Anna Kar้nine
Anna Kar้nine | Leo Tolstoy
Russie, 1880.

I did it!!! 4 years, 33 hours of listening, 2 versions, but I did it. This is a beast but can see why it‘s a classic. I feel a lot of it went over my head. I started reading but stalled. Started over as an audio and managed the finish.

I‘m not equipped to judge whether or not this is โ€œthe greatest novel ever writtenโ€, as has been alleged. But it did make me think a lot. It covers just about every human emotion in its pages, and many social, religious, and philosophical ideas as well. I‘m glad I read it, but won‘t be rereading it again anytime soon!

Many thanks to @TheBookHippie for hosting the #KareninaWinter buddy read, as I would never, ever have read this on my own.

Completed the Chunkster level for #ChunksterChallenge2025. I‘d give it a pick because it is a story well told (and well translated, if you get the P+V version). I wouldn‘t say it‘s the โ€œgreatest novel of all time,โ€ as some reviews call it. It does provide an interesting historical context of its time. And now I can finally check it off my list. โœ”๏ธ

monalyisha I *loved* this when I read it. But that was over 15 years ago! If I remember correctly, I may have even mentioned Levin in my internet dating profile (something about a โ€œsweaty, lean farmer with metaphysical concernsโ€?). ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿฅต 1mo
Amiable @monalyisha If I were going to pick a sweaty Russian out of the bunch, it would definitely be Levin! ๐Ÿ˜„ And I also loved Kitty. Anna, not so much. I actually felt sorry for Karenin. Stiva and Vronsky were basically Russian frat boys -- ugh. 1mo
CoverToCoverGirl Congratulations! ๐ŸŽ‰ I have attempted this book several times but could never get past the first handful of chapters. 1mo
Amiable @CoverToCoverGirl The fact that the chapters are all pretty short is basically what propelled me through some of the sections, I'm not gonna lie. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ I could read two chapters (i.e. 5 pages) and feel like I'd accomplished something for the day. 1mo
willaful Liking Levin is pretty much all I remember from this book. ๐Ÿ˜‚ 1mo

The first book I‘m tackling this year for the #AllergicToChunksters challenge is Anna Karenina. I‘m reading it for the #KareninaWinter buddy read, hosted by @TheBookHippie and @Librarybelle . I started it in December, and am woefully behind, but loving it.

