#BookHaul for a good cause. My local library put out a call for new or gently used books for kids of all ages.

They partner with P.E.I. Literary Alliance to distribute them over the holidays across the province in Xmas Hampers. I haven‘t read any of these, but the descriptions sounded good and the price point was low enough that I could buy doubles for some. Gotta get books into as many middle school hands as possible.

CBee The Wild Robot series is excellent 🤖 ♥️ 1mo
DogMomIrene @CBee Thank you for that feedback! I was trying to buy as many books as I could for about $100 and the books I knew were pricey. 1mo
CBee @DogMomIrene of course! I loved it as much as my 12 year old did ♥️ 1mo

AnnCrystal Don't know if all Dollars Tree stores stock books. One just opened in my neighborhood and they had, limited, yet a really interesting selection. All with a sticker price of around $2.

Example of what my local store had:

A good selection of Judy Blume (I didn't buy, not my usual genre).

A few books in the Creepers series (really want to collect more of those).

Young readers books for toddlers and little kids (found a Batman 🦇💝).

(edited) 1mo
AnnCrystal P.S. maybe go with a friend, kinda lonely...at least my location was.

Also, there were a couple of individual guys walking around with mobiles, no baskets, and seemingly not buying anything?? They seemed to be observing people more than merchandise...actually, I'm noticing this more and more all around town.

Be safe 🙏💝.
(edited) 1mo
DogMomIrene I had not considered the dollar stores. I‘m such a homebody. A homebody who walks her dogs to get out of the house on the regular. But we have one close by so I‘ll check them out. 1mo
DogMomIrene @AnnCrystal I appreciate your concern. We live on Prince Edward Island, which is Canada‘s smallest province. We‘re in a safe area. We bought our house from a woman who never locked her doors. We chose to move to 🇨🇦 in part to be safer. I‘ve lived in several large US cities, so “Constant Vigilance” has always been a motto. I‘ve noticed a few things here that raise my level of concern, but are easily avoidable. We‘re really fortunate. Stay safe💜 (edited) 1mo
AnnCrystal @DogMomIrene 😍that sounds whimsical 💝💝💝 ☺️👍📚💝. 1mo

Graphic novels really are not my favorite thing to read but I enjoyed the storyline in this book. The illustrations in this book are also very good, and I love how the robot is drawn. This was definitely a cute book that I would recommend to students.

This book is entertaining for readers as it tells the story of a robot trying to find its place in nature as it raises a young gosling. There is lots of action and surprises as the robot learns what it is like to care for and love a living creature. It is a little bit of a slow read at the beginning, but The Wild Robot is overall a great book.

I also started reading this one cause I also want to watch the film. 😃🙌 So far the writing is definitely for children. It‘s super easy, sweet & repetitive. A nice surprise (since I tend to buy books by its cover sometimes 🤷🏽‍♀️🙈), is that the robot is a female. 😊 I‘m so happy the book doesn‘t have the darn Netflix sticker or a movie tie-in cover! 😮‍💨🙌💃

I really loved this middlegrade story. A robot named Roz winds up on an island & learns to adapt to her environment & befriend the local wildlife population. She makes herself a home & a community. I thought this was a great exploration of wildlife & nature from a unique perspective. I can't wait to continue Roz's story in the next installment & I'm looking forward to seeing how the film adaptation turns out

This is a cute little novel about a robot, Roz, washing ashore an island and learns to be wild. She learns from watching the animals, slowly learning their language. Heartbreaking at points, as the story takes no prisoners with reality. Animals die; frozen in winter and shot by hunters. It‘s a reality of life, and it is crafted sensitively. Liked how she raises a gosling as her own son. Wonderful connection. The ending surprised me.

Such a sweet story! 💚

This MG book about a robot who becomes a parent to a goose was adventurous and heartfelt. It explores how humans and climate change are both altering the natural world, but it does so in a very accessible way to younger readers.

I'll admit though, the end got a little futuristic by comparison to the rest, and now I'm curious to see what unfolds in the next book.

The illustrations were also lovely.

I've been reading this with the kids at bedtime for a couple months. We maxed out our renewals at tbe library because we only read a few pages a night after a few picture books. Nina cried when I told her it would have to go back to the library soon, because she wanted to "keep reading it forever." So naturally I bought a copy to keep ? I think its safe to say they loved it! #raisingreaders

“Hello, I‘m Rozzum unit 7134, but you may call me Roz.”
Roz awakes (after curious otters push the button on the back of her head) to find she is on an island. She doesn‘t know where she is from, but begins to explore and learn. Initially the animals distrust Roz, but through kindness she makes friends. She finds family and a home in the wild, until a past she is unaware of catches up to her.

These were so enjoyable! 💗

After hearing me praise this novel, my children asked me to read it aloud to them, which gave me a chance to notice this: "shimmied" where it should be "shinnied." *sigh* Still a good book and very fun to read aloud, just diminished a little in my eyes.

