Theft of Swords
Theft of Swords | Michael J. Sullivan
Royce Melborn, a skilled thief, and his mercenary partner, Hadrian Blackwater, make a profitable living carrying out dangerous assignments for conspiring nobles-until they are hired to pilfer a famed sword. What appears to be just a simple job finds them framed for the murder of the king and trapped in a conspiracy that uncovers a plot far greater than the mere overthrow of a tiny kingdom. Can a self-serving thief and an idealistic swordsman survive long enough to unravel the first part of an ancient mystery that has toppled kings and destroyed empires? And so begins the first tale of treachery and adventure, sword fighting and magic, myth and legend. When author Michael J. Sullivan self-published the first books of his Riyria Revelations, they rapidly became ebook bestsellers. Now, Orbit is pleased to present the complete series for the first time in bookstores everywhere. Theft of Swords was originally published as: The Crown Conspiracy and Avempartha. I love a lot of genres, but fantasy has always been my favorite and holds a special place in my heart! Give me a sprawling, epic fantasy any day! 💕📚

Branwen @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @OriginalCyn620 Thanks guys! 😁 @ljuliel I WISH I could read that fast and that much in three days! 😂🤣 @vivastory I think it looks really promising! I was a little skeptical at first but now I'm keeping more of an open mind! How about you? 1mo
vivastory I'm definitely intrigued. I'm looking forward to the Amazon fantasy series more (LOTR & Wheel of Time), I think. But I have hopes for Witcher. I haven't read any of the books yet. Which one do you recommend as a good starting point? 1mo
Branwen @vivastory I know what you mean, I am SO PSYCHED for the Wheel of Time series! So the way they numbered the books (at least the rereleased editions) is weird and doesn't make sense. There is book #1, which is called Blood of Elves, but I would actually start with the one entitled The Last Wish, which is not numbered. Read that one first! They are fantastic books! 😁💕📚 1mo
vivastory Thanks for the recommendation 👍 1mo

I hate when I‘m too tired to read. 😴😴

Did at least 4 hours of yard work today! We are trying to create a bigger backyard so had to pull out trees and brush (which you can kind of see in the background) and will hopefully get clean fill this week!

Relaxing by the fire now and trying to burn some of the wood! No reading happening right now.

I‘m about 100 pages into this book and enjoying it so far!

#SundayReads #SundayFunday

LibrarianRyan I get it. Took 2 hours just to take the leaves off the back patio. The front patio will be worse because it‘s a lot of sticks that have to be pulled out of all the leaves. But that is tomorrow night. 8mo

Mehso-so

Book 32 of 2019 - I'm really torn about this epic fantasy. It's a very standard swords-and-sorcery epic with lots of fantasy tropes and a medieval European world. There was also a real lack of interesting female characters (so often an issue in fantasy, sigh). However, the characters and the central mystery were just intriguing enough to keep me reading for hundreds of pages.

KtheBookwyrm I read the entire trilogy and I felt like it was very generic and the female representation was abominable—I believe there was one notable female character and she spent a lot of time “falling in love” super quickly. I see a lot of praise and hype for this series but I was left feeling very meh. 6mo
Lucy_Anywhere Yes! I picked it up because people had a lot of love fir it... but couldn't see anything special about it and the whole lack of female characters is worrying, especially for a novel that isn't that old. I'll probably not bother with the rest of the series 6mo

The Good:
Likeable characters, detailed world building, lots of swashbuckling action, appropriate for any age group or audience

The Bad:
Underdeveloped characters (especially the female characters), too much exposition, a lot of tropes, longer than it needed to be

Not the best fantasy novel I've read, but overall it was very enjoyable. I've already bought the next book in the series and I'm looking forward to reading it.

I‘m planning to offer up more recommendations moving forward, and thought I‘d start with the works of one of my favourite authors, Michael J. Sullivan. If you like the fantasy genre and haven‘t yet read Sullivan‘s Riyria books, I can‘t recommend them enough (start with Theft of Swords). They are also great books to try if you‘re interested in reading fantasy but are unsure where to start.

#recommendsday

Bookzombie Is this a completed series or ongoing? I stacked it either way. 🙂 2y
Melissa_J @Bookzombie The Riyria Revelations books (Theft of Swords, Rise of Empire, and Heir of Novron) are complete, the Riyria Chronicles (starting with The Crown Tower) is ongoing. It features the same characters as Revelations but is set earlier - I‘d still read Revelations first though. The First Empire series (starts with Age of Myth) is his latest, and will be six or seven books long — only the first two have been released. (edited) 2y
Bookzombie @Melissa_J Thanks! I‘m not sure when I will get to them, but trying to avoid a GoT situation. 🙂 2y

Bailedbailed

I have found similarities in the author's writing style with that of Terry Brooks. From the first book there are references to the deer, elves, goblins, but they are never deep. the reader becomes aware of some history of elves. And that is the element I loved the most. To get to know the plot very slowly, however, without boring me. As soon as I finished the last page I perceived the lack of character jokes and their lack.

Next up! I had picked up the crown tower, thinking it was the first book in the series, when I realized it was a prequel. I wanted to read the story in the order it was published, as apparently there are little hidden tidbits to be found in the prequels which is always fun. So I'm going to dive into this massive story, wish me luck!

Michael J. Sullivan self-pubbed the Riyria Revelations as 6 books; but when Orbit re-issued them, they combined them into a trilogy. Technically, I have read the first book about a pair of good-hearted thieves who work among the nobility in this feudal fantasy; but have only read half of the first volume. It was just okay; nothing that makes me scream for more; but I will probably read 'Avempartha' (Second part of the first book). 👇

Dogearedcopy A buddy story set in a land of castles, a lot happens; but it lacks energy and wonder. It's kinda cute though. If the second book fails to hook me, I'll jump into the Riyria Chronicles which I understand are more about Hadrian & Royce in the early years (?) 2y
Siannalyn It was the same for me, the first time I've read this book, but then I let years pass before deciding to dig in Avempartha so I've choosen to start again from the beginning and I madly fell in love with all of it, the story, the world and the characters! 2y

Half-Way Status Update: I'm halfway done with 'The Crown Conspiracy' and I have to confess I find it a bit disappointing; but I also acknowledge that I may be comparing it unfairly with Mark Lawrence's feudal fantasy, The Broken Empire trilogy - which I think is absolutely brilliant! There's nothing egregiously wrong w/TCC; there's just nothing terribly compelling so far either :-/

So, I sat down this evening to start The Riyria Chronicles (thinking that it would be an excellent week-end reading project,) only to discover that the author really recommends reading The Riyria Revelations first! Quick run to B&N to pick up 'Theft of Swords'... Managed to get in the first chapter which reminded me a bit of 'The Scarlet Pimpernel!' So yeah, I'm in! 👍🏼
