Love, Hate & Other Filters
Love, Hate & Other Filters | Samira Ahmed
First love, first heartbreak, first brush with prejudice . . . A romantic, searing and relevant debut about Islamophobia and how it affects the normal life of a teenage girl. "I don't want something . . . expected. I want to go to film school and be the first Indian American to win an Oscar, and then I can meet the One and fall in big, heart-bursting love, and we'll travel the world, my camera ready to capture our adventures." My cheeks flush; I know I'm blushing, but I can't bring myself to shut up. "Oh, my God. I want my future life to be a cheesy romantic comedy." He shakes his head. "No," he says. "You want it to be an epic." Maya Aziz dreams of being a film maker in New York. Her family have other ideas. They want her to be a dutiful daughter who wears gold jewellery and high heels and trains to be a doctor. But jewellery and heels are so uncomfortable... She's also caught between the guy she SHOULD like and the guy she DOES like. But she doesn't want to let Kareem down and things with Phil would never work out anyway. Would they? Then a suicide bomber who shares her last name strikes in a city hundreds of miles away and everything changes . . .

#2023Book30
Despite this being a YA romance, I liked the interactions between the main character and her family and her best friend way more than the relationship between the main character and her crush. But I did like that the ending was somewhat open instead of perfectly wrapped up and unrealistic.

I largely enjoyed this story of a Muslim Indian American teen with a filmmaking dream trying to navigate her love life (similar to Netflix Never Have I Ever feel), but then felt like I got tonal whiplash when the focus shifted to Maya's experiences with Islamophobia. Things got really rough for her on a lot of levels near the end, but the end felt like it belonged back with the first lighthearted section. I wanted more emotional payoff.

It took a while for me to get into this one, but I ended up really liking it. The plot didn‘t get going till almost halfway through the book, but after that I got sucked in and didn‘t want to put it down. Maya is an Indian American Muslim who loves filming her life. Her hometown Batavia has never been anything less than excepting of her heritage and belief, but when a terrorist attack strikes and a Muslim is the suspected bomber, things start ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️ turning upside down for Maya. As hate crimes start effecting her life, her parents become less and less excepting of her dream of becoming a director. 5⭐️ 3y

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this. I loved the dreams Maya had and her trying to be proactive to achieve them. I liked the romance in this book. I did not like how controlling her family was, but at the same time I can see it being a culture thing, but still I wasn‘t a fan of that. Definitely a fast read.

Its Maya's senior year and her biggest worry is telling her parents that she has been accepted in a school farther away, until there is a terrorist attack on US soil. After the attack, Maya deals with the hatred of being Muslim in the United States and her parents fear.

I really liked the cultural aspects of this book. There were some really interesting things that I felt like I learned while reading and the characters were fun. I felt like it was a bit disjointed and slow in parts and very predictable. It‘s a good quick read for a YA audience, but I think it could have been done better and brought together better.

Maya is a h.s.senior; she's also an American Indian & Muslim. Her parents came to the U.S. from India. Maya is torn between being the daughter her parents want & expect her to be & her own dreams - go to NYU to study film and to date a h.s. non-native Muslim. Interspersed in the story are snippets of an event outside anyone's control - a terrorist attack that leads to hate crimes directed toward Maya and her parents.

DROP EVERYTHING AND READ THIS BOOK!!!

A young American born girl, who is also Indian Muslim, must fight bigotry and her overprotective parents to live her dream - to go to NYU and study film.

Maya frets over young love while an abused skinhead prepares a terrorist attack which propels more hatred and attacks on her family.

Being a mom of a teen, I can understand the lengths Maya's parents make to keep her safe .

It is just an amazing book.

I don‘t know if I‘m just not in the mood for YA. This hovered between a pick and a so-so. Interesting subject matter, didn‘t resolve in a cheesy way, believable family dynamic, but I also didn‘t much care what happened. It could just be me though.

(I figured out the answer to my earlier question though! Within the book click “go to” and choose “cover” rather than a chapter.)

readingjedi @eraderneely Just looked on mine & you have the choice of views - grid or less. Grid gives you the covers, 6 to a pages. I'm a fellow Luddite when it comes to anything made after 1995! 😂 5y
Leniverse If you mean show the cover on the lock screen, then no. You only get ads for Kindle Unlimited, usually thrillers or romances. I hide the screen from view whenever I open my Kindle, lest someone see it and think I am reading "Marines in Love: War never prepared them for this". ? 5y

SO GOOD. Definitely a book everyone needs to read. Bigotry, racism, and Islamphobia is not gone from America, unfortunately. With today‘s political leadership especially, it is alive even more so, and thus the evermore stronger need for us resist and stand up for what is Right, Pure, and Just.

