This book was like a long walk in a new neighborhood on a gorgeous day. No particular destination in mind, but everywhere you looked there was something new to see and explore. Most essays were short, but a few covered a couple pages. Topics ranged from delight in reading poetry, to a good cup of coffee, to greeting strangers, to gardening, and just being alive and able to write about daily delights. Serious or light, these essays were delightful.

Aimeesue Sounds lovely! 4w
SW-T @Aimeesue Yes, it was. An unexpected surprise 😊 4w

So of course after reading this I start thinking about public statues. And I feel the need to find Osman‘s book and read it for myself. This is why my TBR is huge 😁

Just the best book I've read in a long time (and also my favorite bookish tshirt). The Book of Delights is a series of essays Gay wrote over the course of a year while trying to reflect on something that delighted him daily, and it is sheer perfection. The delights move from the mundane to the sublime and even into the absurd. I needed this book in my life and I think that you (whoever you are) do too.

WanderingBookaneer It is lovely. I usually enjoy prose written by poets. 2mo

For a year, poet Ross Gay wrote a short essay on something that delighted him each day. The Book of Delights is a delight to read, that‘s no surprise, but so many of the delights are surprising ones and every single one is poetry and every single one is contagious.

A few weeks ago I had the great joy of talking to Ross Gay about this book. Ross‘s poetry transformed my own work and the way I look at the world. (Even if you don‘t know him you may have seen his viral poem about Eric Garner, “A Small Needful Fact.”) For this book, he tried to write a small essay about delight every day for a year, and what results is sweet but not sugary, and challenging in quiet and unexpected ways.

Whew! I had an awesome, whirlwind trip to Nashville today for my birthday! 🎂📚🎉

I got some gluten-free cupcakes at The Wild Muffin, some gluten-free enchiladas at Taco Mamacita down near Music Row, which I hadn‘t been through in years, and topped it off with a visit to Parnassus Books!! We even saw a house my dad lived in while he was in college. (Not pictured)

I‘ll show my book haul soon, but I‘ve already started the tagged book. 😁🎉😁📚

AlaMich If I ever get to Nashville, Parnassus is definitely at the top of my must-see list! 9mo

I don‘t really have space in my schedule to read something I just bought but I figure a book of essays, especially ones about delight, can be shoehorned in in small bursts, right?!

Poet Ross Gay challenged himself to write an essay every day for a year about something he found delight in. From the joys of animal and plant interaction in his garden to his memories of dealing with family and friends to simply something that catches his eye, he finds a lot to delight him, even if it is tempered by consumerism, racism, & other cultural violence. His joy is infectious.

[I received an advanced e-galley from Netgalley.]

I know that I rarely call the people I love by their names. I call them, if it is okay with them, by the name I have given them. I wonder if this means I think of my beloveds as my children. That seems very patronizing. Especially because I mostly don‘t give them money. But, on the other hand, how lovely all my mothers. All my babies.

I just got the sweetest text message from my friend Walt. It read: “I love you breadfruit.”
