⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I loved this just as much as the first two! I really applaud Becky Chambers for creating 3 books about different sets of characters but doing it so well. I'm so sad it's finished but it was such an awesome ride! The only, only thing I didn't love about this book was the discussion of purpose and the "realization" that nobody in these books believe in a higher being... Very thankful for my faith.

I've been working so hard to rather read than Netflix when I need to relax/escape. This has been a great book for that! What am I going to read next that will compare and have the same effect? 😩😭

Jesstifies I felt the same way! I really enjoyed those books. If you‘re into a little light steampunk fantasy I‘d recommend the Parasol Protectorate. Def fun and a delightful escape. Also has like 5 or so books in the series!! #1 tagged. 2mo

Loved this, loved the series. This book got a bit more criticism than the others because it's short on plot and it's more slice-of-life than the previous books, but I enjoyed it a lot, I'm into that style of book when it's done well. And it was. Becky Chambers is a definite auto-buy for me!

Ruthiella Auto-buy for me too. I thought the third was as good as the first two . I was really surprised in fact where the story went. The first time one of her books made me cry. 4mo
j9brown @Ruthiella It was definitely more emotional than I expected, and hopeful, too. Can't wait for her newest, I think it's out in a week or two! 4mo

This was my least favorite of Becky Chambers‘ Wayfarer series, but that doesn‘t mean I didn‘t absolutely love it! Each book in the Wayfarer series has filled me with tenderness, self-compassion, empathy, and much needed perspective. This installment explores the Exodan fleet through several characters, and the culture and system of the fleet is a fascinating backdrop to the everyday extraordinary of human life wherever you are in time and space.

Centique Yasss! I was the same, it was my least favourite but still so good. And I keep thinking back on this one, so over time it‘s wormed further into my heart 😍 4mo
underground_bks @Centique I just love how deep she goes into Exodan culture! Oh yes, it‘s working its way into my heart with an illegal pinhole drive! 4mo
readordierachel Yes to all of this! She balances the personal elements with the vast world so well. 4mo

Extraordinary and fantastic story of ordinary life (though in space 😉). I have absolutely loved all 3 of Becky Chambers' Wayfarers books. This novel is an exploration of stories - both individual and communal, past and present - of multiple characters, each with their own voice, as they seek their place in the world and search for answers to inescapable questions and struggle, as we all do, to find their own way in an uncertain future.

This was a weird ride: I started off prepared to love it -- and in fact parts of the opening sections made me tear up -- but then it kind of shambles around without a plot, you feel like it's going to peter out completely, and then... Then there's a weird bit where I mostly just went “wait... what?“ and THEN it all begins to pull together. It was enjoyable as an exploration of the Exodan fleet and it comes together in the end, but it's a slow one.

rwmg Yes, I had a similar reaction and just read it as a slice of life in the fleet. 5mo
Squidapus Squidapus heard similar things...less a conference plot more just meandering 5mo

This book was great! I absolutely loved it and it was absolutely what I needed! You get a bunch of different people‘s POVs and their life on the fleet. Some of their stories interweave and it just makes for a great story! If you like sci-fi, space opera stories, this is for you!

I haven‘t read the 2nd book in this series yet, but I‘ll have to give it a go soon!

“From the ground, we stand. From our ships, we live. By the stars, we hope.“

I really don't know what to do with this one. I started it, left it sitting on my desk for a whole month and probably wouldn't have picked it up again if I didn't need it for my thesis. But once I got into it again, it was quite enjoyable. I think the problem for me was the lack of plot. It was more a social study in space than anything else.

The third and final book in Becky Chambers' Wayfarer Series. This one was even more character driven than the first two, if that is even possible. Another emotional rollercoaster with meaningful, believable characters. I caught myself fighting tears a few times. Deep and moving.

I dunno guys, Becky Chambers‘ warm hug sf universe falls somewhere between giving me what #StarTrek is currently failing to deliver (an optimistic vision of the future) and not giving me enough in terms of STORY. I enjoy these books and I‘m here for “cozy sf” lining up beside all the other subgenres but there‘s just something missing for me. Love her worldbuilding, mildly interested in her characters, will read more.

Sometimes a character in a book reminds you of someone. And it's just so spot on....
This one character's father reminds me so much of mine. He's impatient, temperamental, constantly worried about his kids, and takes the time to say "I love you."
I cried over one page of prose and dialogue...

It's always a joy to step back into Becky Chambers' Wayfarers universe. There's something so wholesome and hopeful in the series that at the same time isn't superficial or smarmy. This book didn't have as much forward momentum as the other two, but I didn't mind because I enjoy the world and her generous thoughtful characterization (of human and non-human sapient species -- I love her aliens!). There's some nice casual queerness here too.

readingjedi I absolutely adored this series. I really wish Becky would write some more in the same universe. 8mo

I mean, it's also due to being off antidepressants and anxiety meds after seven years -- it's a m a z i n g how much more I feel things in general (PSA: this is not to say antidepressants are bad; they can help immensely and the trade off was worth it -- but a lot of it is just... Chambers.

First one is still my favorite, but I just love so much the future that Chambers imagines for humanity and her examinations of what makes home, family, and belonging. The Exodus fleet was amazing!

It's hopeful and realistic at the same time.

But this felt more disjointed than the first two, and there doesn't seem to be an overarching plot across the trilogy. Just a whole lot of world building.

I want more cozy sci fi now though! 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

suzisteffen It‘s not a trilogy - just different books set in the same world (with more books to come). Just FYI. 9mo

"We're made out of our ancestors. They're what keep us alive."

stephothebesto I loved the first 2 of the Wayfarers series, especially the 2nd. It was so thoughtful and quiet, in a though provoking way. A very different feel from the ragtag team on a quest vibe of the first, but in a great way. What's the vibe of this one? 9mo
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @stephothebesto Hmm, I found the feel of the first two books to be similarly optimistic and wholesome (but not in a smarmy way) so I'm not sure we've had the same experiences. This one has that same optimism/wholesomeness with more of an existential feeling. I think it's also thought-provoking. I would say the stakes in this one are definitely lower than the first two books. 9mo
stephothebesto Yes! Definitely optimistic and wholesome. Maybe I should have said "introspective" rather than quiet. Either way, based on what you said, I'm definitely looking forward to #3. Thanks! 9mo

This series has some seriously gorgeous covers and some lovely prose to match but if I make it 200 pages into a book and I can‘t tell you what the driving plot is then it‘s a hard no from me. I tried so hard for so long because I really liked the previous book but I just can‘t with this one.

Could easily have read this #Netgalley book as a stand alone but in this case being a geek completist meant I got to experience the full Wayfarers trilogy. And I absolutely loved every one! The setting is so complete, so rich, so conceivably possible, so dang imaginative without being far fetched or alienating. The characters are so well constructed/written, so emotionally nuanced. If Vols. 1 & 2 covered belonging, family, selfhood, home ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi Cont... Vol. 3 does all that with an added dash of existential angst. Chambers imbues everything with such emotional depth and warmth as well as joy, hope & redemption that I can't help but think there's hope for humanity yet. 10mo
