Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War
Grunt: The Curious Science of Humans at War | Mary Roach
Best-selling author Mary Roach explores the science of keeping human beings intact, awake, sane, uninfected, and uninfested in the bizarre and extreme circumstances of war. Grunt tackles the science behind some of a soldier's most challenging adversariespanic, exhaustion, heat, noiseand introduces us to the scientists who seek to conquer them. Mary Roach dodges hostile fire with the U.S. Marine Corps Paintball Team as part of a study on hearing loss and survivability in combat. She visits the fashion design studio of U.S. Army Natick Labs and learns why a zipper is a problem for a sniper. She visits a repurposed movie studio where amputee actors help prepare Marine Corps medics for the shock and gore of combat wounds. At Camp Lemmonier, Djibouti, in east Africa, we learn how diarrhea can be a threat to national security. Roach samples caffeinated meat, sniffs an archival sample of a World War II stink bomb, and stays up all night with the crew tending the missiles on the nuclear submarine USS Tennessee. She answers questions not found in any other book on the military: Why is DARPA interested in ducks? How is a wedding gown like a bomb suit? Why are shrimp more dangerous to sailors than sharks? Take a tour of duty with Roach, and youll never see our nations defenders in the same way again.

I‘m a huge fan of Roach‘s, but I admit that the subject matter is why it was the last one of hers on my TBR… it‘s my least favorite of hers for sure. The humor that I usually chuckle along with falls flat & disrespectfully here. Plus, the research here feels redundant across her other books— from bird strikes & other animal testing like in Fuzz, cadaver handling in Stiff, fabrics & extreme temperatures in Packing for Mars & smells & poo in Gulp!

BkClubCare I have never read her books but probably have ALL on my tbr because of the high praise but the ONE (and now, I can‘t recall which) didn‘t sit well and I have yet to commit! Should I just try her very first? 7mo
TorieStorieS @BkClubCare I started with Stiff, and it‘s probably tied for my favorite with Gulp! I read Stiff, but listened to Gulp. Neither are for the squeamish (or for enjoying while eating!)… 7mo

I‘ve read most of Roach‘s books and didn‘t feel this was her best, possibly because the subject matter wasn‘t as appealing to me. However, it was well-researched, as always. I do think I need to start reading her books in print, tho. My mind tends to wander on audio w/ non-fiction titles.

Overall I found this informative and interesting. I like the focus on unusual aspects of combat readiness.

My major complaint is that I don‘t find Roach to be as funny as she thinks she is, and she was trying really hard to be funny. Her tone and perspective are often grating to me as a veteran. At times it feels she‘s deliberately misunderstanding things to make a point about civilian vs military perspective.

Glad this was a freebie.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa She has that same sense of humor in all her books, so it‘s definitely her style not really making fun of military. I think her style is trying to show how odd/funny real life can be when we really look at it...but that‘s just my take. 4y
ravenlee @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I see what she‘s trying to do, and when it works it‘s great. It just seemed really forced a lot of the time. I felt the same way reading Sarah Vowell, whichever of her books I read a million years ago, so I think there‘s just something about the style that doesn‘t work for me. I‘d prefer less genuine humor than more contrived, if that makes sense. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ravenlee Yes, Sarah Vowell has a sort of similar style, humorous but in a different way, more, maybe snarky, but not quite that. I enjoy them both, but I know they aren‘t for everyone. 4y
Clare-Dragonfly I tend to think she is very funny, but you‘re right, she does try very hard! Much as I liked the first two books of hers I read, they made me so nauseated that I don‘t plan to read more. 4y

This passage, with the author being dumbfounded and horrified by the blase attitude of the crew to the nuclear drill, bothers me. Obviously, my perspective is different.

The purpose of the drills and all the practice for all nuke crews is to make it routine (just like the previous chapter about combat medics). So if it‘s ever real it‘s automatic and proceeds as always. That‘s what would be needed in that situation.

Cont below

ravenlee Nobody wants to be in that situation (least of all the crews themselves, who become high-priority targets in a nuclear engagement). But when push comes to shove all those procedures have to be second nature. 4y

“...what the Air Force and the aviation industry, with signature clipped machismo, call birdstrike.”

I‘m confused - what else would you call a bird striking aircraft?

This is my first Roach, and so far I‘m not terribly impressed with her tone. Maybe because the military is near and dear to me (I‘m well aware of the drawbacks, thanks, but I‘m also a brat/vet/spouse/sister/cousin/niece/granddaughter/etc) and I don‘t appreciate the snark. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ImperfectCJ Fellow brat here! I haven't read this one by Roach, but I'm similarly sensitive about dismissive/snarky attitudes about the military. Criticism is fine, though, and I can see a strong case for making fun of the millions of acronyms. Talking to my dad (retired from active duty but still working at the Pentagon) can sometimes require translation. 4y
ravenlee @ImperfectCJ I agree, criticism and well-meaning ribbing is fine - even welcome (hell, that‘s half of being in the service in the first place). What bothers me is the kind of aloof, “I‘m better/smarter than anyone who would join the military” attitude, and there‘s some of that coming through here. Less than in the beginning though. I think the intro was the worst of that. 4y
ravenlee @ImperfectCJ the acronyms are excessive. I always say one of my jobs as mil-spouse is to act as simultaneous translator for friends/family, which is made easier by my own service. But it‘s been a while and I‘m finding that I have forgotten or never learned some of what my husband spouts and it‘s disconcerting! 4y

