Shade
Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents | Pete Souza
31 posts | 31 read | 19 to read
From Pete Souza, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Obama: An Intimate Portrait, comes a powerful tribute to a bygone era of integrity in politics. As Chief Official White House Photographer, Pete Souza spent more time alongside President Barack Obama than almost anyone else. His years photographing the President gave him an intimate behind-the-scenes view of the unique gravity of the Office of the Presidency--and the tremendous responsibility that comes with it. Now, as a concerned citizen observing the Trump administration, he is standing up and speaking out. Shade is a portrait in Presidential contrasts, telling the tale of the Obama and Trump administrations through a series of visual juxtapositions. Here, more than one hundred of Souza's unforgettable images of President Obama deliver new power and meaning when framed by the tweets, news headlines, and quotes that defined the first 500 days of the Trump White House. What began with Souza's Instagram posts soon after President Trump's inauguration in January 2017 has become a potent commentary on the state of the Presidency, and our country. Some call this "throwing shade." Souza calls it telling the truth. In Shade, Souza's photographs are more than a rejoinder to the chaos, abuses of power, and destructive policies that now define our nation's highest office. They are a reminder of a President we could believe in, and a courageous defense of American values.

A most amazing book that brought me to tears. I probably could not have read it when it was first published—in 2018. This book features tweets by former US president Trump on the left pages, followed on the right pages with striking photos of former president Obama by the author, White House photographer Pete Sousa. It provides a stark contrast between the two men, not without snark (or call it shade) from Sousa. Just beautiful in so many ways.

Seriously. Souza‘s photographs are incredible, and the juxtaposition of the Obama Presidency and 45‘s Tweetfests is as stark as ever. It‘s going to be really nice to have decency back in the White House. #shade #ataleoftwopresidents #petesouza #barackobama #44 #45 #whitehousephotographer

Not #shade but shadows! I took this picture in Kensington Gardens this spring. It was a little too windy to read or to sit on the bench for long. #LetsTravelJuly

Gotta love #bookmail!

The items in the bottom half of the picture are a bday present from a non-Litten friend, which I opened several days early since I‘ll be out of town on my actual bday. So excited about the books!

I‘ve also gotten birthday cards from several lovely Littens over the past couple weeks. (Yes, I got them!) You guys are awesome 😊 @Jas16 @BookwormAHN @Kdgordon88 @Lovesbooks87

1. Spending the night with my grandparents. My grandfather would tell me stories about his childhood, which was 1901-1919. I loved those stories of trains, small town living, and family.
2. One brother. We don‘t talk.
3. About 18 months ago.
4. Shade, by Pete Souza. Comparative “lit” of 45 v.44
5. Consider yourself tagged if you‘ve read this far. #wonderouswednesday

I thought this was an interesting look at the Obama White House. Because the pictures are juxtaposed to throw “shade” at something Trump said or did - I found the compilation of the things the Trump Administration has done in two years - overwhelmingly sad and jarring when put all together in this format:

This book is a comparison of news articles/tweets from Trump‘s presidency with photos from Obama‘s presidency. What we have vs. what we had. Some of it is so ridiculous it made me laugh and some is so serious it made me sad. Quite an interesting comparison. And I love Pete Souza‘s photos ❤️

Well it wasn‘t quite the funny read I thought it would be, but it‘s a great way to sum up the beginning of one Presidency and how strikingly different it was and is from the one before....through some surreal juxtaposition between Tweets and photos.

This short short book I read in an hour and I am a slow reader. It compiled many of Presidents Trump‘s tweet and news articles about his presidency and in direct response provides a tweeted photograph of President Obama‘s years in the White House. I lol‘d and I felt at both angry and sad. If you want a quick totally partisan read, this is for you.

Some people call it throwing shade. Pete Souza calls it telling the truth (I'm with Pete). Sometimes funny, more often infuriating, this is a comparison of the first 500 days of presidencies 44 and 45. I hope our country (and world) survive so we might see progress (again) with a 46th.

I loved this book! Both subtle and brilliant, this is probably in my top 5 favorites for the year ❤️. It made me laugh out loud and on occasion, tear up a little bit. I could have sat down and read it all in one sitting but I split it up over four nights just trying to make it last longer! Sigh...

kstadt929 I haven‘t heard of this one! It sounds great! Thanks for sharing and adding more to my TBR 😋 6y
TheHeartlandBookFairy @kstadt929 , I hadn't either! I was in my local bookstore using gift certificates and purchasing Michelle Obama's book, becoming. They had a special deal when you bought that book you could get one of several others at half price. This one came highly recommended and it certainly did not disappoint me! 6y

In 2016 for Christmas my very red republican brother gave me Hillary stuff, including Hillary TP, a Hillary dog chew toy, and a few other things. I did get a Hillary Funko Pop too though, which I kept.

This year he‘s getting Shade.

I chuckled, I rolled my eyes, I was entertained, I marveled at Souza‘s eye and his photographic expertise. He‘s an excellent storyteller in his medium.

Although it‘s not really a book one sits down to read so much as it‘s perfect for a coffee table, it was still an enjoyable read from start to finish. (I‘ve been in a reading rut for almost three weeks so this was a fun way to try to get my groove back. 🤞🏻🤞🏻)
