I‘m not equipped to judge whether or not this is “the greatest novel ever written”, as has been alleged. But it did make me think a lot. It covers just about every human emotion in its pages, and many social, religious, and philosophical ideas as well. I‘m glad I read it, but won‘t be rereading it again anytime soon!

Completed the Chunkster level for #ChunksterChallenge2025. I‘d give it a pick because it is a story well told (and well translated, if you get the P+V version). I wouldn‘t say it‘s the “greatest novel of all time,” as some reviews call it. It does provide an interesting historical context of its time. And now I can finally check it off my list. ✔️

monalyisha I *loved* this when I read it. But that was over 15 years ago! If I remember correctly, I may have even mentioned Levin in my internet dating profile (something about a “sweaty, lean farmer with metaphysical concerns”?). 😅🥵 1mo

Amiable @monalyisha If I were going to pick a sweaty Russian out of the bunch, it would definitely be Levin! 😄 And I also loved Kitty. Anna, not so much. I actually felt sorry for Karenin. Stiva and Vronsky were basically Russian frat boys -- ugh. 1mo

CoverToCoverGirl Congratulations! 🎉 I have attempted this book several times but could never get past the first handful of chapters. 1mo

Amiable @CoverToCoverGirl The fact that the chapters are all pretty short is basically what propelled me through some of the sections, I'm not gonna lie. 😃 I could read two chapters (i.e. 5 pages) and feel like I'd accomplished something for the day. 1mo

mcctrish I read AK with a book club a long time ago and I only finished it because I got so sick I couldn‘t get out of bed 🤣🤣🤣 BUT I am glad I did. It turned out to be a book I had to finish to appreciate. It will be so good as a buddy read ❤️❤️❤️but once was enough 😉 2mo

I‘m currently on the 4th Outlander book which has 1800 pages on my ereader (so like 900 pages in the physical copy of the book) & have been reading slowly since October. 🥵 2mo

Two of my hopefuls for the year are from previously failed buddy reads (completely on my part 😂) I attempted Les Mis CAD in 2023 and a Count of Monte Cristo Buddy Read from circa 2018 or so 🫣 I would also like to get to House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. 2mo

After initially feeling totally unable to distinguish between some of the male characters, I am far enough along to feel as if the characters are within my grasp. Only in pg. 91. I have a free period at work(prep) & I have been rewarding myself with reading this text then while my brain is still working! I am beginning to enjoy this novel. #KareninaWinter

A sweeping panoramic view of late 19th-century Russia and the strict confines of noble women. I was surprised to see that Levin was more like Anna than any other character, and the novel was really about both of them, not just Anna. Though a tragic character, Anna was unlikable at times, but perhaps she wouldn't have been if she had lived in the modern era. 4.5/5

I can‘t believe I‘m actually saying this, but as far as I‘m concerned, Anna Karenina is just… fine? It wasn‘t the dreadful slog I was worried it might be, but it wasn‘t brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same either. Lindy @Ruthiella I was the opposite! I enjoyed Levin‘s pontifications but got really impatient with Anna and her shenanigans. Is it offensive to say I was pleased with the outcome for Anna? 😬 2y

IuliaC We should bear in mind it was published in 1878. It makes sense we don't resonate anymore neither with the plot, nor with the characters or the writing style... 2y

batsy @CarolynM I read it as an adult and absolutely loved it. The epic grandeur, the language... Just got a teeny bit annoyed with Anna as @Lindy 😍said but even that basically added to the experience 😁 2y
