dies; that everyone, including his beloved Laura, harbors secrets; and that dreams, totems, legends, and myths are more real than we know. Ultimately, he will discover that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewingan epic war for the very soul of Americaand that he is standing squarely in its path. Relevant and prescient, American Gods has been lauded for its brilliant synthesis of mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose (Michael Dirda, Washington Post Book World) and as a modern phantasmagoria that distills the essence of America (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). It is, quite simply, an outstanding work of literary imagination that will endure for generations.

OK story but a bit rambling. I was not sure what to expect. Had not seen any of the series which is probably a bit different. Shadow is a man who is involved with several gods in America. For those who like Gaiman.

I enjoyed this story but I‘m not a big fantasy reader so found myself lost at certain points. It‘s more of a me problem than a book problem. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

CatLass007 Do you have any interest in mythology? I didn‘t know about a lot of mythology from other cultures so I found that part confusing and interesting. The mythologies I‘m most familiar with are Greek and Roman. I don‘t even remember if there were any Greek and Roman myths in this book. 10mo

AnnCrystal Oh, I really liked that cover!

I was incredibly excited when this released. Was not difficult to find either, being that it is by Neil Gaiman...

Maybe I'm just easily insulted...perhaps I didn't give the story a chance???? Some people liked this...Probably just wasn't for me...

AnnCrystal Don't get me wrong, Neil Gaiman had an interesting story here. That the old Gods followed their people to new lands... actually, quite interesting. I always believed that possible.

I had just assumed that this book was about something else, I jumped to conclusions from merely the title and a brief description. It wasn't until I brought the book home that I realized my mistake 😂. I felt tricked...I'm a terrible sport!

Ok I waffled a lot yesterday but these are my options for picks @mrsmarch @BookmarkTavern
I know Witch‘s Heart would be a reread for @mrsmarch & the tagged book is probably too long for this 😬 but I‘m game if y‘all are. #lmpbc myths group

BookmarkTavern I‘ve read American Gods and really enjoyed it. Both Lore and The Witch‘s Heart have been on my TBR so I‘d be down for either of those! 14mo

5feet.of.fury @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks I‘m going to warn you that all 3 of our books are well above the recommended page count just so you know what you are in for 😂 none are as long as Babel though. I‘ll defer to @mrsmarch since this is her baby, but no problems here haha 14mo

Well that was quite the wild road-trip!

I *think* I enjoyed it... certainly it kept me reading (and I enjoyed playing "spot the divinity") but I've no wish to watch the TV show: the visuals inside my head are quite enough to be going on with.

Creative, intriguing, and - at times - perplexing. I wonder what the gods thought of this modern take on mythology and human beliefs. I love the concept, even if I didn‘t love the book. I won‘t be watching the TV show, but I might read the sequel… if Gaiman is truly working on one.

Tried listening to this book last year but for whatever reason I couldn‘t get into it. So I marked it as DNF and moved on to my next book. At the beginning of April, I gave it another shot. I found myself intrigued as I listened to the beginning for the second time, and listening to it was not the chore that it was the first time. Neil Gaiman has moved back to the top of my list of favorite authors. I‘m glad I tried this book again. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If Harry Stephen Keeler had ever written one his webwork novels that wasn't totally insane, it might have come out something like American Gods. This long sprawling novel never fails to captivate as it tells the story of a new world, old gods on the wane, new gods on the rise, and the universal feelings that lie in gods and humans alike. Gaiman grounds his characters in emotional truth while spinning a most fantastical tale. Well worth the time.

There were a lot of things I liked about this book like how the ancient gods were woven throughout the modern world and the invention of the “modern gods.” Gaiman is an incredibly talented writer.
There were also a lot of things I didn‘t like about the book. There seemed to be a lot of gratuitous sex and violence that did nothing to advance the plot. Also, I didn‘t know what the hell was going on half the time.

2✨ This was a really hard one to read. We mostly follow Shadow who is the son of Odin. We also have other new gods like the god of the internet. Of course we have old gods namely Loki so a lot of mischief happens. It was hard to follow because it mentions items that I should know about based on actual mythology. Maybe I missed something, but I was struggling. It‘s written well, but not one I‘m going to finish the series on.

persephone1408 @Roary47 the show is hard to watch also, but I absolutely LOVED Madd Sweeney! 2y

American Gods is THE BOOK that kicked off my life of pleasure reading after college. It was recommended to me by the book buyer at the small, indie bookstore where I was employed; I‘d like to think I would‘ve found my way here without her & without Neil Gaiman…but who knows?

This was a reread to prep for getting a tattoo inspired by one of the characters (the goddess Easter/Ostara). It was just as enchanting & multilayered as I remember. 👇🏻

monalyisha Funny story: Though I‘ve read AG a few times now, I‘d never listened to it. I adored this full-cast performance & was so taken with Shadow‘s voice that I researched the actor, fully expecting him to be *smoking* hot 🔥. Daniel Oreskes isn‘t quite the sex symbol I was imagining. 😅 Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. 3y
monalyisha Also, at the end of this specific audio edition, we‘re treated to a deleted scene in which Shadow meets Jesus. Gaiman says he *almost* put it back in when creating the Author‘s Preferred Text. I‘m glad he didn‘t. 😬 3y
TheKidUpstairs Loved this book. They filmed some of the series in my town, but I've tried twice now to get into it and I just can't do it... 3y
See All 8 Comments
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs I‘ve only tried the show once but I *have* been thinking of trying again. That doesn‘t bode well. 🙈 I also genuinely disliked The Magicians adaptation (& was largely alone in that opinion). The only book + movie pairing I can say I‘ve loved is Practical Magic. 3y
vivastory I love this review! AG is one of my favorites of all time. I wasn't aware of the bonus scene & it does sound... unnecessary. I plan on buying the annotated edition soon. I like your tattoo idea! I've had an idea for one for a few years & I'm still playing around with some of the elements I want to incorporate, but I have most of the outline the same as it's been for the past few years 3y
vivastory @TheKidUpstairs That's awesome that they filmed it in your town! I have to admit I was underwhelmed by season 1. I haven't even bothered with the second season 3y
Clare-Dragonfly Ha, I had a similar experience with John McWhorter, whose face did not live up to his voice for me 😆 I also loved this book, and tried to watch the TV show, but felt it was super excessively violent and gory. 3y
ponyflorist I only recently read it, thoroughly enjoyed 🙂 3y
