A Man Called Ove
A Man Called Ove: A Novel | Fredrik Backman
Read the New York Times bestseller that has taken the world by storm!Meet Ove. Hes a curmudgeonthe kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him the bitter neighbor from hell. But must Ove be bitter just because he doesnt walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Oves mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents association to their very foundations. A feel-good story in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Major Pettigrews Last Stand, Fredrik Backmans novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. If there was an award for Most Charming Book of the Year, this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down (Booklist, starred review).

I read this years ago and really want to see this. However, the trailer doesn‘t depict the serious matters in this book. Lots of trigger warnings and not appropriate for children. I‘m not sure if I‘ll see it with my husband who has had soldiers commit suicide 💔 just be aware 💔

Bklover Thank you for the warning!❤️ 3d
xicanti When I read the book, I was amazed all the reviews I saw ahead of time emphasized the comedy without even mentioning the multiple suicide attempts. They‘re definitely something people should be aware of going in. 3d
PageShifter Yeah for me it was definitely more sad and tragic book than comedy. I don't understand how some stories are marketed wrong. That was the reason why I didn't like Beach Read: it was marketed as a fluffy and fun book and it was quite serious. Otherwise I might have liked it, not when sold wrong. 3d

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @xicanti yes!! People are taking their kids to see this because the trailer looks light and fluffy 😫 2d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @PageShifter thanks for the warning on Beach Read! I haven‘t read it yet. I wish they would market books correctly… 2d
Deblovestoread The marketing of this book was way off base. I read it was “laugh out loud funny” so I went into it with that expectation. It was not that and I hated it…unpopular opinion I know. Our local first responder‘s chaplains group is also warning citizens to be aware of the movie‘s content. 2d
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Deblovestoread yes!! I saw a post from a chaplain… I hope people will do their research before watching this. I have dealt with suicide in my family and now I‘m not sure if I want to watch it 💔 2d

I'm aware that I'm in the minority here but I just found this book boring.

Took me forever to get through it also, it was like wading through treacle.

There were some funny moments sure, but mostly it was slow, repetitive and depressing.

Not my cup of tea at all and certainly in my opinion, not worth the hype.

TrishB They‘re not my cup of tea either! 4d
CoffeeAndABook I absolutely felt the same way about it!! Abandoned it somewhere in the middle and just skipped ahead to see how it ends 🫣 4d

lynneamch I listened to it and felt much the same. Just seemed to be making light of a sad and serious issue. I did see the Tom Hanks movie and think it had some redeeming value. 4d
Injeanious Im halfway through the book and still wondering what I‘m missing, that everyone thinks this is such a great book! 3d
sarahbellum I felt similarly! Didn‘t work for me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3d
MerlinTheSlightlyAwkward That‘s totally fair! Anxious People was probably better, but Fredrik Backman novels seem to be all about the average human experience. Describing it artfully, but… sometimes they could have been in essay format 🤷‍♀️ 2d
jitteryjane724 I've only seen the movie but that was pretty good...I wonder if they were able to add more power and intensity to it with film and acting? I guess it comes down to what speaks to you at the time. 1d

I was ready to love the story, but the "trying to kill myself and all this people keep interrupting'" gag went on too long for me.( Also, not to be a downer, but suicide is too serious an issue for this kind of treatment in my opinion) Of course the neatly tied happy ending works for me, because I am a romance fan but I imagine some people might find it too sugary.Still, the Ove character is one of my favorite guys in recent books so it is a pick

Date night last night to see A Man Called Otto! It was so good! I had been looking forward to it since I knew it was being made. It seemed to get almost everything from the book right! Thought Tom Hanks did ‘Ove‘ well. I watched the Swedish film a few years back as well. They were both good in their own ways. #bookintomovie

Kaylamburson So good to hear! I really want to see this. 2w
Aims42 I saw it this weekend and totally agree it matched the book 😁 Tom Hanks was great and the actress who played Marisol was perfect for the role!! I‘m glad I brought some Kleenex though, I cried at the same spots in the movie as I did reading the book 🥹 2w
LaraReads @Aims42 yes I loved Marisol too! I didn‘t quite sob as much at the end as I did with the book, but I was crying most of the movie as well! And my husband hadn‘t read the book, so he had no idea what to expect going in. He said…you might have warned me how sad it would be! 😬 2w

