Elevator Pitch | Linwood Barclay
58 posts | 38 read | 30 to read
In this chilling new thriller from blockbuster author Linwood Barclay, one too many freak "accidents" force residents in New York to wonder if they're being targeted--and by whom. A freak New York elevator accident kills four people, and reporter Barbara Matheson jumps on the story. But when she realizes one of the victims was her former intern, she's horrified. She shares her grief in her online column, only to receive a menacing--and anonymous--comment in return: "Sorry about your friend. It's often the case that innocents are lost in pursuit of a greater good." Meanwhile, NYPD Detective Jerry Bourque is called to the scene of a grisly murder. Nothing seems to indicate that the murder is connected to the elevator accident, but when a second "accident" occurs the next day, what looked like coincidence quickly becomes more sinister. As the body count rises and Manhattan grinds to a halt, a city must uncover the sinister forces that are making its citizens plummet to their deaths. . . .

I liked this. Some elements of the plot were a little far-fetched, but I was in a mood to roll with them. This was a fast read. I personally did not fear elevators while reading this, or at least no more than usual, but I don‘t hold that against the book blurb 😂

I wasn‘t quite as interested in the political aspects of the book with the mayor, though it was important to the book. I was more interested in Barbara‘s and her daughter‘s lives. The POV did switch around with each chapter. It really ramped up in the last 20% of the book. It was very suspenseful at that point and I didn‘t want to put the book down until I finished! Although it turned out really good, it is not one of my favourites by Barclay

Started out sort of slow, but the suspense and tension grew until I couldn‘t get thru the second half fast enough. There are several different things going on in here, so you need to be patient and take it all in. As @SilversReviews told me, the end is well worth the time it takes to get there. Great fun, this one!

I enjoyed this fine, although it felt like it wandered a bit. There were quite a few subplots (some obvious red herrings) and it did feel a little contrived at times as he tried to resolve all the loose ends. This was my 2nd by this author, and I would probably say I enjoyed the other one (A Noise Downstairs) more.

Q84 I think I'll check it out. Thanks for sharing. 2y

I loved the visceral experience of this terrifying tale. While I‘ve seen others comment that the pacing was slow, I found Elevator Pitch to be captivatingly thrilling from beginning to end with masterfully built terror inducing scenes.

ThriftBooks responded already. I didn‘t specify which book in my message so hopefully they‘ll see that I only received one book from my order so far and will send the correct one. I may read both to see what differences there are between the ARC and published copy. I‘ve never gotten an ARC before so I‘m curious.

I just got part of my order from ThriftBooks. It‘s an ARC someone won from Goodreads. They left the slip of paper in it, too. I‘m not sure how I feel about receiving an uncorrected proof. I don‘t remember it saying that when I ordered it.

Kaylamburson Legally, ARCs cannot be sold. I would ask for a refund. 4y
LiterarySloth @Kaylamburson oh I know. Technically I didn‘t pay for it because I had a free book credit but I‘m still going to let them know so they‘re aware. 4y
Kaylamburson Definitely good to let them know! Hopefully you enjoy the book anyway! 4y
LiterarySloth @Kaylamburson they‘re sending me a new one! This is my first ARC so I may still read it 😂 4y
Kaylamburson Oh, that's wonderful! ARCS ate definitely cool if you've never had the chance to interact with one. Since you're getting the final, could be fun to see what differs! 4y

The writing was bad, but I still wanted to know what was going to happen, so there was definitely something I liked to keep me going. Maybe I just didn‘t like the voice acting? I don‘t know. I don‘t recommend this one unless like me, none of your audiobook holds are available.

Someone is sabotaging NYC elevators, causing death and fear across the city. This is an awesome thriller that doesn‘t shy away from some humor as well (a mayor named Richard Headley). I tore right through this one. This is my third or fourth by Barclay and I‘ve enjoyed them all.

cathysaid Ooooh goody. I'm a sucker for a good crime/mystery/thriller series. 5y

Once I saw it was blurbed by Stephen King & Michael Robotham, how could I refuse?🤷🏻‍♀️When 4 people are killed in an out of control high rise elevator, everyone assumes it‘s bad maintenance, until it happens again. And again. Soon Manhattan has descended into chaos with even 911 calls left unanswered in the city‘s tall buildings. #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-687

2nd last in my #libraryhaul is the new thriller. Four people are on an elevator where ignoring the buttons they push, it goes to the top floor then plummets out of control, killing them. It appears to a random tragedy, until it happens again. And again. It brings Manhattan to its knees, people are terrorized, too scared to work or even live, even 911 calls go unanswered. It sounds terrifying! #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-416

Despite the past two weeks of mostly non-reading, my overall stats aren‘t too bad for September, thanks in large part to listening to audiobooks at work. I had five books I really wanted to read this month, but I didn‘t even get two of them started, so I‘m pretty bummed about that. I changed my work schedule to avoid traffic, but I lost at least 30 minutes of daily reading time. I‘m thinking of changing back as I‘m too tired at night to read. 😭

I can‘t really say much yet, since I have only read a little bit of it so far, but I love Barclay‘s work and this looks like a particularly good one. More later....,........finished reading the book. I liked it, as I do all of Barclays books. Liked the feeling for life in New York and the characters. Captured my feelings about skyscrapers, and about heights in general. I have visited most of the skyscrapers during my 18 years of living in New York
