One Hundred Nights of Hero: A Graphic Novel
One Hundred Nights of Hero: A Graphic Novel | Isabel Greenberg
115 posts | 85 read | 2 reading | 183 to read
A New York Times bestsellerAn NPR Best Book of 2016A Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2016 In the tradition of The Arabian Nights, a beautifully illustrated tapestry of folk tales and myths about the secret legacy of female storytellers in an imagined medieval world. In the Empire of Migdal Bavel, Cherry is married to Jerome, a wicked man who makes a diabolical wager with his friend Manfred: if Manfred can seduce Cherry in one hundred nights, he can have his castle--and Cherry. But what Jerome doesn't know is that Cherry is in love with her maid Hero. The two women hatch a plan: Hero, a member of the League of Secret Story Tellers, will distract Manfred by regaling him with a mesmerizing tale each night for 100 nights, keeping him at bay. Those tales are beautifully depicted here, touching on themes of love and betrayal and loyalty and madness. As intricate and richly imagined as the works of Chris Ware, and leavened with a dry wit that rivals Kate Beaton's in Hark! A Vagrant, Isabel Greenberg's One Hundred Nights of Hero will capture readers' hearts and minds, taking them through a magical medieval world.

I love all Isabel Greenberg‘s graphic novels but this was the most flawless. Twisted up and reformed versions of a million folk tale motifs, some laughs, an ending that made me physically tear up. Such an emotional and imaginative story about women sharing stories in secret in Early Earth my new favourite fantasy world. This was completely perfect.

Not perfect but it was an enjoyable graphic novel about sisterhood and women empowerment.

Hero and Cherry are lovers, but Cherry is married. Her husband makes a bet with a friend that he gets 100 nights to seduce his wife. Cherry doesn‘t know what to do, but she and Hero comes up with a plan. Hero will tell the man stories for 100 days. She tells of betrayal and loyalty, lovers both faithful and unfaithful, moons who come out of the sky, but mostly she tells about sisters, many, many sisters. Will Hero and Cherry‘s plan work?

What a perfect choice for my first foray back into graphic novels. I loved this. Fucking LOVED. I rarely cry over books, but BITCH DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY TEARS I SHED. So moving and just...it got me, you know? The structure, the art, the stories, THE ENDING. Ladies in love, fighting patriarchal BS, struggling to be free, learning to live. It‘s funny, wise, queer, feminist, whimsical, dark, BEAUTIFUL. I‘m floored. Thank you, Isabel Greenberg. 5/5 ⭐️

Eyelit I loved this one, too! 4y
AnneCecilie I just that her other novels and can absolutely recommend 4y
AnneCecilie Her newest was also good, but it‘s probably a good thing to be a Bronte fan 4y

I‘m very new—like brand new, practically—to graphic novels, and I had no idea this would be so gigantic when I ordered it. It‘s heavy AF too! But it‘s dark and queer and I‘ve heard it‘s funny and feminist too, so it‘s worth the extra effort 😜 #nowreading

BookishMarginalia Sounds like this would be right up your alley, @WanderingBookaneer ! 4y

Cherry and Hero love each other, but Cherry‘s father forces her to marry. So of course her husband makes a bet with his friend about her virtue and when he loses the bet Cherry and Hero are accused of witchcraft. All of this set in a world created by a bird girl whose father decides he wants to run her creation because it‘s too lenient and no one fears him. Not a bad story, but not great either.

Everybody loves this book: it tell‘s women‘s stories, and its mesage is how important it is to tell women‘s stories. This is good. However, I detested the format and the writing. The writing is childish, and the occasional swearing took me out of the fairy-tale feeling. Many claim this book is beautiful: but to me it looks dirty and ugly. And I hated that most men were depicted as evil, power-hungry and stupid. That‘s too simplistic. ⭐️⭐️/5

There can‘t be #noordinarylove between Hero and Cherry for a long time, because they have to deal with creepy men treating them like objects. Luckily, through story telling and rebellion, everything ends as it is supposed to 👌

#FierceFeb Day 1: This feminist graphic novel is an exquisite description of the #ModernWoman - I love how womanity is portrayed so effectively and with such utter strength, quiet voice, and resolute power in this graphic novel that turns myths over on their head with such glee and abandon.

This is my #bookhaul from the Sirens conference 📚
They had a hand curated bookshop of women‘s fantasy with 1,000 titles - not copies, TITLES - and on my first walkthrough I was pleased I already had so many of the books featured.
Meaning I would not ‘need‘ to buy any.
HAHAHA.
This is me 15 books later 😁
And they put my carry-on through the airport security scanner twice - were they wondering why anyone would have a bag of 100% books? 😹

TheWordJar Great haul! And River of Teeth!!! I need to get my hands on that one!! (There's a rhino emoji but no hippo emoji???) 6y

In this retelling of The Arabian Nights, an evil man, Manfred, tries to seduce his friend's wife, Cherry. Manfred must seduce Cherry within a hundred nights, so he keeps thinking " #tonighttonight, it is going to happen tonight!" What Manfred hasn't considered is Hero, Cherry's lover. Hero keeps telling Manfred stories every night, and she does it so well, that Manfred wants to continue to listen to stories night after night. ?✨?✨

I picked this one up right after reading Greenberg's The Encyclopedia of Early Earth. This was a different take on the Arabian Nights, a slightly underwhelming one. Some of the stories told by Hero were very interesting but the overarching premise was less so.

I've read some great books this year, but so far nothing beats my love for Isabel Greenberg's work. This is her second graphic novel to take place in the Early Earth, a world full of amazing storytellers, wise crones, impossible lovers and, especially in this second book, incredibly strong female characters. So good! #TGIFGiveaway

Kalalalatja It is one of the best graphic novels I have ever read! 7y
Aninski @Kalalalatja I don't understand why her books are so underrated! The first one had its price permanently reduced from $35 to $10 at my closest book store 😱people don't know what they're missing... 7y
