Birdsong | Sebastian Faulks
While staying as the guest of a factory owner in pre-First World War France, Stephen Wraysford embarks on a passionate affair with Isabelle, the wife of his host. The affair changes them both for ever. A few years later Stephen finds himself back in the same part of France, but this time as a soldier in the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest encounter in British military history. As his men die around him, Stephen turns to his enduring love for Isabelle for the strength to continue and to save something for future generations. For the first time, this beautiful and terrible story about love, courage and the endurance of the human spirit is brought to the stage in a version by Rachel Wagstaff, directed by famed director Trevor Nunn.

A stunning depiction of the horrors of war, I thought this was beautifully written. Can one really come back from something like that and live a normal life? It's so hard to imagine. I wasn't too keen on the romance but the rest will stay with me long after the last page.

I have seen this play twice as you can see by the same but different programmes in the photo with the book in the foreground.

An incredibly powerful story of a time that was so unpleasant. Faulks weaves a fictional tale with actual events to make the story resonate and can‘t help but feel impacted by the horrors of World War I. There‘s fighting, injury, the most horrific death and PTSD yet the story is compelling and told with compassion. A brilliant, brilliant book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book has been recommended to me by a multitude of people and now that I got a copy from the library, it has a TV cover. Anyone read the book or seen the show? I‘m tempted to go straight to TV for this and read something else instead, blasphemous as that might be. 😂 #ialreadyhavemorebooksthanicanreadwereitolivetobe120yearsold

Freespirit I read it about 20 years ago. I liked it. I still remember some of the scenes from the trenches. It would make a great movie 6mo

Birdsong28 Do not go to watch the T.V movie as it cuts out about 50% of the book (I know typical 🙄) also the book is so good as it is so atmospheric and beautiful. I am slightly biased tho as it's my favourite book, so much I use it for my Litsy handle 😀. But if you do want to watch it do it after you have read the book. I also seen the play twice! @Swe_Eva 6mo
Swe_Eva @Birdsong28 Hmm, I may do it the other way around - watch first, then read. I have heard so many good words about the book. Decisions, decisions. 6mo
Freespirit Let us know what you think once you've read/ watched it @Swe_Eva 😊 6mo
Swe_Eva @Freespirit @Caroline2 I've now seen the TV version and can only say that @Birdsong28 is right. The show is fantastic (great cast and the mood is beautiful), but you can tell that there is a lot missing. I will absolutely read the book. 6mo

So evocative of a time & the feelings - love & pain - in a beautifully written tale. However, a bit like Captain Corelli's Mandolin, it's a book of two pieces and could have been better tied together.

@Birdsong28 finished last night but wanted to absorb my thoughts! What a wonderful book about a generally horrific subject. I think the author‘s introduction to this version is so spot on - did actions in this war change the benchmark for what was acceptable in depravity and humanity?
The little stories embedded in the main one were just as powerful as the main story.

Birdsong28 @TrishB That is how I feel about him! As you feel sorry for him about Isabelle but then in the War he is so cold about it all but at the end as he helps Jack in the Underground I feel he gets redeemed a bit. #MarchIntothe70s #AllTheYoungDudes I loved this book & Im thinking of all those young dudes who went off to war - who go off to war ... any war , every war .... 💔

Lizpixie This sounds lovely but very sad. I‘ve always loved history, especially war, both the fighting & human cost but also the politics & power plays behind it all. WWI is my focus at the moment, when I researched my genealogy I found two family members who were at the Somme & one at Gallipoli. Terrible times. 10mo

I read Wilfred Owen‘s WWI poetry this year for a challenge (book you were assigned in school and hated!) and was so incredibly moved by it.

I don‘t think I was prepared for the experience of reading this book. It took me much longer to read it than most books, but it wasn‘t because I was not interested.

Almost like 3 books in one: a love story, a WWI story, and the story of a woman‘s search for knowledge of her ancestors. Every single part of it it was deeply affecting, and so incredibly well-written. I‘m going to need a moment.

Cathythoughts @Melissa_J thanks 🙏🏻 it‘s a special book I think ❤️ 1y
Birdsong28 I am glad you have enjoyed it, I wish I could have the joy of starting it afresh. When I have seen either the BBC adaptation or the play it just focuses on the war so when I recently re-read it I had completely forgot that there was the bits in the 1970's and to be honest it doesn't really add to the beautiful love story and the poginant war story. 😘📚📖 1y
Cathythoughts @Birdsong28 I was ok with the 1970s bits. I was ok with it all really. I welcomed the 1970s - they were very brief chapters & I found them interesting too & a relief from the intensity. I have Charlotte Gray waiting ! But I think I‘ll take a break before I go there. 👍🏻💫❤️ (edited) 1y
Birdsong28 Yeah I can see that it is an intense book. Charlotte Grey is the third in the French 'trilogy' as Birdsong is 'first' then Girl at the lion d'Or is 'second' but it's not an official trilogy. I also have them on my TBR. 😀📚📖 1y
Cathythoughts @birdsong28 have you read ENGLEBY? ... 1y
Birdsong28 @Cathythoughts Not read Engleby have looked at it a few times is it good? ❤️📚📖 1y
Cathythoughts @Birdsong28 I think it‘s brilliant... but couldn‘t be more different than the French Trilogy.... I loved it , would highly recommend 👍🏻❤️ 1y
Birdsong28 @Cathythoughts Thanks 😘📚📖 1y
CarolynM This has been on my TBR for years, I even have a copy on the shelf, but I've always shied away from actually reading it. I think I need to be brave and just read it. (edited) 1y
LeeRHarry Loved this one too - needed heaps of tissues!! 1y
BarbaraBB Great review. It was a five star read for me too‘ 1y
Centique Great review Cathy! I agree completely - this is one of my all time favourites 😍 1y

