4.7⭐️ it‘s Joe Abercrombie… Of course I love it. Here we have an underdog thrown into this vishous and brutal world, full of vikings and pirates. And as always, it is excellently written. My only issue is that they were so many holes in the story, that it felt incomplete. I know this is a trilogy, but I felt like it needed just a little bit more. And the ending, in my opinion, was very anti-climatic.
4✨ This was really good! Yarvi just wants to take his ministers test when his father and brother suddenly die. Feeling like half a man because of his weak hand he comes to the throne. I suspected the first betrayal, but there was a few reveals that I did not expect. I loved the adventure and the unlikely friends. There were sad moments, shocking moments, and it all tied nicely together. #FableBR

@Roary47 & myself figured if you‘re going to do one Fable Bookclub you might as well do two. Welcome to the Wyvern Scrolls, where we are taking on some epic fantasy series. We‘ll be starting with the Shattered Sea trilogy. July 1 we will begin the first book, Half a King. Join us through the link https://fable.co/club/the-wyvern-scrolls-with-crystal-pilcher-178259080199

(2014) Mixed feelings. The betrayal-and-revenge plot here is pretty well-worn, and the "slavery builds strength and character" trope needs to be retired ASAP. Points for the final twist being not the one I expected, but removed again for depending on implausible coincidence. OTOH, Abercrombie writes this kind of thing really well: pacing and characters are engaging, and goodness help me I'm looking forward to the next.

Picks for the @CBee 's #readyourkindle .
I'm going to try Half a King and Secondborn. The "Living Dead" anthology is tempting but a little too thick, especially paired with the Abercrombie.
This is a #bookstore appreciation post! I‘m so excited that my small hometown finally got a bookstore! If you‘re ever in Two Rivers #Wisconsin please support this small business. And follow them on insta!
Half a King was very entertaining! The story was well-written. The main character, Yarvi, can be a little annoying though. It‘s based around old Viking culture, which I liked, but the book never outright says that.
🎧 “I like my friends smiling & my enemies dead.”
Any book that can squeeze multiple fart mentions into a book is probably my kind of book. Respect.
The first 40% of the book is sort of slow. Around halfway I was hooked and on the edge of my seat biting my fingernails until the end.
Book 1 of 3.

It's the 30th March, I have picked this up numerous times during the month but still only at 15%
It has the potential to be a great read, I just don't think I'm in the right mood to read fantasy at the moment.
So its not a complete DNF, more like I'll get back to it
I'm torn on this one - it took me a long time to get through, and overall it was good, but the ending ruined it for me. I'm not sure if I'm going to read the other books in the series.
This is the kind of YA writing I can get behind! The pacing was fast and engaging, I just wanted to keep reading, the characters were gnarly and nasty. The MC pulled me in, a Royal son with a stump for a hand that is ridiculed by his own family. That‘s a change of storytelling. Also PEOPLE DIED!!! YA books never kill people it‘s such a common theme that frustrates me. Ugh this was just so fun.
Started this one last night and so far I am enjoying it. I have the trilogy so I figured a small break in my WOT reading will be needed so I don‘t burn my self out on the huge series. This trilogy is a lot smaller and I‘m sure I‘ll get through it in the next few days. This is also my first time reading Abercrombie and so far I am impressed!
FIRST NOMINEE FOR WORST SENTENCE READ IN 2020!
Check out the book review of Half a King, my first Joe Abercrombie read. The first book in the Shattered Sea trilogy, an epic fantasy series.

Starting this trilogy my dad got me for my birthday. Also, enjoying my new slip cover to help protect my books when I throw them in my purse/ bookbag/ backseat.
Day 23: #primarycolors #colormepretty
Another day I have been patiently waiting for, I love when a series uses a theme to their color choices, I‘m sure this wasn‘t the intention for this series but for someone like me who loves color theory I can‘t help but hope someone thought “primary colors for the win” haha also still have not read this series yet. I need to stop visiting the library and read what I own haha
You‘re doing well,‘ Yarvi‘s uncle whispered in his ear.
‘I am walking.‘
‘You are walking like a king.‘
‘I am a king and I am walking. How could it be otherwise?‘
This might just be Squidapus' favorite Abercrombie book now. I could barely pull his tentacles off this tale of a fallen viking prince seeking revenge. This is Abercrombie's greyest book to date; none are all good or bad. He does an amazing job with keeping things grim without stepping into overbearing. Yarvi is a great character who is put into a horrible situation and has reactions you can understand even if it hurts seeing him harden himself.
Overall I liked this book. It was action packed with interesting twists and turns along the way. I will be reading the rest of the series.
This book has been rather interesting so far. After three Brandon Sanderson books in three months I keep expecting extensive details. It's been a bit of a switch going back to a normal size fantasy novel. The kids are finally in bed and I am ready for my #wineandbook 😍 #ReadingResolutions @Jess7
One of my #ReadingResolutions this year is to read all the books I actually own. I love finding book hauls at the used book store but my unread pile is getting out of control. I have 68 unread books on my shelves 😳 Half a King is up first. @Jess7
OMG SO GOOD. Normally I can tell what's gonna happen, but all I can say is that I did't see the many twist in this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.
Really excited to start reading this book. I have heard so many great things about it.

It's official -- Joe Abercrombie can do no wrong in my book! And John Keating's narration makes this story that much more authentic. With Abercrombie's signature dark humor and wit and the action-packed twists and turns, you're guaranteed to root for Yarvi and his band of misfits. Another ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for LordGrimdark.
This is the only Joe Abercrombie I've read, although I have another on my TBR shelf. I thought it was a great fantasy novel, with an unusual sort of king. #royals #lyricalapril
Not the best, and not the worst. I'd say it's about half a story though.
A twelve hour shift at the library today - exhausted it so glad to be home to finish an excellent book and snuggle my reading buddy
A very good and fun read. I was surprising how fast this went by. It's a mix of Game of Thrones, Vikings, and the video game Skyrim. Trust me, you'll get it. It's really good!
"Do you blame me?"
"No, it's so much better when you do it yourself."
The pages start to turn like water over the rails of a boat. Faster and faster until nearly half full...
I laughed like a juvenile at this...
"That you're passed around my family like a feast-day cup."
"On feast-day, everyone's happy to get the cup."
When I bought this from Goodwill of Florida on eBay, I thought it was a paperback edition. I didn't realize it was a hardcover, first U.S. Edition. For $6.05, I'll keep hitting eBay for books! Can't wait to dig in, comes highly recommended from... EVERYONE
What a great adventure this book was. All of the characters came off the page, in a subtle way, but one the reverberates after the last page has been read. Yarvi as an MC was an almost instantaneous hook for me. The author so easily and, dare I say, flawlessly weaves a tale that's wonderfully told.
"You may need two hands to fight someone. But only one to stab them in the back"
I really like Joe Abercrombie and I really liked Half a King, the first book in a YA trilogy. It was different to what I was expecting - it's not as packed full of witty banter as his other works - but Yarvi is a brilliant protagonist and there are some genuine surprises in this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
He had come full circle. But he had left a boy, and returned a man.