This is a fun read, despite the serious asides about the hard facts of war. Whether she is looking at sleep deprivation, hearing loss, genital reconstruction, odor issues, bathroom emergencies, or smell weapons Roach asks the questions you‘d probably be too embarrassed to ask....which lead to some great answers and great stories, and some myth-buster-like experiments and scientific research as she peels back the curtain and lets us peek behind.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishJess Inadvertently yes. The inventor named it after the Bikini Atoll, where nuclear bombs were tested, he wanted his creation to be as explosive.... but the original native meaning for bikini was coconut place (I‘m guessing before it became a nuclear testing site, it was a great place for the locals to collect coconuts). 4y

These chapters on the attempt to use smell in warfare are so interesting and funny, why use teargas to disperse a crowd when you can deploy Standard Bathroom Malodor or some Who Me? Or Stink Soup instead....but this next chapter seems fitting as I start to see the Shark Week Commercials pop up on US TV.

#AuthorAMonth

GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics She always finds out the answers to the questions you didn‘t know you had & each one leads her to something else usually equally unexpected. I have read about developing new crash test dummy‘s for road IED‘s (explosion up instead of the usual head on/side impact) using cadaver studies, to medically fixing the damage of those those injuries (you always hear about PTSD, but what about the genital reconstruction), etc..too smell warfare 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics This chapter starts with the smell/repellent idea, with the OSS (US Secret Service during WWII) trying to develop a shark repellent because flyers were going down in warmer tropical waters (unlike other wars) and stories were starting to scare off flyers. So the Anthropologist to the President (why have we lost this office) began to oversea a project, but almost no one at the time knew anything about shark biology, so they had to... 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...start from scratch... with a primatologist who was a Gorilla expert, an expert on Komodo Dragons, and a college dropout who had worked as a commercial fisherman. 😂 4y
GingerAntics We need that office again. I don‘t know what said scholar would do, but it just sounds fun!!! 4y

GingerAntics I‘m rather hoping that there was a nonblindfolded pilot next to him that would prevent them from crashing. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics You‘d often be surprised by the answers of the crazy things humans have done to test our theories and equipment...some a bit gross, most pretty funny. I‘m just starting this one, so I can‘t answer that specific question yet, but my first book by her was Packing for Mars, and some of the things the early astronaut program tested, with willing human subjects, reads like hilarious spoofing madness now. 4y
GingerAntics Oh wow. Okay. That‘s...partly funny and partly disturbing. 🤣😂🤣 I‘m feeling very torn over that. I may have to read Bonk finally, now. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GingerAntics I have this one & Bonk on my to read pile, but her stuff always makes me laugh and shake my head...so I‘ll probably read her whole back catalog eventually. 4y

July 2020 Read - Grunt by Mary Roach - I really liked Stiff by the same author, but this one didn't connect with me. I was curious about the subject, but ultimately didn't feel like I was the right audience for it. I still really would like to get to some of her other books! (I listened to this on audio and had no complaints about the narrator).

This book was just weird and rather gross. It is about the science that helps take care of the military. Its definitely not a book to read while eating and is rather too informative in certain cases (like the chapters dedicated to genital replacement or diarrhea).

I love Mary‘s quirky look at little known areas of military science. I especially love the chapter on diarrhea, and I think “inabilitated” is my new favorite word for being sick! She reports on everything from realistic medical scenarios on a movie set to sleep deprivation in submariners.

Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I haven‘t read Stiff, but I enjoyed this and Gulp. I have Packing for Mars to read later this month. 4y
Megabooks @Soubhiville did you get this for my #authoramonth total? 4y
Soubhiville 🤣 “I especially loved the chapter on diarrhea...” LOL I almost spit out my tea! I‘m tracking AAM books differently now- there are just way too many posts to keep up with, so I just ask everyone to give me their totals at the end of each month. 😁. Mary Roach is such a great writer. I‘m glad you enjoyed this! 4y
Megabooks @Soubhiville you have to have a special affinity for poop to be a veterinarian! You have probably worked with a few, as a dog groomer (you‘re a groomer, right?), or maybe it‘s just me!! 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 also, if you are a groomer, what‘s your opinion on mobile grooming? I‘ve contacted the only one in town, and I‘m not sure if there‘s anything different I need to ask. It‘s getting harder and harder for Henry to go to the groomer at 17 yo. 4y
Soubhiville I also do have to deal with a lot of poop and anal glands! I no longer wear scrubs with pockets near the bottom because I‘ve had small dogs manage to poop in the pockets. 😖. I think a mobile groomer is a very smart move for an older or nervous pet. That way he doesn‘t have to be away from home as long, no in and out of the car, no time in a kennel. I support that choice! 4y
Megabooks @Soubhiville great!! Hopefully I‘ll hear back from him soon!! 4y

I am so thankful I stumbled across Mary Roach. I never would have thought I would enjoy a non fiction book about science...let alone one involving the military. But she has this way of making the most complicated subjects approachable, and so, so fascinating.
Roach gives readers a glimpse at the science and humanity behind the people who go to war, instead of the war itself.