Halfway point ... such an absorbing story .. I have to stop every now & then to cry. Jesus.
“ He found the word Jesus in his mouth. He said it again & again beneath his breath. It was part prayer , part profanity. Jesus , Jesus ... this was the worst ; nothing had been like this ... “

Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm it‘s very good ❤️ 1y
erzascarletbookgasm I hope to get to it soonish. Have it on my TBR. 🤞 1y

Centique I‘m a huge fan of Sebastian Faulks (although I‘ve only read 3 so far) He‘s so so good. And yes, he does a heartbreaking scene better than almost anybody! 😰😰😰 1y
TrishB I love a good book cry 😢 but I‘ll try not to read on the bus! 1y
Cathythoughts @Centique this in my 3d. I read The Girl at the Lion D‘or & ENGLEBY.... which ones did you read. ? This one is excellent... but then , they all are 👍🏻❤️ (edited) 1y
Cathythoughts @TrishB This is definitely not a bus book ! It‘s really so good. I‘m nearly finished... but maybe I‘ll wait till you are back from your hols to send it on ... would that be safer ?! (edited) 1y
Centique @Cathythoughts oh good I‘ll stack those! I‘ve read this one, Charlotte Grey and Human Traces. Human Traces was great but sort of petered out at the end IMO. Charlotte Grey is my fave 😊 1y
Cathythoughts @Centique. That‘s interesting that you have read this one & Chatlotte Grey .... I thought nothing could compare to this one .... I have Charlotte Grey waiting on my shelf. I think Birdsong is my favorite book of all time now .... S Faulks is such a powerful writer ❤️ 1y

BarbaraBB That‘s a spotlight book too for me... so good. And sad 😢 1y
Birdsong28 My favourite book as you can tell by my Litsy handle lol! I have 2 physical copies (one was from 2014 to commemorate 100 years to the start of WW1), Audiobook and Kindle and was toying with this version as it's the 25th anniversary 📚📖 1y
TrishB Will be keeping on eye on your posts! 1y

Cathythoughts @Birdsong28 I never put that together about your Litsy handle. !! ❤️ You are a serious fan of this one so !! I listened to S Faulks on you tube speaking about this book & his writing ... he comes across as such a lovely, intelligent man ❤️. I‘m only started , its very good 1y
Cathythoughts @TrishB it‘s off to a great start. 👍🏻❤️ 1y
TrishB Cool 👍🏻💕 1y
Birdsong28 I am a serious fan. I have also seen the play twice. 😂 @Cathythoughts 1y
Cathythoughts @Birdsong28 I bought the play on kindle, by mistake! Meant to get the book. But all‘s well that ends well because I got the actual book & I think that‘s better. I would love to see the play too ... I‘ll keep you posted. I loved The Girl at The Loin DOr & ENGLEBY. Birdsong is starting off as good old fashioned story ... family saga. my favorite kind of book. 1y

1. Birdsong. I've tried it twice and I just hate everything about it, even the things that are okay have been done better by other writers
2. I pretty versatile snackwise but probably crisps
3. Manuscripts Don't Burn - it's letters and and diaries rather than a biography but they're very well edited and annotated
4. @ferskner @CSeydel

CSeydel Woohoo thanks for the tag! I‘m going to have to think about this ... haven‘t read a true biography in ages! 2y

#getmovin #thunderstruck

AC/DC call it the ‘thunder of guns‘ in their song - so I thought this was appropriate. In Birdsong there is also the sound of tunnels being blasted on the front line of the Somme. This is a hard book to read but it really made me feel the horror of the trenches in WW1. I was truly #thunderstruck by it myself 😨

Cinfhen Nice choice, Jo🙌🏻The only WWI book I read that really got to me was 2y
Ruthiella For what ever reason the love story aspect of this book didn‘t quite work for me but the scenes in the trenches were AMAZING! 2y
Cathythoughts Great interpretation of this prompt ❤️🙏🏻 2y

LeeRHarry The trench scenes broke me. 2y
Centique @Cinfhen I‘ve never read that! Stacking 😘 2y
Centique @Ruthiella I remember feeling the same way - it‘s the trench scenes and the miners story that have stayed with me. 2y
Centique @Cathythoughts thanks lovely 😘 2y
TrishB Another book that‘s always been on my horizon but haven‘t got to yet! 2y
Centique @LeeRHarry it‘s shattering isn‘t it? 😨😨😨 2y
Centique @TrishB it is a chunkster but I love his writing. 2y
TrishB Definitely need to get to! 2y
eanderson Nice pick! May have to check this book out! 2y

Pickpick

Is there a crib-sheet for writing LitFic love affairs (this one was formulaic enough)? I can't be flippant about the war chapters, though: they are harrowing, brutal and shocking but not gratuitously so. I'm glad I picked the audiobook for my cardio workout: I couldn't have sat calmly and turned the pages. It's a pity that the framing episodes - the romance and the abrupt cut to the late 70s - aren't up to the same standard as the main story. 4⭐