AmyG Good to know. I wasn‘t too sure about this one. 2w
LaraReads @Kaylamburson @AmyG yes, I wasn‘t sure after seeing the trailer either. But I don‘t think the trailer does it justice. Nothing is ever as good as the book, but I think it captures the heart of Ove pretty well. And I really loved how they incorporated the flashbacks. 2w
Kaylamburson That‘s really great! The trailer did not show any signs of sadness. My MIL saw the trailer when we were in town wanting to see it and I told her how I loved the book and she should but that it doesn‘t seem to explain what it‘s about at all. I do think the trailer is doing this a disservice. I wouldn‘t have been interested if I hadn‘t read it. @Aims42 2w
LaraReads @Kaylamburson exactly. I agree with all of that! Because when my husband saw the trailer, he was not interested, but he ended up thinking it was really good. 2w

Finished this one today and I‘m not sure how I feel about it, quite frankly. For a novel of less than 300 pages it felt like a hard slog. I didn‘t dislike it, but there were elements that I didn‘t like. It may have got off to a bad start when the main character, a mere 5 years older than I, is behaving like my octogenarian father on a bad day…

First finish for the #JoyousJanuary readathon

@Andrew65

CocoReads I share this #unpopularopinion. In fact, I never finished it. My husband is the very definition of a grumpy old man and it felt too much like I was reading about him. And I know he‘s a popular author but I‘ve had zero desire to read any of his other books. Don‘t care to see the movie either. Although my sister also didn‘t finish the read but she liked the movie. 2w
TheEllieMo @CocoReads It‘s good to know I‘m not the only one who isn‘t raving about it! If it was just a case of a grumpy old man (which my dad is!), it may have been OK, but at times, Ove is downright offensive (which my dad isn‘t!!) 2w
Andrew65 Well done, a good start. 👏👏👏 2w
sarahbellum This one wasn‘t for me either. You‘re not alone! 2w

Backman has such a special way of writing and creating his characters, ensuring you feel emotionally invested in them. Ove proves human connection connecting with people is such a huge piece in life. When you lose your one and only, I can only imagine the gravity of loneliness, hopelessness, disorientation. This book proves that you never know what someone else is going through and a little bit of kindness can go a long way.

So, um, did anyone else see the promo for the film adaptation of "A Man Called Ove" and think "Oh Christ no ..."

?

Texreader Indeed I had that reaction 3mo
wanderinglynn I saw the trailer. I thought the name change was 🙄 But I didn‘t have that reaction. I‘ve been a little crazed lately, so what am I missing? 3mo
swynn @wanderinglynn It's related to the name change. I can't help associating “Otto“ with the German comedian Otto Waalkes, whose brand includes a series of “Otto“ films, books, and a television series. His style is a rapid and relentlessly cheerful stream of one-liners, parody songs, and slapstick -- a sort of human Spongebob. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=otto+waalkes 3mo
See All 10 Comments
DuckOfDoom I had no idea based on the film poster that they meant this book... Why the name change? 3mo
JamieArc @DuckOfDoom If it‘s for an American audience, Ove is not a common name, so the change makes sense to me. 3mo
wanderinglynn Ah. That makes sense. Thanks for letting me know! 😀 3mo
julesG Same! I had Otto Waalkes in mind, too. 🤣🙄 3mo
swynn @DuckOfDoom @JamieArc Yeah, I assume it's to make the character more relatable to an American audience, but I don't know -- the book was pretty popular as "Ove"; don't they risk alienating the audience that made the story popular? I assume there are analysts who understand crowd psychology better than I do making these decisions. 3mo
swynn @julesG 😀👍 3mo
bthegood @swynn you may be giving executives in the film industry too much credit - it might not be anything more than “Americanizing“ the film (general belief that this needs to be done to introduce other cultures into US - like when ethnic food gets Americanized) - not much thought, just a patterned response - If they leave it Ove - people will still see Tom Hanks movie if they like Tom Hanks - the name change at least has people talking about it 🙂 3mo

This charming novel about the cantankerous Ove is darker than I expected, but ultimately an uplifting story. Ove is pretty unlikable at first, but as his backstory is revealed, one can understand why Ove is the man he is. Tragic and laugh out loud funny, I was completely in love with life on this little Swedish street. Even with the novel‘s predictability, this is a story that reminds us that there is always something worth living for. 4⭐️

Wow! The best book I‘ve read this year. Ove is an anachronistic middle aged widow who has a heart of gold but you wouldn‘t know it. He takes nonsense from no one and expects excellence from everyone. There are so many life lessons in this work of fiction that it has to be one of the best books of the decade. Backman uses a very small geographic area to tell this epic story, relying more on deep character development and it works.
