When I first read this novel I remember feeling short-changed at how the story of Dune had just fizzled out. I enjoyed it more now because I get what I missed as a younger man. Also, I recently read Brian Herbert‘s Paul of Dune which is set between Frank‘s first two novels. Yes, Frank is mystical, philosophical and profound while Brian and his co-writer are just straight up action/pulp sci-fi, but, for me, the combined books make a great trilogy.

Bookwomble I first read the trilogy in a single volume and just went through them all as one book, so that's how I still think of them. I love all three parts. Poor Muad'Dib 🐁 3w

One of the best sequels ever I dare to say. Great follow-up to the first book. The ending manages to wrap everything up so neatly and it has some of the best characters I will ever remember from a book.

Just started Dune: Messiah this morning, interesting so far!

I also prefer my books to be well worn and used, shows they were read! I know that is sacrilege to many readers though 🤣

This book is a bit shorter so hopefully I can finish it within the next few days 😊

Sequel to Dune, it is good. Easier to understand in my opinion, and highlights how people always want a revolution.

This was my first audiobook ever. As expected, I had a tough time staying focused, though the Wikipedia plot summary did help a little. As for the book itself: meh. I remember being fond of the first book, and I adore the most recent movie adaptation, but this sequel just didn‘t feel as immersive as I would have liked it to be. Maybe the medium just wasn‘t right…

Overall I enjoyed this one more than the book 1 - but I loved so much the world in the first installment and now I missed vivid descriptions of surroundings.

I liked Paul so much more now than at the end of the book 1. This book showed what Paul felt and what he was afraid of.

I liked how there were some twists and I wanted so badly to see how things will end.

Writing made this again a bit arduous to read.

TheSpineView Great job! 3y
Graywacke Your are in sparse territory if you like this better than the first book. 🙂 I recently reread the first book and it was work. So I‘m a bit hesitant to pick up Dune Messiah again. (edited) 3y

PageShifter @Graywacke Haha, well I actually gave pick-rating for the first book and so-so for this one. Overall I think I liked this more but the details about surroundings/life in general were more vivid in the first book. Sometimes “overall enjoyment“ isn't enough, there were other things that were better in the first book so I still rated it higher. 3y
Graywacke @PageShifter I think I know what you mean. I thought the first book was something special, even if I didn‘t love rereading recently. 3y
PageShifter @Graywacke yep it was quite heavy book. But also something refreshing unique and for that reason I had to appreciate it. But I have to say I don't think I am going to read it again 😄 3y

I‘m really glad I read the preface written by Herbert‘s son first because it kind of gave showed you what was to come with Paul. I did like this one, but not as much as Dune.

I'm a little disappointed.. this sequel had all the elements to be an excellent book (just like Dune) but the plot was all over the places and too mystical for my tastes.

DivineDiana I was wondering about the sequel. 🤔 3y
Bookwomble This is still a 5⭐ book for me, if only for Scytale the Tleilaxu Face Dancer 🙂 3y

I wanted to like it more than I did, but oh well. It was fine, but I don‘t think anything can compare to the mystery and grandeur of the first book and the social ecology that grounds it. Maybe I‘ll read the 3rd book in time but I‘m not in any rush…

Yeah this one was just ok. As a sequel to a super f## long book I feel like this one wasn‘t as interesting as the original. I‘d give it a pass tho, because at least it was shorter.

An intense tale, it is truly a page-turner. At 275 pages, it's not long, but heavy topics centering on gulit, destiny, love, and what it means to be a person persist throughout the novel. A great sequel to Dune.

Finally finished the second Dune book, I am definitely excited to continue the series. I feel like I have to expand my mind to understand and try to predict anything but it‘s super interesting!!!

snowpaws94 How was the second one compared to the first! I was thinking about continuing the series but each book is so long. 4y
TugstenDragon @snowpaws94 Dune Messiah is less than 300 pages so it‘s a bit shorter, it‘s a lot less action and basically all politics and trying to outsmart each other, I think the first was a better book but the seconds not bad if your into that stuff. 4y

Set 12 years after Dune, Dune Messiah chronicles the continued exploits of those never-boring Atreides kids on Arrakis. Paul is Emperor and Alia is Reverend Mother.

While not as epic in scope as (and much shorter than) Dune, this novel kept me turning pages as the Atreides are engrossing characters and always up to something, and there were some interesting folks introduced who factored heavy in the goings-on. Looking forward to continuing on.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I can see where readers began to dislike Paul but I understood that it was the way it had to be. This book is very political and there‘s a bit of red tape to follow but I look forward to the next one. #dune #scifi #litsy #recommend

BehindthePages I always want to try Dune, then back away due to the politics. 4y
jouleian @BehindthePages it‘s more about the architecture of politics and how they fall apart rather than political views. Kind of like seeing HOW the gears and cogs work together and not so much WHY. It‘s fascinating actually. 4y

A moment's prevarication before committing to moving from Dune to Dune Messiah, but, a) this Pennington cover is boss, and; b) it has some of my favourite characters in it, not least Scytale, the Bene Tleilax Face Dancer, a shape-shifting assassin who, as a matter of honour, always gives their intended victim a means of escaping the fate prepared for them (though, yeah, it's about a 0.001% chance!).

Dune is a favorite, I marvel at how well-crafted it is each reread. Like the first book, there‘s a mix of philosophy, political and religious commentary, strong character-development (albeit male-centric) that I find engaging. Messiah deepens our knowledge of political forces in interesting ways. Otherworldliness is the landscape and character and the outliers, while seen as freaks within the world, are the most compelling for the reader.

Finally took time to finish part two of the saga and (again) LOVED IT! This time fronting as a political thriller F Herbert skips from the Muad‘dibs ascent to power in book one directly to the breaking point of the Atreides Empire. A deep, diverese and poetic meditation on religion, motherhood, love and death.
