In the witch kingdom Hyalin, the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair. Those that are strong enough are conscripted by the Witch Guard, who enforce the law in peacetime and protect the land during war. However, those with hair judged too long are pronounced enemies of the kingdom, and annihilated. This is called a witch burning. Witchy is a comic about the young witch Nyneve, who is haunted by the death of her father and the threat the Witch Guard poses to her own life. When conscription rolls around, Nyneve has a choice to make; join the institution complicit in her father's death, or stand up for her ideals? Witchy was nominated for the 2015 Ignatz for Outstanding Online Comic, the 2016 DINKy for Outstanding Web Comic, and the Danish "Pingprisen" for Best Online Series in 2017 and 2018.

Book love! Forest spirits! Raven friend! Trans rep! The colours, the art! Not all cozy fantasy feels though: challenges include corruption, abuse of power, state sanctioned killings, tightly controlled society.
Enough messaging about community vs cultish fanaticism, free will vs prescribed path to keep things interesting. Positively gleeful about the opportunity to carry right on into the second volume. 🪄🧙🏻

This graphic novel adventure series from Australia features a strong female main character in a pan-Asian society in a fantasy world archipelago with lots of queer rep. More please! #comics #LGBTQ #YA

In a reading slump (again) so I've been catching up on my comic backlog. Entertaining enough to get through, but I felt like some of the story and worldbuilding were missing. May pick up the 2nd one.

Such a magical graphic novel with beautiful illustrations. It takes place in a world where the strength of your magic is determined by the length of your hair. But if your hair is too long, you are considered too powerful and eliminated. Nyneve lost her father to such a witch burning and no longer trusts the Witch Guard, who have an now come to recruit her class based on their magic skills.

Too tired to walk the dog today (busy day at work and trying to get over a nasty cold) so letting Dottie putter around the yard while I read comics. I‘m rereading this one to refresh myself before I jump in to volume 2. V1 is a lot of setup, and I‘m interested to finally see some of the payoff. The characters are likable and I love the artist‘s style. The world reminds me a bit of Avatar, but not as goofy.

I borrowed this beautiful graphic novel from a friend this month and loved spending a cozy afternoon in my reading corner diving into this story. To start, the artwork is phenomenal! The characters are so cute and expressive but the scenery is what really stands out to me. The color pallets are beautiful and calming; I spent so much time just looking at the art work. As far as the story, there were some...

Another Hoopla read! I guess I am all about the free graphic novels this week. It was nice to work on my wish list a bit and not spend any money! 💰

This was good. I didn't love it, though. I wanted to, but I felt at a distance from the story. I was curious what would happen next, but also not invested in it. It should be my type of book, but I think I have just read other strong female lead type books lately that were better for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m very picky when it comes to graphic novels, but I must say that this one wasn‘t bad. I definitely wasn‘t a huge fan of the art style or the hair concept that the novel revolves around. I also wasn‘t a fan of how Nyneve treated Banana for most of the book. The plot was strong, especially towards the end of the novel, and I was disappointed when it came to an end. I would definitely consider reading its sequel if I get the chance.

Long-haired Nyneve lives in a dangerous world where witches' hair length is an indication of magical strength, but if your hair is too long, the local government murders you. She must figure out how to survive in a society that would rather burn her. I rather enjoyed this volume & look forward to reading more. The world building is excellent, and the art is lovely. I also appreciate non-binary and transgender visibility here. #lgbtq #comic #magic

Bk5 of my #JuneBookHaul is a graphic novel that also came in a book box, I think it was #Owlcrate this time. In the Witch kingdom of Hyalin, the strength of your magic is governed by the length of your hair. Those strong enough are conscripted into the Witch Guard but those whose hair is too long are burned as heretics. It reminds me a bit of that new series, Motherland:Fort Salem, which I was expecting to be awful but was pretty good all up.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I dig the cover! 4y

Recovering from a killer cold that was my two-year-old nice‘s holiday gift. Luckily, I have a huge stack of comics to keep me busy. Witchy is the first volume in a series, and is mostly just the inciting incident and world building, but I can‘t wait to see where it goes. The characters are likable, the magic system is interesting, and it has a slightly Avatar flair/humor, though it is a shade or two darker. Can‘t wait for Volume 2!

This is a well crafted story. Not only is the magic system in the story different from anything I‘ve read and intriguing (hair length is a sign of magical power) but each character, from the guards to the main character‘s mother, seems to have their own story and inner emotional life.

Finally read this one (and at a very seasonally appropriate time too), and I'm so glad I did. Reading it online gave me Nimona flashbacks, though very nice it's now in book form too. Witches whose power is connected to their hair length, corrupt government, and secret rebellions. Interesting worldbuilding and magic system and I got some Last Airbender vibes from it which I am SO on board for.

I really enjoyed this first off. Nyneve was such a fascinating character to read and learn about. The LGBTQ representation was a nice surprise! But I must talk about the art. Such a pleasant style
I loved the colors and the panels on occasion reminded me of the brilliant samurai jack.

This story is Kiki‘s delivery service and Samson and Delilah set in the world of Korra with a tweeny witch vibe sprinkled over.... 4/5⭐️

LibrarianRyan I agree with you about the art. I had a galley and most of the words were missing so I had a hard time following the the story line. I had high hopes. I hope to get a physical copy and give it another try. 5y

1 🌟 Too many important words blanked out. There were interesting things about transgenderism in this fantastical world, but as mentioned above the words were blanked out in my galley. I did not find myself liking any of the characters, and to be honest it reminded me a bit of Children of Blood and Bone for the way the teacher was illustrated, but there were also hints of Mortal Engines, etc. This was not for me. I tried, but it failed.

silentrequiem Is this a digital ARC? You may need to upgrade Adobe Digital Editions. I had the same issue before with graphic novel ARCS not downloading correctly. Missing text, blank pages, etc. 5y
LibrarianRyan @silentrequiem I have. I use Bluefire reader on my ipad and I have updated it, and reloaded the books multiple times. No such luck. And most of the ones this was happening to are all from the same publisher. 5y

Illustrated here is one of the things I hate that publishers do with galleys. They leave the words out of select pages so people don‘t put them on on file share sites. I am assuming this is a conversation about being a transgender witch but I have no idea.

Mandigolightly Why bother sending out galleys then??? 5y
LibrarianRyan @Mandigolightly exactly. And I checked. Sometimes my app gets overloaded and leaves parts out. But I reset this one multiple times. Not my app. 5y

I read it in one sitting. I love the art, the characters, the magic. It‘s so different and just fun. Also I love that they have a trans character in Prill and they don‘t hide the fact Nyneve clearly has a crush on Io ( which I might too lol)
