Born a Crime is a collection of stories from Trevor Noah‘s childhood growing up in South Africa in the final days of apartheid and the early days of democracy. It was heart wrenching and funny and appalling and sweet, so many emotions. It was great!!

This is one of my all time favorite books and I think can be included in #ownvoices. so thank you @silentrequiem for getting me to go through all my books for your giveaway #ownvoicesgiveaway and remember this great book and examine my books for this entry!

Runners up were: Vivian Chen‘s mystery series and Crazy Rich Asians. (Also this has kickstarted me to add more #ownvoices to my selves and tbr)

Finished this gem a while ago, a little late to the party. And what a wonderful #audiobook it was 😍 It was hyped up as one of *the best* audiobooks ever, and I must say I agree! I laughed and I cried, Trevor is such a good storyteller!! I joined Audible just to get access to this, worth it!

5⭐️

On another note, I sadly haven‘t been able to read much lately, life is just too busy at the moment. Hopefully by May it should get a tad better🤞🏻

Mrs.C I have been dying to listen to this one!!! I might just have to resubscribe again so I can finally listen! 5y
hilded @Tashaxlynn I don‘t think it would have been the same reading it, even though I‘m sure it‘s good that way also. But Trevor just really brought the story to life. So I say, go for it 😊 5y

Our Pearls pick for the month of April is Born A Crime by Trevor Noah. There are so many history lessons that Mr. Noah is bestowing upon us that I never knew about and I‘m in utter shock. I‘m only a few chapters in and this one line made me pause and say it out loud a few times over. “Why teach someone Latin when his only purpose was to did holes in the ground”.

SW-T The history bits impressed me. Didn‘t realize how little I actually knew about apartheid til I read this 😕 5y
Bookpearl @SW-T I knew some but clearly not what he experienced. Have you read Kaffir Boy? 5y
SW-T No, but looks like it‘s going on my TBR! Thanks for the recommendation of 5y

February Wrap-up 📚

I read a lot more than I thought I‘d be able to this month, most of which ended up being same day reads because I just didn‘t want to leave the worlds I walked into. I‘ve taken so much away in what seems like such a short amount of time and I can‘t wait to see where next month takes me.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Great books there! 📖💖 5y
Centique Wow you read a lot! I can see a few there that are on my TBR list. I just got my 86 year old Dad to read Born A Crime. He was so in awe of Trevor‘s mom - we all are aren‘t we! 🙌🙌 5y

I read this in one day. I couldn‘t put it down. It was engrossing, heart-warming, funny and tear jerking. The real star of this story is Trevor Noah‘s mother who has such inspiring courage.

TheShaggyShepherd I will be getting this soon from the library and am really excited for it. I just wish they had the audio version too. I heard it‘s really good on audio. 5y
HrJust @IvoryLunatic I guess it‘s only on audible. He narrates it though and I always love when the authors narrate their own book. :) 5y

Excellent memoir! Loved the South African history mixed in with his personal story. Don‘t think anything I could say would do it justice. Beautifully written, beautifully told.

Glad he learned to fish and was given a fishing pole. Such a sharp mind and wonderful spirit.

One of the best memoirs I've ever read. Noah's story is engaging, introspective, hilarious, and filled with love, curiosity, and an innate understanding of people. In addition, this book provides a much needed education and first-person narrative on South African history and culture.

This is one of my favorite reads from this year! Trevor Noah reflects on his experiences growing up in South Africa during the Apartheid. Although he describes segregation & discrimination, he still finds ways to insert humor into the story. Also if you like audiobooks, Trevor Noah's narration is wonderful. Warning: there are some mentions of animal abuse, specifically in regards to cats.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Trevor Noah, a comedian and host of The Daily Show, focuses here on his childhood growing up in post- apartheid South Africa. It is an easy read in the sense that it is well honed, with a comics sense of finding the humour in some of the most troubling observations and emotionally devastating aspects.

This is also a mother-son love story. I could have read a book consisting entirely of the exchanges between Noah and his mother.

I was recommended this book by a co-worker. It was an interesting memoir about growing up in South Africa under the later years of apartheid. It was a big eye opener about what really went on during those times. It was surprising, horrifying and funny all at the same time.

This book actually lives up to all the hype. Trevor Noah writes about serious topics in his life (apartheid, domestic violence) with a deft and humorous touch. I laughed. Towards the end I teared up. Also, his mother is clearly an incredible woman. Definitely recommended!

Trevor gives us a hilarious and harrowing look into what life was like before and after apartheid.

This book is so enriching, not just in the way Mr Noah manages to analyse culture and race and the cruel realities that they shape, but also in the way he discusses Apartheid and its insidious and horrible nature. Honestly, I feel like I learned so much through reading his experiences, both funny and heartbreaking. And his mother is definitely an incredible and strong woman. I also may have cried during the last 20 pages. Brilliant read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I know most of Litsy has read this (or listened to the audiobook), but if you haven‘t - it is SO worth your time. What I loved best about this was that my entire family wanted to listen to it after they heard it in the car (the only CD player we have). One day the husband and I drove around aimlessly, listening to it. I learned more about Apartheid than I ever learned in school. I‘m sad that I waited so long to finally listen to this.

RaimeyGallant I have it on hold! 6y

I listened to this book on audible, which I think definitely helped the experience. It was kind of like sitting in the car with Trevor Noah himself chatting about his life. I liked that he told stories, not necessarily in chronological order, and that he made some pretty profound insights into society and the workings of the world while he was at it, without sounding preachy.

I listened to this book and I think it is the best way to "read" it. I really enjoyed this little glimpse into the life of Trevor Noah. The book jumps around a lot so do not expect it to follow a chronological order. There is also a lot of cussing so if you are listening to the book wear earphones around the kiddos.
