Suite Francesa
Suite Francesa | Irčne Némirovsky
Beginning in Paris on the eve of the Nazi occupation in 1940. Suite Franaise tells the remarkable story of men and women thrown together in circumstances beyond their control. As Parisians flee the city, human folly surfaces in every imaginable way: a wealthy mother searches for sweets in a town without food; a couple is terrified at the thought of losing their jobs, even as their world begins to fall apart. Moving on to a provincial village now occupied by German soldiers, the locals must learn to coexist with the enemyin their town, their homes, even in their hearts. When Irne Nmirovsky began working on Suite Franaise, she was already a highly successful writer living in Paris. But she was also a Jew, and in 1942 she was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where she died. For sixty-four years, this novel remained hidden

New Year‘s Eve supper & my final book of 2022 #ReadAndEat

Including only 2 parts of a planned 5 part novel set during the occupation of France in WWII, this book is unfinished because the author died at Auschwitz. Yes, the story of the story is part of what makes it great, but it also clearly and unflinchingly details the experiences of individuals caught up in the chaos of war. ⬇️

Daisey Part 1, Storm in June, switches between several characters from various situations as they attempt to flee Paris. Part 2, Dolce, focuses on the interactions of French villagers and the occupying German troops. Many of the details describe the clash between class as much as between French & German.

Sometimes I wonder if the #1001books list is worth continuing, but then it leads me to a book like this! #Reading1001 #TBRTakedown December 2022

"It wasn‘t exactly what you‘d call fear, rather a strange sadness—a sadness that had nothing human about it any more, for it lacked both courage and hope. This was how animals waited to die. It was the way fish caught in a net watch the shadow of the fisherman moving back and forth above them."

mom2bugnbee Random thing that happened this morning - my right handed 15yo daughter was cutting a loaf of bread with her left hand. When I asked her why, she said that she always has used the knife in her left hand, because she simply didn't see the point of switching hands as most Americans do. FIFTEEN YEARS and I've never noticed 4y
Lcsmcat @mom2bugnbee That‘s priceless! I‘ve never switched, but that‘s because I‘m left handed. 4y

Two things to celebrate on #read99women today: Julie Langsdorf recommends SUITE FRANCAISE ("a miracle of a book"), and her own whip-smart debut WHITE ELEPHANT is now available in paperback! For more on both books: http://www.greermacallister.com/blog/2020/1/28/read99women-julie-langsdorf

The first part this book depicts life of Parisian refugees fleeing the German occupation of Paris. The author follows different families as they try to survive life on the road. The second part of the book shows a glimpse of the life in a French village that is occupied by the Germans. This book was published posthumously and I would have loved to read the author‘s finished manuscript.

Wonderful friends will give you books for Christmas... but only the most wonderful of friends will give books to your family members as well! When Branwen heard that my father is a history buff and reads a lot about World War II, she was thoughtful enough to send him this historical novel! Thank you for always being so kind and considerate, Becky, you‘re a superhero even Supergirl and Batgirl could look up to! 😊

Branwen Ahhhhhhh my friend, you are getting me all teary eyed! 😢 I hope it brings a smile to your dad's face! *hygs* I am so lucky to have you as my friend! 😃💕 6y

Country 50: back to France. In honor of my countryside-set book, visited multiple locations in the countryside/coastline, such as Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and Marseille. Too bad I missed the Cannes Film Festival!
Nemirovsky's story is so sad - she is a talented writer who was killed in Auschwitz. Her writing feels urgent, and was left unfinished. Good but I found her own story more compelling. 3/5

Such a great look at the crowds fleeing Paris in June 1942, and of a town in occupied France. Written shortly after and during the time these events were occurring, Nemirovsky never got the chance to finish her 5-part book. These are the first 2 parts. Her notes for the other 3 parts are appendix 1. 2 days after her last note she was arrested. She died at Auschwitz a month later. The survival of the manuscript is a story itself. #1001books

Loved it! What is an amazing story was only a draft, as this was to be a five part story. The author was arrested and murdered in Auschwitz before she could complete the book. This was only found years later. This magical writing was a draft.

Zelma I love this book and really appreciate all of the background info about Nemirovsky that was included. I think that made me love the book even more. ❤️ 6y

This was an incredible book for many different reasons. The book itself is a masterfully told work that lets us witness the evacuation of Paris in 1940 prior to the Nazi occupation and then a glimpse of life in the French countryside during the occupation. The story behind the book‘s publication and the death of the author in Auschwitz makes this book all the more poignant. It is a real tribute to the power of the human spirit.

A book about World War Two, written before the war was over. The author planned for the book to be longer, but was killed in the course of the war before she could finish it. It was interesting to see what people notice about what is important around them, vs what we focus on with hindsight.

Going to Paris next week, thought I should read something themed!

About the author:
“In 1918 her family fled the Russian Revolution for France where she became a bestselling novelist. Prevented from publishing when the Germans occupied France in 1940, she moved with her husband and two small daughters from Paris to the safety of [...] German occupied territory. It was here that Iréne began writing Suite Française. She died in Auschwitz in 1942.”