What will everyone else be starting on? Tagging those who expressed interest, but all are welcome! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I decided to try and tackle The Last Magician again ๐Ÿ™‡โ€โ™€๏ธ I‘m challenging myself to at least a chapter a day (they‘re about 5 pages each). The characters have started growing on me and so far I‘m up to page 173 ๐ŸŽฉ 2mo
mcctrish I read AK with a book club a long time ago and I only finished it because I got so sick I couldn‘t get out of bed ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ BUT I am glad I did. It turned out to be a book I had to finish to appreciate. It will be so good as a buddy read โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธbut once was enough ๐Ÿ˜‰ 2mo
PuddleJumper It's going to be The Lost Hero or Scum Villain Self blah blah blah which are both over 500 pages I think 2mo
See All 64 Comments
mcctrish Also I am undecided about my first chunkster, I‘m down an Elin Hilderbrand rabbit hole, soon finished, and then I will sort myself out 2mo
JenlovesJT47 I started Les Misérables today ? 2mo
dabbe @JenlovesJT47 Same! ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿค— 2mo
Librarybelle I‘m glad you‘re tackling Anna Karenina! @TheBookHippie is doing an amazing job hosting this oneโ€”I just told her I‘d read with her, and a #BuddyRead was born!! ๐Ÿ˜‚ 2mo
JenlovesJT47 @dabbe yay! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป I admit I freaked out at first when my ereader said the first chapter had 105 pages ๐Ÿ˜† but luckily they are broken up into smaller chunks within the chapter. 2mo
dabbe @JenlovesJT47 I'm only reading like 3-5 pages a day and ignoring the chapters ... otherwise my brain will implode. ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿค— 2mo
julieclair @Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I love your plan! 5 pages a day is so doable! 2mo
TheBookHippie @dabbe you have a schedule yes? โ™ฅ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ’™ 2mo
julieclair @mcctrish That‘s quite a story! I hope I can finish it without resorting to your drastic measures! ๐Ÿ˜‚ But that‘s an interesting comment about needing to finish to appreciate it. That‘s motivating. ๐Ÿ‘ 2mo
julieclair @PuddleJumper No matter which one you choose, the other will be waiting in the wings! ๐Ÿ˜‚ 2mo
julieclair @mcctrish No need to rush out of your rabbit hole. You can start in Februaryโ€ฆ or Marchโ€ฆ 2mo
julieclair @JenlovesJT47 and @dabbe Good for you for taking on Les Mis! I was tempted, but realized there was absolutely no way I could read it while also reading Anna Karenina. ๐Ÿคฏ 2mo
julieclair @Librarybelle Hope you didn‘t freak out when I mentioned you were cohosting AK! ๐Ÿ˜‚ For some reason, I thought @TheBookHippie was hosting December, and you were hosting January. But I agree, she is doing a fabulous job (as always). ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฉต๐Ÿ’™ 2mo
JenlovesJT47 I meant to start AK last month but had too much going on. I‘m a month behind so I dunno about jumping in now, but I really want to read this. 2mo
Librarybelle No worries, @julieclair ! 2mo
Gissy I‘m not so afraid of chunksters because last year I read around 8 books with more than 500 pages but always is a commitment๐Ÿ˜ณI will like to read Anna Karelian but I need first to order online my copy. Let‘s see if I can finish it. I am also very interested to read The Miserables and finish The Count of Monte Christo. I will read some books this month that have more than 400 pages but less than 500 pages which are still long books for me๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿฅบ 2mo
Gissy I never know if a big book will be a torture or an adventure, all depends on its context. I finished one that I really suffered with it๐Ÿ˜– 2mo
julieclair @JenlovesJT47 If you really want to read it, maybe you could put AK next in line for whenever you finish Les Mis. 2mo
JenlovesJT47 I could but we‘re supposed to read one chapter a day of Les Mis for the whole year ๐Ÿ˜† I might just start it in a few days after I clear out some other books on my currently reading shelf. I get stressed when I have too many going at once ๐Ÿ˜ณ 2mo
JenlovesJT47 @Gissy I know what you mean. I routinely do a Harry Potter reread every year or two & I speed through those big books so fast! I‘m currently on the 4th Outlander book which has 1800 pages on my ereader (so like 900 pages in the physical copy of the book) & have been reading slowly since October. ๐Ÿฅต 2mo
julieclair @Gissy Hooray for finishing 8 chunksters last year!! ๐Ÿ† My goal for this year is to read 3. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I‘d like to read The Count of Monte Christo at some point, too. 2mo
julieclair @JenlovesJT47 I forgot Les MIs was for the whole year! ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ 2mo
Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes Good challenge! I hope to join in once I get back to Ohio, where the majority of my books are. I have plenty to choose from! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“š (edited) 2mo
MatchlessMarie I plan on starting with Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky. Two of my hopefuls for the year are from previously failed buddy reads (completely on my part ๐Ÿ˜‚) I attempted Les Mis CAD in 2023 and a Count of Monte Cristo Buddy Read from circa 2018 or so ๐Ÿซฃ I would also like to get to House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. 2mo
Andrew65 Last year I read 20 books over 500 pages, although a lot of these were in the first half of the year. Not sure which one I‘m starting with but these are the ones I‘m hoping to get to initially.

1. Natchez Burning - Greg Iles, 969 Pages
2. A Discovery of Witches - Deborah Harkness, 704 Pages
3. The Scarlet Lion- Elizabeth Chadwick, 608 Pages
4. Knights of the Black and White - Jack Whyte, 576 Pages
5. Act of Oblivion - Robert Harris, 596 Pages
2mo
willaful One of my roll 100 books is Book of Love (650pg) so I might go with that, but I have been reading an awful lot of fantasy lately so may instead go with Table for Two. It's not quite 500 pages but I'm counting any book that I find intimidating. :-) 2mo
Andrew65 I‘ve succumbed and am starting the year long read of Les Miserables. 2mo
TheBookgeekFrau I hope this is easier to follow than War and Peace was!! ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿผ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿผ 2mo
dabbe @TheBookHippie I don't have one written out, but my book works out to about 4 pages per day. I just finished reading them! I'm going to put a post-it-note where I stop and every day count 4 pages. Do you think that'll work? ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป 2mo
julieclair @Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes Glad you‘re joining us! Anytime you‘re ready to start is fine. This is a very low key challenge. ๐Ÿ˜€ 2mo
julieclair @MatchlessMarie I‘m a Count of Monte Cristo buddy read dropout, too! ๐Ÿ˜‚ 2mo
dabbe I hope to read three, or should I say I PLAN to read 3! ๐Ÿ˜‚ One: LES MIS. Two: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norell (never read it!). Three: TOMBLAND (Shardlake reread). Am I too crazy? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ 2mo
dabbe @Andrew65 YAY! ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ 2mo
julieclair @Andrew65 That‘s a great list! ๐Ÿ‘ And I‘m proud of you for joining the Les Mis buddy read. I‘m still a bit too allergic to tackle that one. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ 2mo
dabbe @TheBookgeekFrau Me, too! Those Russian names! (and now the French ones!). Maybe I should create a sheet with American names, so instead of Monseigneur Myriel, I could call him Fred. ๐Ÿ˜‚ 2mo
julieclair @TheBookgeekFrau If you tackled War and Peace, you can handle anything! ๐Ÿ˜˜ 2mo
julieclair @willaful If you find it intimidating, it totally counts! ๐Ÿ˜Ž 2mo
julieclair @dabbe You are not crazy. You have a PLAN! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜˜ 2mo

dabbe @julieclair But sometimes โ€œthe best laid plans of mice and menโ€œ ... ๐Ÿ˜‚ 2mo

