How to Stop Time
How to Stop Time | Matt Haig
'I am old. That is the first thing to tell you. The thing you are least likely to believe. If you saw me you would probably think I was about forty, but you would be very wrong.' Tom Hazard has a dangerous secret. He may look like an ordinary 41-year-old, but owing to a rare condition, he's been alive for centuries. From Elizabethan England to jazz age Paris, from New York to the South Seas, Tom has seen a lot, and now craves an ordinary life. Always changing his identity to stay alive, Tom has the perfect cover - working as a history teacher at a London comprehensive. Here he can teach the kids about wars and witch hunts as if he'd never witnessed them first-hand. He can try and tame the past that is fast catching up with him. The only thing Tom mustn't do is fall in love. How to Stop Time is a wild and bittersweet story about losing and finding yourself, about the certainty of change and about the lifetimes it can take to really learn how to live.

This is my second Matt Haig book. I first was introduced to his writing with The Midnight Library, which is fantastic and highly recommend. I was excited about reading How to Stop Time and I loved it. The story is very thought provoking and that‘s what I enjoy most about the two Haig books I‘ve read so far. I genuinely start feeling more appreciative of the life I have and living day by day. Can‘t wait to start the next Matt Haig book.

I personally found it hard to connect with Tom, but I did love all the timeline weaving and the action, so it's overall a pick from me. But Good Lord, I have never met a character SO unable to see that the world is not actually like their conception of it!! #fiction #allofthegenres

Indie Bookstore Day!!! #ibd
I think last years goodies were nicer, but I really liked the duo “meet me at the bookstore” cloth bag and collapsable water bottle. Although it was the House in the Cerulean Sea character stickers that I was most excited to nab, it‘s an absolute favorite read.
This book grabbed me because of its Addie LaRue vibe; immortal man falls in forbidden love with a mortal.

How to Stop Time took me away on a heart warming journey through the many different lives of Tom Hazard. It reminded me of The Invisible Life of Addie Larue at times in tone and theme but probably because it is a story across centuries dealing with a form of immortality. The ending left me wanting perhaps a little more in relation to the character arc of the daughter but it was wrapped up nicely. You can‘t help but root for these characters.

Tom Hazard has anageria - since puberty he has aged very slowly, about one year bodily aging every fifteen actual years. Always moving on to keep it a secret, he has been looking for his daughter since his wife told him on her deathbed in the 17th century that she had inherited the condition.

Very enjoyable mix of historical and speculative fiction with reflections on how things stay the same even when they don't.

Meh. I love Matt Haig‘s children‘s books, especially about Santa Claus, but this one was too slow for me. The premise was interesting, and I didn‘t mind the flipping from present to past, since I imagine someone who has lived hundreds of years would reminisce a lot, but the overall story was rather anticlimactic, in my opinion.

Sounds like an interesting story on it's own and I was already sold, but I guess it's being made into a movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch? Alright I'm in.

I still need to read The Midnight Library. That's been on my TBR for awhile now. That is the same author right? If not oops.

Also...$79.38 😳

OrangeMooseReads Yes, same author. YIKES! Someone is trying to scam someone. 2y

No blackout, but I managed to get a few bingos for January's #bookspin. The best thing is almost all of these were books off my physical tbr shelf, so yay for actually tackling that monster (...well, a tiny piece of that monster). I am committed to finish this year with fewer books on my shelves than I started the year with. 🤞

1. I‘ve always been fascinated by Tudor England under the rule of Queen Elizabeth.
2. Tagged. Such a great book and now being made into a movie.

I liked this one a lot more than Midnight Library. I went into it fairly blind as to the plot, and it was just really good.

This was my 7th finished book for the year off my physical tbr shelves, so I'm super excited about that. Good start for my goal to finish 180 this year.

At first I wasn‘t sure about this as I thought it would be too similar to Addie LaRue. However, I ended up liking it more than Addie.

