The Girl with the Louding Voice
The Girl with the Louding Voice | Abi Dar
Fourteen-year-old Adunni's life is looking for her louding voice. She wants to be heard. But her desire for an education ranks low. She is the only daughter of a broke father, who sells her into marriage as the third wife of an older man. When life in her new home becomes untenable, she escapes, only to become a domestic slave in wealthy Lagos, where her voice is stolen again by her boss Big Madam. Again and again, Adunni is reminded that she is nothing. Again and again, Adunni riles against those above her. She is resolute in her quest to find her louding voice, and that is something nobody should underestimate. Because resolution can make you fearless, and Adunni knows that better than anyone.

First book I‘ve read that takes place in Nigeria (I think 🤔). Great storytelling, and loved the historical facts sprinkled throughout the novel. Adunni is a 14 year old girl from the village of Ikati. Her mother unexpectedly passes, and her life starts to spiral in the darkest of ways. This story is about this girl‘s love for her mother, her education, and hope for her future.

While this book is handling some pretty heavy topics, the language in this book is musical. This was a joy to read.

The whole narrative is written just how Adunni, a fourteen year old Nigerian girl, speaks.

A hard-hitting look at the cultural aspects of Nigeria, the treatment of young girls, and the class system.

May all girls find their louding voices.

Five stars.

My book club‘s most recent pick. I probably wouldn‘t have chosen this on my own without book club, but I‘m glad I read it. Started a little slow and the character‘s speaking and thinking style/pattern took a minute to get used to. Really picked up about halfway thru. Reminded me of the lengths some people have go to just to have access to things that were relatively easy for me, like an education. I appreciate this perspective and Adunni‘s voice.

Adunni is a young girl from a small village that wants to go to school. Unfortunately, she is forced into marriage and then working for Big Madam in Lagos until she can fulfil her dream.

I could hear and feel Adunni throughout the book. I was rooting for her through all her misfortunes. An inspiring book to read and makes you appreciate what you have.

🌟🌟🌟🌟A wonderful story about a young 14 year old Nigerian girl navigating her way from a small country village to the city of Legos in search of an education so she can be free of a life of servitude. The book shines a light on trafficking, and poverty with just the right about of hope. I recommend the audio version to understand the broken English better.

It took me a little while to get into this book (I started a few months ago & didn‘t make it far), finally went back to it & so happy I did. It was an amazing story but also very difficult subject matter. Adunni‘s story is compelling & one that unfortunately many young girls face daily in Nigeria. I‘m happy I finally sat to read this eye opening story. #bookspin #booked2022 prompt: author born in Africa

This story had wonderful (as well as horrific) characters and gave me insight into Nigerian culture and history. It's very brutal in places, but the author softens the tone with the narrator Adunni's humour and optimism.

Why is it the women of Nigeria 🇳🇬 always suffer but never the men “ all too sad and true even now ; a story of a poor girl sold
into marriage and then to another awful fate in Lagos , I can never understand women treating other girls and women as awfully as misogynistic men. An out standing debut a sad theme but a very important one id like to see this book on the school syllabus. I particularly loved each chapter starting with a Nigerian fact

Highly rated between the covers bbc book show pick last year ; slightly predictable and all too true & horrid but an amazing debut. My second #vacationread, and I thought it was excellent. It works for #Nigeria for #readingafrica.

Adunni is a 14 year old Nigerian girl who grew up in a small village. Her mom passed away and her alcoholic father disregards the promise he made and sells Adunni into a marriage with a much older man as a third wife. That‘s just the beginning.

Adunni‘s strong spirit and her wish to do good for her country will stay with me. All the TW though.

This was such a very good read. Written in broken English, it‘s the story of a 14 yr old girl who so desperately wants to go to school to learn to be a teacher. Adunni, a 14-yo girl in #Nigeria, was raised by a mom who did everything she possibly could to ensure her daughter could get an education and have a voice in a world ruled by men. When her mother dies, her dreams are shattered when she‘s sold into marriage by her drunk cruel father who finds girls useless. Adunni suffers relentless abuse but works to find her way and her voice, even if it is broken English. An excellent story and I learned a ⬇️

Texreader lot about the country. I sometimes was frustrated with Adunni. She seemed to always speak when it could only bring her harm, but it was also that trait that had the power to set her free. I was more frustrated with the few times Adunni‘s narration—in random paragraphs—was told in strikingly good English. It felt like an editing issue because it didn‘t fit when it happened. Barring those minor issues, it‘s highly recommended. #readingafrica2022 3y

Beautiful debut from a powerful new voice. Adunni is an unforgettable protagonist that meets the traumas and challenges of her life with strength, humor, tenacity, and optimism. Her story is a difficult one, but avoids the “trauma porn” territory that so many other books like this can veer into. I wish we could know what happens next in Adunni‘s story, but I was left knowing she is on her way to changing the world. 4⭐️

This was a bonus book for me this month—I was ahead of my goal of reading 1 book per week with my eyeballs instead of my ears, so I pulled it off the BOTM shelf and just devoured it. An excellent debut with a dynamic, smart heroine that I loved rooting for. I really like that it‘s written in dialectic, but thought that was a little inconsistent at times, which was distracting. Still, a hopeful, shining book that I‘m glad I read.