Gissy @julieclair I will order the book this week because my wallet was stolen yesterday๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ˜ซand I‘m in the process to replace the credit cards. Today I will go to the bank to obtain a provisional one but the one with the credit card (visa/MasterCard) logo I think takes like a week. I hate my bank since it takes so long to replace a card. Then I have to order the book and wait for the arrival. I want the vintage edition. โฌ‡๏ธ 2mo
Gissy @julieclair. (Cont.) I have a beautiful Spanish edition but I will like to read it in conjunction with the audiobook. But believe it or not, sometimes I can‘t follow some audiobooks in Spanish. Some versions are not easy to follow for me ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธI have problems I know ๐Ÿคฃ 2mo
julieclair @Gissy Oh no! How frustrating and inconvenient. What a way to start the new year. I hope the replacement process goes as smoothly as possible. ๐Ÿ’™ And I love your idea of reading in conjunction with listening. I often wish I had a physical book to refer to when listening to audiobooks. Sometimes I just want to flip back through the pages to check a name or scene, and that‘s almost impossible to do on audio. 2mo
JenlovesJT47 @Gissy Outlander is so good! If you like that type of thing I‘d highly recommend the show โค๏ธโค๏ธโค๏ธ 2mo
Gissy @JenlovesJT47 Let‘s see if I can read that first book to start the series. I have the first book in English but the whole series in Spanish ๐Ÿ˜ณI was planning to start the series long time ago๐Ÿ™„Let‘s seeโ€ฆ 2mo
Gissy @julieclair Yesterday I obtained my new card and ordered already the book๐Ÿ™ŒI was surprised that they gave me a new card the same day. Ordering the book was like a therapeutic gift to compensate that bad experience๐Ÿ˜ƒSee you soon in that long reading mourning๐Ÿ˜ณโ˜บ๏ธ 2mo

A sweeping panoramic view of late 19th-century Russia and the strict confines of noble women. I was surprised to see that Levin was more like Anna than any other character, and the novel was really about both of them, not just Anna. Though a tragic character, Anna was unlikable at times, but perhaps she wouldn't have been if she had lived in the modern era. 4.5/5

Mehso-so

I canโ€˜t believe Iโ€˜m actually saying this, but as far as Iโ€˜m concerned, Anna Karenina is justโ€ฆ fine? It wasnโ€˜t the dreadful slog I was worried it might be, but it wasnโ€˜t brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same either. If youโ€˜re thinking about reading it, go ahead โ€“ thereโ€˜s no reason to be afraid. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/anna-karenina-leo-tolstoy-review/

Ruthiella I read it a long time ago but I DREADED the parts with Levin and his interminable thoughts. ๐Ÿ˜‚ 2y
Lindy @Ruthiella I was the opposite! I enjoyed Levin‘s pontifications but got really impatient with Anna and her shenanigans. Is it offensive to say I was pleased with the outcome for Anna? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ 2y
AvidReader25 @Lindy I‘m with you Lindy. I loved watching Levin‘s transformation and got tired of Anna. 2y

BarbaraBB And I am with you @Ruthiella although I loved the book as a whole. I read it in my teens and was so proud of myself that I did! 2y
IuliaC We should bear in mind it was published in 1878. It makes sense we don't resonate anymore neither with the plot, nor with the characters or the writing style... 2y
batsy @Lindy @AvidReader25 I agree! #TeamLevin ๐Ÿ˜† 2y
CarolynM I‘m #TeamLevin too @batsy @AvidReader25 @Lindy but like @BarbaraBB I was a teenager when I read it so I was completely on board with the grand passion and very much moved by Anna‘s fate. 2y
BarbaraBB Exactly @CarolynM ! The drama! 2y
batsy @CarolynM I read it as an adult and absolutely loved it. The epic grandeur, the language... Just got a teeny bit annoyed with Anna as @Lindy ๐Ÿ˜said but even that basically added to the experience ๐Ÿ˜ 2y
CatMS Recently bought a used copy from my library bookstore, as thought it was time to read it. A friend read it recently and like it. Also said it wasn't difficult. 2y
keepingupwiththepenguins @CatMS I think the right translation makes a big difference. Enjoy! โค๏ธ 2y

Just finished this awesome bookish puzzle ๐Ÿงฉ. I have the first lines mug & when I saw someone on here ๐Ÿค” post this puzzle, I had to get one for me, and one for my puzzling book-loving friend Sophie for Christmas โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™๐ŸŽ„.

Lindy I have a mug versionโ€ฆ not as many first lines fit on it, but the layout is the same. ๐Ÿ‘ 2y