It seemed to have a simpler concept / storyline, which made it easier to read and get engrossed in. I‘m not a huge fan of fantasy and this was also less fantastical than Addie, if that‘s possible with an MC who doesn‘t grow old!

Thank you for sending this to me Victoria @Birdsong28 ! 😘

I‘ll also continue with Apples Never Fall on audio. I *might* finish it this week, depending on how much work I have on and how many #audiowalks I get to do. If I do finish it then I‘ll move onto the Gucci audio, recommended by you Cindy!

Tom Hazard has a dangerous secret. He may look like an ordinary 41-year-old history teacher, but he's been alive for centuries. This was a nice surprise! It was an impulse buy at a discount book store. I hadn't heard much about it, but it was cheap and sounded intriguing. I enjoyed it so much! I've not had great luck with recent books, so maybe this was a case of "right book, right time." It was just what I was looking for. Incredibly readable with some lovely aphorisms throughout ❤.

I picked this book up when I was on my vacation and I was instantly drawn into the store that spans centuries. Narrated by the MC he tells his story of loves lost and the history he has lived while searching for someone important to him. I love Mr Haig‘s writing style. Great escape and perfect as a vacation read.

NikkiM5 Did you like Under the Sugar Sky? It was the first book in the series that I didn‘t enjoy. I wondered if all the sugar stuff was a turnoff or if it was too out there for me. I‘ve been dying to get more opinions on this book. 😂 3y
Read-y_Picker @NikkiM5 I‘m surprised at how much I‘ve been enjoying these. Honestly, from the way it was described in the first book? I didn‘t find Confection to be THAT outrageous. I like the way McGuire is introducing these new worlds. I was concerned that it was all going to be a bunch of back stories like Sticks and Bones. And even though some of the themes seem a little obvious and childish, I found that they were delivered in a way that makes you 3y

Read-y_Picker @NikkiM5 realize that even grown ups sometimes need reminders of the importance of self worth and belonging. I found it really touching. 3y
NikkiM5 Thanks for your review, I am still going to continue the series for sure. I loved the other books so I‘m hooked. I read Sugar Sky a couple months ago (so I have forgotten quite a bit other than it was the only one I had to force to finish.) I‘m putting Green Grass Fields on my bingo next month to get back into the series. 3y

Read-y_Picker @LoverOfLearning I'm glad! I was expecting to like it a lot more than I did, though. Just never got hooked but I enjoyed the twist at the end. Unfortunately is was wayyyy at the end and also the only real twist. Still a great author. I enjoy his work overall. 3y

A delightful read that felt personally tailored to my interests (history! music! Shakespeare! Fitzgerald!) while telling the story of love(s) that span centuries. My first book by Haig, but I‘m now eager to read more of his work — especially The Midnight Library, which is already waiting on my shelf.

“History isn‘t something you need to bring to life. History already is alive. We are history. History isn‘t politicians or kings or queens. History is everyone. It is everything. It‘s that coffee. You could explain much of the whole history of capitalism and empire and slavery just by talking about coffee. The amount of blood and misery that has taken place for us to sit here and sip coffee out of paper cups is incredible.”

12-7-20: My 103rd finished book of 2020! Tom looks about 41 but he has really been living with a rare condition for centuries! He ages slower than regular humans. Told in present day and back during other times of Tom‘s past, we see the extraordinary life he has led. However, Tom is tired and ready for an ordinary life. This means he has to go against The Society who is helping him find his daughter. Very interesting read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣1️⃣0️⃣3️⃣

I think I finally got (momentarily) tired of a steady comfort diet of cozy mystery and romance and I‘m looking for more substance; so these are my potential Sunday afternoon brain food picks. I feel like the pandemic is starting to be untenable again and I‘m in full on hibernation mode but I‘m not liking it.

LiteraryinLawrence I really recommend the Frankel book. 💗💗💗 And I completely agree with you about the pandemic. I had to go out yesterday to run a couple errands, and I sort of mentally prepared myself that I wouldn‘t be going out again for a long time. (edited) 3y
