Silent in the Grave (Original)
Silent in the Grave (Original) | Deanna Raybourn
63 posts | 80 read | 69 to read
"Let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave." These ominous words, slashed from the pages of a book of Psalms, are the last threat that the darling of London society, Sir Edward Grey, receives from his killer. Before he can show them to Nicholas Brisbane, the private inquiry agent he has retained for his protection, Sir Edward collapses and dies at his London home, in the presence of his wife, Julia, and a roomful of dinner guests. Prepared to accept that Edward's death was due to a longstanding physical infirmity, Julia is outraged when Brisbane visits and suggests that Sir Edward has been murdered. It is a reaction she comes to regret when she discovers the damning paper for herself, and realizes the truth. Determined to bring her husband's murderer to justice, Julia engages the enigmatic Brisbane to help her investigate Edward's demise. Dismissing his warnings that the investigation will be difficult, if not impossible, Julia presses forward, following a trail of clues that lead her to even more unpleasant truths, and ever closer to a killer who waits expectantly for her arrival.

At 509 pages this seemed overly long. I liked the mystery but I think it could have been shorter. This was Raybourn's first published book, so maybe she was still finding her style. #AlmostAChunksterChallenge #20in4 @TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65

This was written long before the Veronica Speedwell series. Still, I kept comparing. 😐

Lady Julia lost her husband and a year after his death she starts investigating his possible murder. The private investigator who helps her, or does she help him, is not hard on the eyes and there is chemistry between the two of them.

The plot takes some time to get going, but then it's an interesting ride with a few (nearly unexpected) twists and turns.

This book, a gift from hubby, is really what got me started on historical mysteries. It has the best opening lines of any book I‘ve ever read. The rest of the series is uneven and tailed off at the end. But Raybourn‘s writes wonderful dialogue. This book also led me down the rabbit hole of Amazon pre-orders, author‘s blogs, following authors on FB, etc.

Andrew65 This is one more of the popular series. 4y

This book started out too slow for me, but it had a smashing and tricky five-star ending that I just did not see coming! I had to go back and read a section of the end again once I saw how the clues fit together. Because the conclusion was done so well, I will be reading the next installment of the series immediately.

Fleur, the French countess, was my favorite character. I hope the author expands more upon her.

I should have bailed with this. I need to be better about giving up on books that aren't clicking with me, but this one was a mystery and I wanted to know what happened and I was so mad at the climax that I almost threw the book against the wall.

esurient I wasted valuable reading time during Pride month spending time with a story where the big reveal(s) were a murderously jealous gay character and his victim and lover, the indiscriminately promiscuous manipulative and controlling emotional abuser who knowingly infected at least one person with syphilis. (edited) 5y
esurient And that person was not his wife, the straight heroine, whom he married under false pretenses and the plot treats his decision to keep the hell out of her bed in the effort to prevent infecting her as the best possible option under the circumstances. Nope, instead, he just conspired with a doctor to lay the blame for their infertility on her body. 5y
esurient To give the author her due, she does present the heroine as sympathetic to alternative sexuality and there are some gay secondary characters who are presented positively and the heroine is righteously pissed once she finds out. I still found it badly anvilicious and remain irked at the world in general. 5y

esurient (Sorry, @rretzler, this one turned out to be not my cup of tea.) 5y
rretzler No, I agree - but it is actually the heroine that I don‘t like in the series! Book 1 may portray her in a sympathetically light, but she is a bit of an entitled shrew who does what she wants without thinking of the consequences to anyone else. 5y
esurient @rretzler Ugh, even worse! Yeah, I will not be continuing with this series, but I will look forward to trying that Speedwell series when I lay hands on a copy. 5y

First line Friday (a day early because this is when I have time.)

Best first line EVER. “To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband's dead body is not entirely accurate. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching upon the floor.“

Heroine afraid of hero is not an enjoyable plot element to me. :(

rretzler I was always a bit frustrated with Lady Julia throughout this series. The plotting was decent, but I just wasn‘t crazy about Lady Julia. I did like Nicholas though - he redeemed the series for me. Veronica Speedwell is a better character IMO! 5y
esurient @rretzler Maybe I'll switch to that instead. The author's writing style is not wowing me, but this one was her first published book and I might enjoy her newer characters better. 5y

Interesting. So I definitely didn't love this the way I do Veronica Speedwell and I'm failing to understand why this is classified as a romance really but I loved the murder mystery aspect. I also just really liked Lady Julia and she grows a lot throughout the book. Also, kinda love her dad. I'll fully admit I saw the last big twist coming and soon as it happened, I connected the dots on who the killer was but only like a chapter before.

Slow going (and not just because of its 500+ pages) and not a big fan of the H/h. Also not sure some of the issues/plot points were written appropriately for the time period of the book. I'd give it a 3-3.5. I actually plan to go forward and read the sequel to see if my opinion will improve.

Time for a little mystery and an author who is new to me....I've heard great things about this series! Can't wait to get started! #romantsy

robinb OK, so far I'm not overly wowed by this one...which is a shame since I had heard wonderful things about it. I'm 150 pages in (400+ total), and I'm not connecting to H/h, and the story is moving sooo slowly. I'm normally not a quitter but am giving it a second thought with this one. 😔 7y
robinb OK, I stuck with it and even though it's not going on my list of faves, it did improve as I went along. It was still too slow for my taste, and I still am not totally won over by the H/h, but believe it or not, I'm going to give the sequel a shot and see how it goes. It takes a lot for me to reach my threshold of totally giving up, and I'm not yet there with this series. I'd give this one a 3.5. #romantsy 7y
