Who is this please? Jessica. Jessica Weir. Im sorry, miss, but this was the last number Matthews on his way home. From work. Hes late. He should be home soon. And only the ocean breathing into the silence as if her own chest were rising and falling without fail. As if his heart were still beating. As if nothing in the world had changed. Weve found a car, miss, but theres no sign of a driver. When Jessicas partner disappears into the dark Tasmanian forest, there is of course the mystery of what happened to himthe deserted car, the enigmatic final image recorded on his phone. There is the strange circle of local women, widows of disappeared men, with their edgy fellowship and unhinged theories. And the forest itself: looming hugely over this tiny settlement on the remote tip of the island. But for Jessica there is also the tight community in which she is still a stranger and Matthew was not. What secrets do they know about her own life, that she doesnt. And why do they believe things that should notcannotbe true. For her own sanity, Jessica needs to know two things. Who was Matthew? And whoor whathas he become? Krissy Kneen is the award-winning author of memoirAffectionand fiction: An Uncertain Grace, Steeplechase, Triptych, The Adventures of Holly White and the Incredible Sex Machine, as well as the Thomas Shapcott Award-winning poetry collection Eating My Grandmother. #booked2020
I managed to finish 4 of the 6 prompts for winter - not bad considered I read practically nothing this month.
1. Head/hat covering - A Hundred Suns
2. #Live and Learn - Don‘t Skip out on me (I leaned about amateur boxing!)
3. #covercrush - the Golden Hour
4. Finish in a day - Things My Son Needs to Know About the World

Cinfhen Great job 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼This is your “official” entry for #Booked2020 #FirstQuarterDrawing 🎉📚❤️😁 5y

#wondrouswednesday

1️⃣ I like a variety of genres regardless of season but I do toss in some comfort reads-classics, cozy mysteries & holiday rom-coms.📚

2️⃣ We don‘t have much seasonal variation here so I eat soup all year-round. In cooler weather I do drink more tea & cocoa & crave more comfort food.🍵

3️⃣ It‘s “chilly” this week by Hawaii standards: High: 73 F Low 66 F & blustery with 25 mph winds🧊

4️⃣ Tagging anyone who wants to play! 🤗

Eggs Thanks for playing 👏🏻🥳💗 5y

@Clwojick @StayCurious #MerryReaders #WinterGames 1. Books Read: I have not been keeping track! Perhaps 30-ish! 2. I‘ve actually never set a yearly reading goal 😳 3. First TBR on my list is Ninth House! 4. Fav thing about winter? Fantasy Football playoffs or snowboarding maybe? Honestly I‘m a summer bae all day—winter is much too cold!

Clwojick I agree! I‘m a summer/autumn fan. I detest winter 🥶 5y

#7days7covers #covercrush #day3 This one was pretty much a cover buy, plus the fact it‘s set in Tasmania which is a part of Australia I‘m most wanting to visit. This cover is just gorgeous, another one with an amazing picture of the gloaming. I‘m a sucker for sunset/moonrise pictures🌖Oh, try turning this picture upside down, gives you a different perspective👁👁

Cinfhen Cool!!! I love this cover and the book sounds good 💕 5y
TrishB Lovely 💕 5y

#AyUpAugust #Day15 #Missing Another Australian novel set in the wilds of Tasmania(I‘m kinda obsessed with the island state!)Jessica‘s partner Mathew disappears on his way home one night, leaving behind his car on the side of the highway & his phone with a fuzzy video of some kind of animal taken at the time he goes missing. Then she gets a visit from a group of women talking about missing partners & Tasmanian Tigers. Strange days indeed.

squirrelbrain Another one to stack! ❤️ 5y

Another strangely beautiful Aussie story, this one set in the winter cold of southern Tasmania. Jessica works at a cave system in the national park, living in a cabin on the water with her abusive boyfriend Mathew. Until one night when he doesn‘t come home & the police find his car on the side of the highway empty. Are the women right, was he taken by something evil? #LLB19 #BookWithAPrettyCover #Pop19 #AuthorsFirstAndLastNameSameLetter

#BookMail Pt7 This is another Aussie author & based story, I ordered a few for #AussieApril but since the backup at Booktopia it‘ll have to be #AussieMay instead! This is set in the Tasmanian wilderness, in a small town on the edge of the forest, Jessica‘s partner disappears. A stranger in the community, she‘s suspicious of a circle of women who‘ve also lost their partners but with strange theories of why. Who was Matthew? And what has he become?

Freespirit I'll be interested to hear your review😊 6y
RadicalReader This cover is stunning love it 6y
Lizpixie @Freespirit I can‘t wait to read it #AussieAprilAndMay @RadicalReader it‘s beautiful isn‘t it. I‘d have loved to get it in hardcover but it wasn‘t in that format. I need rotating shelves that I can put all my #stunningcovers on display instead of spines📕📗📘 6y
RadicalReader @Lizpixie rotating shelves is what all bookworms should have to display their books beauty 6y

The atmosphere is as much a part of the story as the characters and with the setting in the woods of #tasmania there was plenty to use. This, the trauma of grief & domestic violence combine to create a #chilling #spooky and #confronting tale from the perspective of a woman who has come close to losing herself. Gritty realism combined with #paranormal to make a compelling tale that is uniquely #Australian and yet will speak to common experiences.

DarcysMom Your review sparked my interest! 6y
wordsofbek @DarcysMom it was a very atmospheric read. Worth the hype I think. Put it this way, I love horror movies and never get freaked out. I read this book in in one night, couldn't put it down and was creeped out by some of it! Takes a bit to freak me, so I consider that exceptional writing! 😀 Let me know how you go if you read it! 6y
DarcysMom I will have to move it up my TBR list! 6y