ImperfectCJ Uh-oh...is this a spoiler? I am so bad at recognizing when something's a spoiler, so someone please let me know if I should edit the post to indicate spoileriness. 5y
Butterfinger No I don't think it is a spoiler, but I say "shimmy" for climbing down. Is it a regional thing, do you think? 5y
violabrain I also say “shimmy.” I just looked up both words and the definition of “shinny” is: “another word for shimmy“. So it seems that shimmy is the predominant word. 5y
See All 24 Comments
ImperfectCJ @Butterfinger Not regional, just a common misuse. I think it's one of those that's shifting meaning because of usage, like "nonplussed" and "begging the question." Merriam-Webster even lists shinny as a possible definition of shimmy, so I know I'm fighting a losing battle. :-) https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/shimmy 5y
ImperfectCJ @violabrain Not according to M-W: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/shinny Probably depends on the source. 5y
Butterfinger @ImperfectCJ @violabrain it reminds me of Shania Twain's song Any Man of Mine. You got to shimmy, shake, make the earth quake. 😜 Don't you love the evolution of words? 5y
Sunraven I think I agree with Jan Freeman (at Throw Grammar From the Train)‘s idea that this is basically a dog-whistle edit, but that‘s okay, it gives me a rare chance to use the term “dog-whistle edit.” 😆 5y
ImperfectCJ @Sunraven Well, I think that the difference in meaning makes it more significant than dog-whistle editing, but I can see the argument. As Abe Simpson says, "My car gets 40 rods to the hogshead, and that's the way I likes it." ? 5y
Sunraven My understanding of dog-whistle edits is that they can arguably be based on real distinctions, but ones that the general population doesn‘t make, so that the correction doesn‘t increase readability for a large majority of readers. In this case the distinction seems as if it might even decrease readability and add mild confusion, which to my copy editor brain makes it undesirable, but even among copy editors I was considered odd, so, y‘know. 😉 5y
TEArificbooks I use shimmied. I never heard of shinnied. Also the teacher in me says shimmied demonstrates the narrators voice therefore shimmied is the best choice for the word. 5y
ImperfectCJ @Sunraven I think we're using the same definition of dog-whistle editing just with a different threshold. I think of "nauseated" vs "nauseous"...very slight distinction while shinny and shimmy have two distinct meanings (climbing up or down vertically with the use of arms and legs vs a frenetic dancing). Or had until people started combining them. If I were copy editing, I'd note it then let the author choose which to use. I just like shinny. :-) 5y
ImperfectCJ @Sunraven And I keep saying dog-whistle editing instead of dog-whistle edits, which makes me sound like an idiot, but I think you know what I mean. Kind of like when Peter Brown uses "shimmied" here. Meaning is clear, word choice is inaccurate. Or at least imprecise. Darned language. 5y
Sunraven It‘s true, it‘s pretty much my threshold settings for all editing judgements that make me into an oddball. 😁 And if I were editing someone‘s work and they were set on shinny, I‘d absolutely let them have it their way, since it seems like a relatively minor issue. Many other delicious fish await frying. 😆 5y
Sunraven And in my book (Does that count as a pun here? 🤔), language is messy, and using it messily doesn‘t make anyone look like an idiot, so no worries! It‘s the reasoning behind the language that makes me give people the side-eye, personally. And honestly? I like seeing a little mess. Perfection is an (IMO unnecessarily) exhausting standard to chase. 😉 (edited) 5y
ImperfectCJ @Sunraven Messy language can be quite nice, and very useful. My hanging onto "proper" usage makes it tough for me to write realistic dialogue (that and a lack of anything interesting for my characters to say). I will note, too, that it's been a long time since I copy edited professionally, so I might have a little pent-up pedantry. Also, "in my book" definitely counts as a pun. ? 5y
Sunraven My personal pun-ometer has always been calibrated just as oddly as my editing judgement thresholds, although maybe it‘s off in the opposite direction. 😆

And lots of us of the editorly persuasion go through pedantic phases, don‘t we? I had an unusually short one, for some reason — annnd now I suddenly have a handful of offbeatish ideas for writerly flexibility exercises. Haha ... oh, man.

Litsy discussions are good. 😉
5y
ImperfectCJ @Sunraven "Litsy discussions are good." Agreed. Way better than Facebook discussions, and more likely to find language appreciators here! I ❤️ puns, but I find myself using them cautiously. Wordplay doesn't always go over well and often elicits blank stares outside of wordy circles. I would be interested in learning more about your ideas for writerly flexibility exercises... 5y
ljuliel Shimmy is the correct term. Shinny means the same thing. No difference. 5y
Clare-Dragonfly Interesting. I‘ve heard of the word “shinny,” but never used it. When I read that sentence I figured she was moving down the tree by moving quickly back and forth! 5y
LiteraryinPA I‘ve always heard it as shimmy! 5y
ImperfectCJ @ljuliel Being used like they mean the same thing and meaning the same thing aren't the same thing. I respect his right to use this word and through repeated misuse, shimmy has become an accepted definition of shinny, but there is still a difference in dictionary meaning (see Merriam-Webster definition of both). 5y
ImperfectCJ @mdm139 There are definitely good arguments in favor of his use of the word. It's still a different word, though. :-) 5y
ImperfectCJ @LiteraryinLititz Yep, I think the similar sound of the words has facilitated the merger of their meanings. I'm still attached to shinny, though. :-) (edited) 5y
Sunraven I think years of practice has given me something of an immunity to blank stares. 😆 (And I‘ve gotten worse than blank stares, so they don‘t seem too bad.) I do try not to bore my audience, at least. 😁

Still thinking about those flexibility exercises! I was just talking about them an hour or so ago. Seriously considering doing something with that crazy idea, and it‘s all thanks to the superior conversational skills of Littens, haha!