#lovehateandotherfilters #lfof #LITSYBUDDYREAD

Jennifer3 I am working to catch up today! @Jess7 thank you for allowing me to be part of this group this year! It has enriched my reading life!!! 5y
RaimeyGallant I think the title is brilliant, and I don't think I mentioned that in the first discussion. (edited) 5y
RaimeyGallant I read this some time ago, but from what I remember, I was a little disappointed in the guy saves girl aspect of the ending. This said, I liked that the last chapter was a realistic resolution to the romance. 5y
See All 9 Comments
Currey @RaimeyGallant I agree with you about the title. Maya is such a typical American young woman, really more consumed with peer pressure, crushes and exercising adult freedoms slightly before she is ready for them. The title somehow captures the political time and time of life 5y
mrp27 I'm really torn about this one. I liked it enough but it just didn't hit the mark for me. I liked Maya and was annoyed by her at the same time. Second half of the book was definitely less fluffy from the first half. 5y
theokiereader I remember someone saying last time that they were disappointed in the book because they wanted to have more insight into what it‘s like to be a Muslim in America. However, I think that was the entire point of the book— Maya didn‘t want to be a Muslim in America, she wanted to be an American teenager. Everyone around her wanted to label her as something, whether it be a terrorist, a “good Muslim girl,” or a daughter in need of protecting because.. 5y
theokiereader ...of her heritage. Maya just wanted to be a normal teenager with a boyfriend (and a boyfriend she liked for reasons other than the fact that he was an “acceptable” match). In a world where everyone was labeling her as a Muslim, she just wanted to be Maya. 5y
CoffeeNBooks @mrp27 I agree! That's exactly how I feel about it. I feel like it's more of a surface story, even for YA. I was thinking about what my students would say about it if they read it, and I think they would enjoy it, but would want to know more. 5y
mrp27 @CoffeeNBooks Glad it's just not me! 5y

I just finished this #LitsyBuddyRead. I liked the premise of the story, but felt like it wasn't as well-developed as it could have been. Maya is a Muslim-American who has to deal with the cultural expectations of her parents, who came to America from India. Maya wants to choose who she dates, where she goes to college, & her career path. Her parents don't agree. Unfortunately, she also has to deal with racism directed at her & her family. @Jess7

LitsyBuddyRead How is everyone enjoying the book so far? 5y
CoffeeNBooks I like it so far, and it's interesting to see how Maya navigates the differences between what she wants in life vs. what her parents want for her. 5y
britt_brooke I finished this a couple of days ago and wasn‘t a fan of the style, but I did like the story. In the first portion, I really liked the relationship between Maya and her aunt. She needed an ally and I appreciate that Ahmed made it a strong female relative who defied cultural expectations. I like Kareem‘s role, too. How are you liking it so far @Jess7 ? 5y
See All 13 Comments
Currey I enjoyed the book for the Young Adult tensions between Maya and her parents and her sweet and simple take on crushes. I felt that Maya‘s relationship with her aunt gave a nice window into what a woman could be in the world. However, up to Chapter 11, it is missing some of the things I was hoping for in a book about Muslims living in the US. To Maya, it isn‘t about how to practice her religion but how to work around her parents. 5y
Jennifer3 I agree with CoffeeNBooks. It is cool to see how Maya handles things. 5y
CoffeeNBooks The only thing that I'm having a hard time with in this section is Maya's relationship with Kareem. Did they really hit it off right away, and he's also super cool with her ending things? Or does he have ulterior motives and he's using her to look good to his parents, in the same way she was sort of using him to look good to her parents? 5y
CoffeeNBooks @britt_brooke @Currey I agree with you both about Maya's relationship with her aunt. I like that she has an ally in her very independent aunt. 5y
RaimeyGallant I finished the book a few months ago. It's hard for me to discuss without spoilers for those who haven't finished it. :) I like that the book did as well as it did. I like that this Muslim story is in the mainstream. I don't love how money is valued by Maya. She seems entitled, but maybe I don't understand an American child's expectations regarding their parents' money, because I live in Canada, where uni is subsidized. 5y
RaimeyGallant Overall, I feel like this book is a step forward for acceptance of diversity and a step backward for gender equality. Can't win 'em all. :) 5y
britt_brooke @RaimeyGallant Interesting thoughts. I can see where you‘re coming from. 5y
britt_brooke @CoffeeNBooks My thoughts on Kareem are that his folks were forcing the relationship in the same way Maya‘s were. They were both bystanders that want to make their parents happy but ultimately both knew they were better as friends; even if Maya was the one who came out and said it first. (edited) 5y
mrp27 I'm enjoying it so far but was expecting something a littler more heavy. I haven't read beyond page 137 but I know there is something big coming. Wonder if the next half will have more depth. I'm reminded a bit of the book When a Dimple Met Rishi. 5y

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Maya, an Indian-American Muslim teenager and aspiring filmmaker, shows us what it‘s like to exist in her overbearing family, and in America, where ignorance often reins supreme. I read this rather quickly because I loved the teen life aspect, but I thought the way the “horrific crime” was presented made the book feel disjointed. I liked the story, but not the style.
