The #pink on this one is subtle, but I figured this collection of fairytale retelling was perfect for #colormepretty day 24!
Happy PRIDE month! Y‘all got any good recommendations to fit this challenge?
(I have already read Kissing the Witch by Emma Donoghue and would wholly recommend)
The prompt that almost made me skip #booked2019, #fairytaleretelling. As I told @LauraBeth “I‘m 41, I‘m not reading a damn fairytale.” Donoghue is one of my absolute favorite authors but even with her sometimes queer take on old favorites, I found this to be a bit of a slog. It‘s very short thankfully but I just didn‘t have much interest. Thankfully it is done! 2.75🌟
Films: Ever After and Ella Enchanted. I have not read the book, Ella Enchanted but I plan on reading it at some point.
Books: Crimson Bound and Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge, Uprooted by Naomi Novik, Kissing the Witch by Emma Dongohue, Circe by Madeline Miller, and The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman

The retellings are so unique and wonderfully written. The writing in this is so beautiful I‘m definitely going to read more of Donoghue‘s books. And I loved how all the fairytales are connected which I did not notice until half way through. So clever. I loved this, definitely recommend for anyone! 5/5 🌟
Amazing collection of stories from one of my favorite authors.

I found out about Emma Donoghue through Book Riot's #readharder challenge. I read Kissing the Witch for #20 A book with a cover you hate, and I loved it! "Old tales with new skins" is an excellent description of it.
After reading Astray, I've become a fan and I can't wait to read Room and so much more from this #femaleauthor
#Readingresolutions @Jess7
Even though it was a required reading, I did enjoy the book. A few points made me uncomfortable, but that‘s fairytales for you. The retellings were progressive in some ways (hell yeah, feminism and lesbians abound!) but also many of the characters were white. Expected from a book based on old European fairtales, but for a book written in 1997, it was still progressive with the LGBT and feminism. NOT a book for kids! 4.5/5 stars

I‘ve had this on my shelf for nearly a decade. It‘s right in my wheelhouse - I love Emma Donahue, fairy tales and dark adaptations. The only reason I can think that I hadn‘t gotten around to it is shallow - I really don‘t like the cover. Thanks to the @bookriot #ReaderHarderChallenge, I had a reason to pick it up. And I loved it (of course). Gorgeous book with a cover that doesn‘t express it. There you go 😊
Day 26 #JubilantJuly #controversial It wasn't a bad day but it's been a long day/week/month & as I was trying to think of controversial books to pull tonight, it occurred to me that today's .50 cent library bookstore find: Emma Donoghue's Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins-retold fairy tales from a feminist & lesbian perspective (& released as YA in the U.S.) must be controversial with certain groups. So I went with it! 📚👍#neededaneasywin
Returned books to the library & renewed The Boy on the Bridge-hopefully 4th time's (if you count the audiobook I didn't get to) a charm. I want to finish it but other books keep grabbing my attention.😬Farmer Boy is for virtual foodie bookclub-my hosting pick for Aug/Sept & the tagged book I nabbed for .50 cents from the bookstore. The librarian offered up 'library swag'-pen, pouch & coupon😆Doesn't Max look excited to pose with it? 😽#catsoflitsy

SOS: I need sticker removal tips!
Linked stories subverting fairy tales that feature women who love each other and are not trying to tear each other down. The prince is not the prize. This is Donoghue, so the stories are spare and subtle and clever. Meant for teenagers but adults will also enjoy this dreamlike collection and its destabilisation of gender roles and relations. #ikissedagirl #junetunz @Cinfhen
Day 24 of #riotgrams - kissing books. I figured I'd count the book I'm #currentlyreading as it has "kissing" in the title. So far, I'm really enjoying this collection of fairytale retellings.
Kicking off #24in48 with this book which is the January pick for #feministorchestra book club! I am LOVING these fairytale retellings so far 😍
So I may or may not have a book buying problem (I totally have a book buying problem 😳) #bookhaul but in my defense these all sound AMAZING and were on sale so....
A gorgeously written collection of #fairytaleretellings with #feminist and queer twists. They somehow feel old and cozy, like stories that have been around for centuries but new and shiny and innovative at the same time. #queerbooks
Today's theme for the #AllHallowsRead #photoadaychallenge is a Halloween book that's not scary. I really enjoyed this short, little book. From the title and the cover I had expected it to be somewhat scary, but that wasn't the case.
