The Quintland Sisters
The Quintland Sisters: A Novel | Shelley Wood
In Shelley Woods fiction debut, readers are taken inside the devastating true story of the Dionne Quintuplets, told from the perspective of one young woman who meets them at the moment of their birth. Reluctant midwife Emma Trimpany is just 17 when she assists at the harrowing birth of the Dionne quintuplets: five tiny miracles born to French farmers in hardscrabble Northern Ontario in 1934. Emma cares for them through their perilous first days and when the government decides to remove the babies from their francophone parents, making them wards of the British king, Emma signs on as their nurse. Over 6,000 daily visitors come to ogle the identical Quints playing in their custom-built playground; at the height of the Great Depression, the tourism and advertising dollars pour in. While the rest of the world delights in their sameness, Emma sees each girl as unique: Yvonne, Annette, Ccile, Marie, and milie. With her quirky eye for detail, Emma records every strange twist of events in her private journals. As the fight over custody and revenues turns increasingly explosive, Emma is torn between the fishbowl sanctuary of Quintland and the wider world, now teetering on the brink of war. Steeped in research, The Quintland Sisters is a novel of love, heartache, resilience, and enduring sisterhooda fictional, coming-of-age story bound up in one of the strangest true tales of the past century.

I remember seeing pics of the Dionne Quintuplets over the years and was familiar with the story of their birth. It‘s heartbreaking that they were put on display, but all indications seem that a life with the birth parents wouldn‘t have been ideal. The fictionalized story is okay, but a slow read for me. Not a page-turner! I was especially irritated with the story at one point😠(see spoiler below). Overall a so-so. 2/5👶🏻s

Wife The author implied that the father of the quints raped the main character, a nurse that cared for the girls. I know this is fiction, but he was a real person. The Quints IRL did accuse him of sexual abuse though. 3w
Megabooks I followed this fiction up with the book I‘m tagging, which is nonfiction. I liked the NF a lot more. (edited) 3w
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Wife I didn't know the girls accused him IRL, I need to read more nonfiction about them... But I was definitely bothered by the implications in the book. It was unnecessary and felt inappropriate. Was like she didn't know how to end it, so went for a "shocker". 3w
Megabooks @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego see tagged book above. I thought it was much better than Quintland 3w
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Megabooks I will have to check it out, thanks! 3w

Hmm. Well researched historical fiction in which a fictional narrator shares her life looking after the famous Dionne quintuplets. Whilst sad I really enjoyed the first 90 pc of this novel but found the end frustrating and a little confusing

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Yes, the ending was unnecessary. 4mo

Much of my reading of this book was while sitting on the banks of the Ghost River.

Appropriate, as this story (based on the true Canadian quintuplets) is full of metaphorical ghosts.

The story is told through real news clippings and the diary of a fictional young nurse who attended their birth and cared for them the hospital the Ontario Government built for them.

Two of the Dionne quints are still alive. I must find their autobiography

Megabooks There‘s a nonfiction book coming out in the fall, but I can‘t remember the name right now. I think it‘s this one 🤔 4mo
bookseller_cate @Megabooks Thanks! I will check availability of that one. I also want to see if I can find the TV movie Million Dollar Babies. I think that‘s where I first hear about the Dionnes. 4mo

A historical fiction account of the first set of quintuplets to survive childbirth, written from the perspective of one of their caregivers.

I really wanted to like it. I love the premise. Overall it was fascinating, sad, and a bit redundant. Also, the ending just confused me. It didn't fit & I don't know what we're meant to take away from it.

Curious what the rest of my #lmpbc group thinks. @bookishtrish @FantasyChick @Andrea4 @StayCurious

BulkingBookie I date a girl who's triplet, and that was hard enough 😂 So, how do you place the book on the app scale? So-so? Bail? 4mo
Megabooks I took away from it that you shouldn‘t put your kids on display. Usually I‘ll catch an episode or two of Outdaughtered or Sweet Home Sextuplets but not anymore!! 4mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Megabooks Yes I would agree with that, that was almost too obvious. But I'm more baffled with what we're meant to take away from Emma's story line. She was so naive I wanted to shake her. Then the rape/attack at the end, that made no sense. And finally she ends up with Lewis, only for him to die? I just don't know what to make of it all. 🤷‍♀️ 4mo

Well-written with interesting themes and relevance to today‘s social media obsessed world. Still I found it tough going - Emma is too short-sighted for me to sit comfortably with her through the story and the treatment of those girls made it a book I could only read in short bursts. So really a pick, but one I didn‘t enjoy?!?

Heartbreaking for MC and quints, not as good as it could be, but an author to watch! Narration of #audiobook great!

If Wood had made Emma just a bit more world-wise, the issues around the quints could‘ve been better highlighted.

The sharks around the girls were out for blood, and I‘d very much like to read some nonfiction about them now. It definitely makes me double down on my decision not to watch the TLC shows about multiples!

Miss Emma Trimpany is the densest character I‘ve ever read. I mean she is as thick as an dictionary. Just quit being such a little ninny and stand up for yourself!!

I hardly ever get this angry with characters, but I‘m legit furious with her.

Tavia Gilbert‘s narration is brilliant, but idk how I‘m going to finish the last hour!

My mom is headed to the doctor for a cortisone injection in her joint. Will update those threads after. 😊😘💜

This is the story about the Dionne quintuplets as told from the point of view of a fictional nurse who is with them the day they are born, and for the next 5 years as the girls live in Quintland on display every day for millions of tourists to see. I‘ve always been fascinated by the quints and this book just made me even more curious about their lives. It‘s a tragedy in its own right. They were deprived normal childhoods and were then abused by ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 Their father once their parents regained custody of them at 9 years old. I took my time reading this so I could enjoy it. I felt I was right there with Emma. I was also surprised at the ending, as I thought it was going to go the predictable route but didn‘t. 5⭐️ Highly recommended! 9mo

Today‘s #bookmail is well suited to the #MoneyCityManiacs prompt. Quintland was built in Northern Ontario in the 1930s to show-off the Dionne quintuplets. At its height, Quintland attracted thousands of visitors a day, and generated major tourism dollars during the Great Depression. It was not a boon for the Dionne quintuplets, however, as they were taken from their parents and made wards of the Crown.

I haven‘t read very many books in an epistolary format. Once I started reading, I immediately understood that it needed to be written like this. Ms. Wood weaves a fictional account that makes it hard to believe it‘s fiction based on fact. The writing style, the way the story flowed, and Emma(one of the nurses) documenting the lives of these girls and the people around them drew me in and kept me reading and wanting to know more.

Before the fame of Jon & Kate Plus 8, there were the Dionne quints. Born in a ramshackle home in Canada, they became famous just by the miracle of their birth. I knew of them, but before this book I didn‘t realize quite what a media sensation they were, not the price they paid for it.

Told via diary entries and letters by a fictional nurse, this was a fascinating and well written read. The book is also sprinkled with actual news articles.
