Prince Lestat: The Vampire Chronicles | Anne Rice
A stunning departure, a surprising and compelling returnFrom Anne Rice, perennial best seller, single-handed reinventor of the vampire cosmology--a new, exhilarating novel, a deepening of her vampire mythology, and a chillingly hypnotic mystery-thriller."What can we do but reach for the embrace that must nowcontain both heaven and hell: our doom again and again andagain" --fromThe Vampire LestatRice once again summons up the irresistible spirit-world of the oldest and most powerful forces of the night, invisible beings unleashed on an unsuspecting world able to take blood from humans, in a long-awaited return to the extraordinary world of the Vampire Chronicles and the uniquely seductiveQueen of the Damned("mesmerizing" --San Francisco Chronicle), a long-awaited novel that picks up whereThe Vampire Lestat("brilliantits undead characters are utterly alive" --New York Times) left off more than a quarter of a century ago to create an extraordinary new world of spirits and forces--the characters, legend, and lore of all the Vampire Chronicles. The novel opens with the vampire world in crisisvampires have been proliferating out of control; burnings have commenced all over the world, huge massacres similar to those carried out by Akasha inThe Queen of the DamnedOld vampires, roused from slumber in the earth are doing the bidding of a Voice commanding that they indiscriminately burn vampire-mavericks in cities from Paris and Mumbai to Hong Kong, Kyoto, and San Francisco. As the novel moves from present-day New York and the West Coast to ancient Egypt, fourth century Carthage, 14th-century Rome, the Venice of the Renaissance, the worlds and beings of all the Vampire Chronicles-Louis de Pointe du Lac; the eternally young Armand, whose face is that of a Boticelli angel; Mekare and Maharet, Pandora and Flavius; David Talbot, vampire and ultimate fixer from the secret Talamasca; and Marius, the true Child of the Millennia; along with all the other new seductive, supernatural creatures-come together in this large, luxuriant, fiercely ambitious novel to ultimately rise up and seek out who-or what-the Voice is, and to discover the secret of what it desires and whyAnd, at the book's center, the seemingly absent, curiously missing hero-wanderer, the dazzling, dangerous rebel-outlaw--the great hope of the Undead, the dazzling Prince Lestat

Reason for reading: I‘ve been an Anne Rice fan since I was 17 (that‘s appx 500 years for anyone counting; just kidding…I‘m not a gorgeous or angsty immortal vampire being—or am I?).

The good: Lestat is the same old Brat Prince he ever was, so if you‘re into that…

The bad: 300 pgs too long, way too much talking.

Conclusion: I didn‘t hate this book but I did a mini groan every time I picked it up & I was so happy to be done with it.

This odd chronicle didn‘t work for me until fully 50% through. And even then, it fell into the trap of too many characters and voices and too little plot convergence. My reading life changed forever after Interview, but this is a weak entry in the series.

PRINCE LESTAT has such a low Litsy rating that I went in with tons of trepidation and was all the more delighted when I loved the hell out of it. Rice takes a series of deep dives into characters who floated along the periphery of the main cast‘s stories. Many of them never even got names before. Now we know who they are, what they want, and how they react to this current crisis. It‘s exactly my jam. I‘m so glad I read it ahead of schedule.

Angeles I always take book ratings with a grain of salt, because I often find I disagree with the majority opinion about lots of books. I have come to believe that when a lot of people post they love/hate a particular book, most folks who disagree feel they should not post their opinion. 3y
xicanti @Angeles when a book‘s part of a long-running series, though, I‘ve gotta assume the people who pick it up have some investment in and fondness for the material. That gives their opinion a bit more weight with me, especially since I‘ve had a few disappointments of my own with Rice‘s work. 3y
Angeles That is true, I had not thought about it 3y

I planned to leave PRINCE LESTAT on La TBR until I finished my slow-ass Vampire Chronicles reread, but I‘m in the mood for some Anne Rice I‘ve never read before, and hey, I‘ve got an obvious craving-buster on hand. And I mean, if I still remember THE TALE OF THE BODY THIEF super well sixteen years after I last read it, it‘s not like I‘ve gotta worry about feeling lost.

The Vampire Chronicles is one of my favorite series. I read the first four books several times. It pains me to say this, but this book was disappointing. It was slow and didn‘t live up to the great storytelling of this series. I only stuck it out because I love the series and was hoping it would get better. ⭐️⭐️

I discovered this series in high school and fell in love. Rice stayed an auto buy author for me for years, even after her later books became less enjoyable. I was curious about revisiting Lestat and crew but after only a few pages I really wished I had stayed far away with my fond memories. Poorly written and pretty much nothing happens for most of the book except for too many minor characters reverentially referencing past books and navel gazing.

LeslieO Sad to hear. I loved the first two books. And The Witching Hour. 5y

It's been a good dozen years or so since I plowed through the original Vampire Chronicles, so it was kind of fun to revisit Anne Rice. I'd forgotten that she writes in vignettes with every subsection focusing on a separate entity none of which seem related at first but are pulled together later. Interweaving those individual character stories is what makes it interesting, and I was more than happy to see Lestat again.

I've been a fan of the Vampire Chronicles since I was 15 or so. I wasn't very excited for a continuation after Blood Canticle, honestly. It wasn't the greatest ending, but it was an ending. This book felt like another ending, but in a less satisfying package. It just felt like a pale shadow of the stories that came before. The plot was okay. I dislike the way characters were handled or just left out. Some of the new characters seemed pointless

Reuniting with long lost fictional characters. Decades ago I devoured everything written by Anne Rice until either Memnoch the Devil or Servant of the Bones. Burned out I stopped reading any of her books. With a renewed interest I spontaneously bought Prince Lestat and 2-ish hours later I can not put this book down.

TricksyTails Same! I need to get back into her books again. She was one of my faves! 7y
SconsinBookyBadger @TricksyTails I‘ll be attempting re-reading of her books here and there, plus those I hadn‘t read yet among the pile of books I‘ve been stacking up on. What was her last book you had read? (edited) 7y
TricksyTails I actually started a reread of her books a couple of years ago and fell off the wagon when I got to the Beauty series. Just life got in the way. Originally, I think I stopped reading her books right before Christ the Lord. Oh. I also tried Wolf Gift when it came out but couldn‘t get into it. Are you picking books randomly for your reread? 7y
SconsinBookyBadger @TricksyTails I‘m thinking of beginning with the three early Vampire Chronicles books in order, then maybe randomly picking through her other books. 7y

Finished this last night. Felt like it took forever to read. I love Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, but this one just didn't do it for me. It felt like she had all these minor characters, even less than minor characters, so she threw them in with the big dogs and wrote a book. Because the chapters are broken down into different characters it feels chopped up. I had a hard time keeping my attention. (Continued in comments)

OrangeMooseReads I would finally get interested and the chapter would end and it would go to a different character and be written in a different tense. The Lestat chapters were first person, the other chapters were second and third, it got annoying. Not only did it feel like she was just dragging out minor character she apparently got tired of old major characters. This installment of the VC was just so-so for me. Perhaps the next one makes up for it. (edited) 7y

It was not as awesome a continuation of the Vampire Chronicles as I was hoping. Two thirds of the book were mostly devoted to catching up on characters from previous books and introducing new characters instead of developing the plot, which was interesting but relegated to the end. The characters also seemed overdramatic. Or maybe it's just been a while since I visited these characters. Not terrible, but not what I was expecting.
