This is the lower end of the pick scale. It took me awhile to get interested in the story of Clementine Churchill. Once it did pick up, Clementine seems full of herself; this might be due to Benedict‘s choice to use first person, making the book read like a memoir instead of a novel. I think Benedict meant for the reader to see Clementine as Winston‘s collaborator who in different times would have had a more visible role of her own in politics.

Caroline2 I know what you mean. I struggled to relate to her too. Think I bailed near the end as it just became too much like hardwork. 11mo

I recently read a non-fiction book regarding the esteemable lady and like with most of my reading it leads me down rabbit holes to find other titles I've yet to explore. Whilst it's a fictionalized tale this still managed to be a very solid read. This author has an uncanny way of bringing these women to life for the reader. Highly recommend this one.

CoverToCoverGirl This was a good read. 12mo

Although I did enjoy learning about Clementine Churchill, this was not my favourite Marie Benedict book. I preferred the second half of the book, which described her role during WWII.

"When the successors to our time appraise Winston and this awful war, as they surely must, I know that they will see Winston's hand on the pen that scribes history. But, I wonder, will they see that my hand has also been on the pen all along?"

In 1909, Clementine Churchill steps off a train with her new husband, Winston. An angry woman emerges from the crowd to attack, shoving him in the direction of an oncoming train. Just before he stumbles, Clementine grabs him by his suit jacket. This will not be the last time Clementine Churchill saves her husband.

EadieB This was an interesting book about Mrs. Churchill. She was said to have had the most influence during World War I and World War II. This was a story of the brilliant and ambitious woman beside Winston Churchill, the story of a partner who did not flinch through the sweeping darkness of war, and who would not surrender either to expectations or to enemies. I enjoyed reading this book and will look for another book by Marie Benedict to read. 2y

Nope! Hubby and I have a 60-page rule. If we‘re not into book by 60 pages in, that‘s it. This was a non-starter for me. Normally I like first-person narrative, and I get that the MC needs to do plot exposition, but this was heavy-handed. It was already an “oh, poor smart woman being put down/held back by people around her,” and I‘m not in the mood. Maybe another time, but not now.

Blaire I read another book of hers and her writing style did not suit me even though the topic was really interesting. 3y

I picked this up at the library the other day, and I‘m anxious to give it a go. I‘ve only read one previous book by the author, which I enjoyed, but I know she has mixed reviews. Mostly interested in this because we visited Churchill‘s war rooms, an underground bunker, when we were in London 4 years ago. Lady Clementine apparently spent considerable time there. I barely lasted 2 hours, it was so claustrophobic!

Still chugging away reading Lady Clementine. They are currently in World War II and reading about the air raid shelters and fire watchers have been really informative. I haven‘t had too much of a chance to read this week so I am hoping I get to finish this book this morning.

4⭐️ I quite enjoyed the book; definitely helped that it was a quick read and it didn‘t really seem to lag. I wonder what Clementine was really like, but I can imagine she was a fairly tough cookie to deal with someone that was as formidable as her husband. #ebook #historicalfiction #wwi #wwii #bookstagram #2020 #bookreview

I skimmed the then bailed the last third of the book. I just could not empathize with this woman or her story as portrayed by the author. She just irked me. Maybe I need to read Sonia Purnell‘s biography of her instead.

TheBookHippie I don‘t like this writer at allllll ! I bailed on two of her books so I‘m out! 4y

I love Marie Benedict. If you haven‘t read any of her books yet, you really should. She gives female figures in history a story. She researches very thoroughly and tells the story no ones or has forgotten.

This one is about Clementine Churchill and how much she supported Churchill during WWI, WWII and the years in between. She was an amazingly strong woman who put up with a lot of crap. She did so much to support women and give them voices.

Butterfinger I have a biography of Clementine, but have yet to read it. 4y

Lady Clementine is the story of Winston Churchill's wife. I didnt really know much about her. Though this is a work of fiction, there is much factual information about "Clemmie" in the book. She was an advocate of womens suffrage, was a liberal when her husband was conservative. As with most historical figures, I believe Churchill would have been much less successful without the strength and wisdom Clemmie embodies. ⬇️

Crazeedi She was not without flaws and weaknesses, as she had many episodes of anxiety/ depression, she was a hands off mother as was normal for upper class of that era. Her children were raised without her most of the time. But we see Clemmies assertiveness and passion for the welfare of the British citizens, especially during WW2. She stands as an example of leadership and grace under fire. 4y
ljuliel I‘ve been curious about this book, and wondering about her hair. Is that purple hair or a purple hat ? I know it‘s common today to see purple hair, but I didn‘t think they dyed it those colors back in her day. Looks like a good book which I‘ll probably get to at some point . 4y
Crazeedi @ljuliel many women in those days who colored over their gray hair ended up with hair with a purplish tinted, it was a purple gray. Hard to explain, but I had relatives whose hair was that color. 4y
Crazeedi @ljuliel or it could just be the photo, but not like that on the book, not sure because I read on my kindle 4y
ljuliel Yea I have seen a few really old ladies who tinted their white hair and it turned a little lilac color. I didn‘t know if they intended that to happen or it was some sort of a bad chemical reaction. This picture looks a lot more purple than that. Just curious. 😊 (edited) 4y

I really enjoyed this book. I‘m also watching The Crown right now so this book about Clementine, Winston Churchill‘s wife fit right in. I also watched the PBS show Churchill‘s Secret recently and was intrigued by women in Churchill‘s life and their role in history.
Also finished The Light in the Ruins by Bohjalian-on a WWII kick- and Dim Sum Of All Fears by Vivien Chien.
