The great February book haul: because Marie Benedict

This is the lower end of the pick scale. It took me awhile to get interested in the story of Clementine Churchill. Once it did pick up, Clementine seems full of herself; this might be due to Benedict‘s choice to use first person, making the book read like a memoir instead of a novel. I think Benedict meant for the reader to see Clementine as Winston‘s collaborator who in different times would have had a more visible role of her own in politics.

I recently read a non-fiction book regarding the esteemable lady and like with most of my reading it leads me down rabbit holes to find other titles I've yet to explore. Whilst it's a fictionalized tale this still managed to be a very solid read. This author has an uncanny way of bringing these women to life for the reader. Highly recommend this one.

Although I did enjoy learning about Clementine Churchill, this was not my favourite Marie Benedict book. I preferred the second half of the book, which described her role during WWII.

I‘m enjoying learning about Clementine Churchill. There are so many amazing women we need to learn about!

Nope! Hubby and I have a 60-page rule. If we‘re not into book by 60 pages in, that‘s it. This was a non-starter for me. Normally I like first-person narrative, and I get that the MC needs to do plot exposition, but this was heavy-handed. It was already an “oh, poor smart woman being put down/held back by people around her,” and I‘m not in the mood. Maybe another time, but not now.

I picked this up at the library the other day, and I‘m anxious to give it a go. I‘ve only read one previous book by the author, which I enjoyed, but I know she has mixed reviews. Mostly interested in this because we visited Churchill‘s war rooms, an underground bunker, when we were in London 4 years ago. Lady Clementine apparently spent considerable time there. I barely lasted 2 hours, it was so claustrophobic!

Still chugging away reading Lady Clementine. They are currently in World War II and reading about the air raid shelters and fire watchers have been really informative. I haven‘t had too much of a chance to read this week so I am hoping I get to finish this book this morning.

4⭐️ I quite enjoyed the book; definitely helped that it was a quick read and it didn‘t really seem to lag. I skimmed the then bailed the last third of the book. I just could not empathize with this woman or her story as portrayed by the author. She just irked me. Maybe I need to read Sonia Purnell‘s biography of her instead.

I love Marie Benedict. If you haven‘t read any of her books yet, you really should. She gives female figures in history a story. She researches very thoroughly and tells the story no ones or has forgotten.

This one is about Clementine Churchill and how much she supported Churchill during WWI, WWII and the years in between. She was an amazingly strong woman who put up with a lot of crap. She did so much to support women and give them voices.

Lady Clementine is the story of Winston Churchill's wife. I didnt really know much about her. Though this is a work of fiction, there is much factual information about "Clemmie" in the book. She was an advocate of womens suffrage, was a liberal when her husband was conservative. As with most historical figures, I believe Churchill would have been much less successful without the strength and wisdom Clemmie embodies. ⬇️

Maybe Em had the right idea last night when she sat on this book. Not so sure about this one; something irks me. Cannot pinpoint what yet.

I really enjoyed this book. I‘m also watching The Crown right now so this book about Clementine, Winston Churchill‘s wife fit right in. I also watched the PBS show Churchill‘s Secret recently and was intrigued by women in Churchill‘s life and their role in history.
Also finished The Light in the Ruins by Bohjalian-on a WWII kick- and Dim Sum Of All Fears by Vivien Chien.
