I picked up this book on a whim and it was an enjoyable read. I wasn‘t sure if this was a supernatural themed thriller or not until the end. Overall, it was a fun read with some good twists and turns. Wraps up nicely in the end.

Here‘s the mass market paperbacks & hardbacks I‘ve gotten recently. They were all on sale! One of the Barnes & Nobles near me had a 20% off on mass market paperbacks, which I‘m a sucker for anyway, so ahh! I have soooo many books plus I‘m constantly getting books from the library.
I pieced together a few things, which is something I am especially loving about Barclay‘s books. Nothing is obvious, but if you pay close attention, playing detective proves to be quite satisfying. I certainly didn‘t figure it all out, and I was especially off on motives, but I still smugly patted myself on the back for what I did get right - haha!

A twisty tale, really enjoyed it. Guessed one of the twists,, but they kept coming at the end.

This was a good, solid thriller. I anticipated some of the twists but that may be due to me reading so many thrillers lately.
No bingos on my November 2021 #BookSpinBingo, and none of the free spaces used 🙀 It was a bit of a slow month, plus I discovered Stardew Valley streamers on Twitch 😅 I might finish Range tonight; if so, I‘ll update the photo.
It took me a few days to get this started, but once I did get into it, it flew by. Some good twists.
3.5 ⭐️
Pauls normal life breaks down after facing a murderer. Missing memories, an old typewriter and messages from the dead send him into a spiraling voyage.
The humor was too dry for my liking but the suspense kept me around. Most of the twist and turns I saw coming especially when it came to a certain female character. I still enjoyed the journey and would love to read more of Barclay‘s work.

This author was recommended to me, but I wasn‘t impressed with this book. I actually saw one of the “big reveals” coming, and I‘m not usually good at that. I‘d like to believe that I‘m becoming more prescient, but know that it‘s much more likely that the twist was just that obvious. 😁 I‘m going to try another one and hope it‘s better!
Has anyone read this one?
Thoughts? 😃
Cecil was spooked by this book, Abby just wanted to know why these people didn‘t get a cheap camera to see what was up with the haunted typewriter. I‘m with Abby. I couldn‘t buy into the supernatural angle, but I‘d definitely give another book by Barclay a shot.
#NewYearWhoDis
As with all Barclay‘s books, this was really good. I loved the idea of the old typewriter and I could hear the sounds it made in my head. It was also quite creepy, at times. It was hard to know what was happening with Paul, and the twists were a surprise to me
Starting another #NewYearWhoDis title recommended by @vivastory
Abby is back to lap cat mode. The growth she had removed a few weeks ago is rapidly returning, so we‘re doing palliative care. She doesn‘t have a lot of energy, but she‘s comfortable and has a good appetite. We‘re going to enjoy what we can while we can.
I've been meaning to read Barclay for several months, especially after all of the positive Litsy reviews. It opens with college professor Paul Davis surviving an attack by one of his colleagues. Several months later, as part of his therapeutic process, he begins writing about the attack & the motivations of the man responsible. In one part of the book he forgets a character's last name & calls them Hitchcock, Barclay clearly signaling his 👇
I love Linwood Barclay. This book was so hard to put down that I read it in 8 hours and I‘m a slow reader. It was a fun suspenseful novel of a bit predictable but I had fun and that‘s the point.
Title of book: A noise downstairs
Genre: Psychological thriller
Author: Linwood Barclay
Date started: September 17th
Date finished: September 29th
Reason why I chose the book: I chose this book because I was at the store and I was looking for something and I came across the book isle when I was looking at the books I saw this book and the title of it grabbed my attention.
The cliffhanger ending chapter 9 gives you a deeper analogy to the plot of the book. Something about the blood on the typewriter gave me a bit of a foreseen thought of the connection it will bring the character Paul to the understanding behind the killings done by his old colleague.
Been harder than usual to get some reading done but so far I am definitely intrigued to continue reading this book. Love the short chapters and that they leave a cliffhanger each chapter to continue reading.
So far it is good. Chapters are short but have you wanting to know what the next chapter will bring. Mondays are busy days for me since I have school deadlines. That limits me on how much I am able to read.
This was SO GOOD. If you‘re looking for a quick thriller definitely check this one out.
It‘s been awhile since I‘ve listened to an audiobook, so here‘s hoping this gets me back on the wagon.
I love linwood barclay though disappointed by the ending this book is full of twists and plots and keeps you turning those pages!
This definitely kept me glued to the pages, but it was one of those thrillers that felt like it went one twist too far to stay somewhat realistic. Still a 4* rating for a book I had trouble putting down.
Fourth book for #20BooksofSummer
Wow! Yes I figured some of it out, but it was a crazy, mind twisting story I could not put down. Paul is trying to figure out if he‘s going crazy and, if not, how could these things be happening.
“Paul wondered whether there was something worse than nightmares and memory loss.
Going batsh*t crazy.”
Barclay does it again! Just brilliant so many twists and turns I just loved it 😁 There is a reason why he's one of my favourite authors and it's the fact that he never fails to write a great psychological thriller.
Chit chit. Chit. Chit chit chit. Ding! 😮
🌟🌟🌟🌟
Oh my goodness! This book was incredible. My first Barclay. I squealed at one point and cried a lot at the end. My excessive knowledge of the human brain only ruined the story a little bit.
So excited to start this 😊 One of my favourite authors and the only book of his I've not read.
A night of reading with a little g&t 📚🍸🧡
Waited so long for this book from the library! The only Linwood Barclay book I've not read. This will be one of my March reads 😊
I wanted a change of pace from all of the non-fiction I have been reading recently & I was not disappointed. I found myself skimming through the middle, but the short chapters make it easy to pick up and set down, & the fast-paced story telling kept me guessing (incorrectly) until the end. I was skeptical at first that this would be your typical who-done-it story, but was delightfully surprised in the end. 3/5 stars.

