Normally I bounce off sci fi with heavy philosophical components but I really enjoyed this one. I think it's because of the main character Ellie. Because this was written in the 80s I did find it a little odd when I encountered the mix of old and new tech. Like, they had holographic projections/images and yet they used magnetic tape recording devices and fax machines.

I know we got the numbers early this month but I'm still celebrating Happy #BookSpin Day today because the second will always be my fave. I'm still working on my backlog but I'm excited to eventually get to these two.

I haven‘t posted on Litsy in a hot minute, but here‘s some goodies from an #indiebookstore trip!

@Nerdfins and I took a road trip yesterday to visit the Book Village in Hobart, NY with a bonus trip to the Green Toad bookstore in Oneonta. Lots of scenic driving, books, goodies, and a couple dogs hanging out in the shops! 📖📚🍁🍂

Readers of the book will not find the same sympathy for faith that was exhibited in the movie. It's a good story. Sagan's writing shows a definite ivory tower disconnection with what passes for believable social situations. If you didn't enjoy the movie, you may be interested in the atheistic theme presented in the book. If you did enjoy the movie, you should read the book to hear what Sagan was really trying to say.

This is strange. For most of the book, I was hovering around a so-so rating. However, Sagan writes such effective science-fiction, that it often read like nonfiction. This is one of the few books that digs in deeper into your psyche, long after you‘ve finished reading it. The question of whether or not we are alone in the universe pales in comparison to the fact that we are NOT alone ON THIS PLANET. Love each other. 201/1,001 #1001Books

This reread was not strictly part of my #spaceracereading project but certainly was inspired by it.

Carl Sagan‘s wish for this book to be made obsolete by history has not come true yet, but there is still hope that it will be.

Interesting to finish rereading this book in the days before and after the landing of Perseverance on Mars. It reinforced my hope for the Mars Sample Return project and a future crewed mission.

Went with a space theme.
Contact has always been one of my favorite movies.
Ender‘s Game is a regular re-read.
The Martian was just...hilarious and awesome.

Somewhere between a pick and a so-so. Had I not picked this up just at the same time as the Covid-19 outbreak, I am positive I would have enjoyed it more and rated it higher. But my mind was elsewhere, and I had trouble focusing on all the details, which there were a lot of. Anyhow, a good book, no doubt - Sagan did a good job explaining all the science behind.

$2 donation to my local zoo, I got to fill a bag full of books - here's what I was able to find!

My biggest take-away from this book published in 1985 (1 year before Challenger blew up) is that we thought we‘d be much more advanced in space travel by the millennium. Read for 2019 Yearly Challenge - Science.

The late great Carl Sagan was an expert at understanding the stars, and also at helping us to find meaning among the complexities of the cosmos. This is a story I will revisit again.

Carl Sagan is my hero.⭐️👽🌜🌍🐛

I rarely ever need time to "digest" a book, but Contact is a book that I can tell will not allow me to ever move on. This is the type of sci-fi story that works it's way into my head and becomes somewhat of obsession. It perfectly marries my love for the logic of science with the almost religious experience of wonder at our vast universe. It's not an easy read but I loved every minute. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Working my way through book two for my #makemereadit TBR. It's a bit dry but it is really interesting and despite totally understanding all the science I appreciate that Sagan actually explains it when needed.

I also really love first contact stories. Had anyone read this? What were your general thoughts?

My advice to myself @ 40 (& EVERYONE) is twofold. 1, instant gratification is overrated. You're going to want to retire comfortably one day, make sure you are saving as much as you can b/c most of that stuff you think you want winds up at the Salvo.
2, your health isn't a given. Eat well and exercise, and make time to do the things you most want, with the people you love before you, or they, can't.

When I was 18 I was introduced to Carl Sagan and became obsessed with The Demon-Haunted World. I went on to read several others and almost two decades later I can't remember much 😬 But I do recall enjoying this one, not so much for characterisation or prose but for the ideas and the story, of that struggle between religion and science.

I clearly need to read more SF.

This book that is built on astronomy and the greater questions is basically an argument for their futility. Be curious, ask questions, and learn, yes but also tend to your heart. Relationships matter, "for small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love." I don't care if it's saccharine, I love this book. #riotgrams #booksinnature

I rewatched this movie tonight; hadn't seen it in a long time. It always makes me cry 😭
I remember reading the book after seeing the movie when it was released in theatres. I was struck by how different some angles of the book were, yet the story remained huge and deep.

What a wonderful book despite of all the technicalities of the first chapters. A classic. A must read for the lovers of scifi. The institute of which Ellie is director, is able to receive signals from Vega, a system 25 light years away. A team of astronomers build a machine to travel towards it. I did want to find out what was going to happen with the Machine. Then I drowned again in an essay on 'pi' and the book ended with something happening in Ellie's personal life, something of which I am not sure what it meant or how it added to the story as a whole. #1001books

I saw the movie Contact and I remember I really liked it so the book must be even better. The last Oracle sounds interesting too. And the travel coloring book looks great! I loved the travel theme you got going ☺️

Belated #FunFridayPhoto--This is one of my favorite movies of all time, which now I feel kinda bad about because I understand that Sagan didn't like the direction that the movie was taking before his death. I read his novel, too, which was intriguing if a little dry; it didn't touch me as much. I think maybe it's because I'm less into science (which is great--go science!) and more into belief and interconnection. Ellie's journey makes it for me.

So what's more likely? That an all-powerful, mysterious god created the universe, and decided not to give any proof of his existence? Or, that he simply doesn't exist at all, and that we created him, so that we wouldn't have to feel so small and alone?

This is an interesting writing style that I don't usually come across! A fiction book that reads like nonfiction, yet still manages to make the story feel alive. I like the book, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Three characters that describe me. Ellie Arroway from Contact is someone I identified with from the first sentence. Arthur Dent because when things get weird you just need tea(coffee). And Switters from Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates. No one has ever drawn him so here is a pic of Tom Robbins who imagined such a great character. I love seeing everyone's picks and wanted to jump on the bandwagon!