I cannot say enough about how much I enjoy these quick thrillers. I am starting my tenth book by him this week ~ for twists and entertainment he is tough to beat! Being a Canadian, I am embarrassed to report I only learned of Barclay last year😳🇨🇦
I am a bit conflicted about this book. At times I was on the edge of my seat and at times I found it to be very predictable. I am glad I borrowed from the library rather than purchasing.
Today‘s lunch read!!! Day 11 of shutdown 🥺😏Reading and cleaning have run its course 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️ Outside is cold and the boredom is getting real! More like the noise upstairs!!🤬My neighbors are the worst!🤬
This book is easily one of the best mysteries/thrillers I‘ve ever read! What a twist ending. Multiple twists and turns, actually!

A man survives an attack by a murderer which effected some of his cognition. As he starts to recover he begins hearing the proverbial noise downstairs which begins driving him toward madness. I had this one figured out part way through, but wasn‘t sure how it would get there. A couple of last minute twists proved me right. It was an enjoyable trip.
I have to admit I listened to most of this in one go. However I think that was more based on the fact that I was packing up my entire life and both needed something to entertain and distract me. I was hoping for a far more chilling novel; this lacks in depth and development with too many twists that toward the end turn it into a kind of amusing soap opera where you're waiting for the guy to *surprise* not be dead at all. It entertained.
Kids are asleep. It‘s raining. I can‘t think of a better time to get lost in a great book!
4.5 stars....Could not put this one down! From page one this story had me.
Every time I thought i figured it out something new was thrown in that took me by surprise. This would have been a 5 star rating were it not for the deus ex machina thing towards the end. But other than that, a fun and exciting read!
Loved this one! I thought I had it figured out but I was totally wrong 😂
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Debating on starting this tonight. I know if I start I probably won't be able to stop. 😂
I felt like giving this book up after Paul was killed. The last 30% of the story was a complete mess. I can't say that I enjoyed it as much as I would have liked.
Overall, listening to this audio book was a waste of my time. There were so many issues. The first is that the narrator does a terrible job with the women characters. It's so bad, that it was distracting. Also, the use of potential ghosts in a thriller, is just a lazy plot device. But, the biggest flaw was that it was neither suspenseful nor thrilling. It was utterly predictable. I would skip this one since it adds nothing to the genre.
Reading in bed with the World Series playing on my iPad. Not a die-hard baseball fan, but cheering for the Red Sox. I've been lucky enough to go to three games since I moved here last year. And I'm enjoying this book. It's a little creepy and keeping my attention.
Paul suffers a head injury in traumatic circumstances and later hears his typewriter during the night. Is he crazy? Is someone in his house? Is this a ghost? This mystery builds gradually then increases in speed before ending in a way I never would have guessed. Great mystery! I‘ve never read Barclay before but definitely will again.
