This is a re-telling of Romeo and Juliet with beautiful magical realism elements and writing. I loved the best friend relationship between June and Hannah and the banter between June and Saul (a lá Dawson‘s Creek - I‘m a sucker for it). The story lost me a little in the second half, but the themes of grief, healing, truth, and letting go are strong. Henry manages to create a sweet coming of age story without leaning on the saccharine. 3⭐️

Another great read from Emily Henry, I just love wrapping myself up in her books, a cup of tea a scented candle and my day is perfect. The way Emily writes her story lines, her characters is just pure writing magic. This book was from her earlier writings and contains magical elements along with contemporary writing and it was a perfect blend for me. I couldn't get enough of all the Junes.⭐⭐⭐⭐ #amillionjunes #emilyhenry #tea_sipping_bookworm

Finally read this book that has been on my TBR list since it was published. Fantastic prose and I loved the characters of June and Saul. A Romeo and Juliet retelling with a side of magic is just the type of story I enjoy. 4.5⭐️

This my favorite line so far in A Million Junes by Emily Henry, my current read. So romantic and elegantly written! It just makes my heart skip a bit. Henry has this gift/way with words than I love. She has become one of my favorite authors.

This book is not my cup of tea... I really wanted to like this novel because it was written by Emily Henry, but I‘m just not a fan of magic realism. Sad, weird, very repetitive...

definitely prefer Emily‘s newer books to this one but this one is still really good. A Romeo & Juliet retelling with magical aspects. Saul & June meet after years of being kept apart by their rival families & once they do, it sets off a chain reaction of magical moments that lead to them uncovering the truth of their families tangled & tragic history. Can they break the curse together? Or are they destined to lose each other?

Book 105

I listened to A Million Junes, a rom-com-esque, coming-of-age, realistic fantasy story about June, an 18 year-old living in her magical, ancestral home. Being raised on stories about how her neighbors have ruined the lives of generations of her family, she has been forbidden to interact with them.

MelKelsey Now that she's met Saul, her 20 year-old, attractive neighbor, she is determined to ascertain fact from the fiction in her now-deceased father's stories. Henry is a good storyteller and writes compelling characters and good dialogue. A Million Junes, wasn't my favorite novel by the author, but it was engaging and enjoyable. 4 🌟s 2y

This was borderline Pan/So-So. The first half was lighter on the magical realism and focused a bit more on the relationships June had with her BFF Hannah, who I loved, and her crush, Saul, who also happens to be the son of her family's arch-nemesis family. Did I mention this is a Romeo & Juliet retelling? Admittedly, I am not a huge fan of magical realism & this was a glaring example of why. A few details/reasonings didn't come full circle ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick leaving me with questions. Other parts were a little too neat, telling me instead of showing me. If this was my first book by Emily Henry, I'd say it was also my last. However, I loved People We Meet on Vacation so I'll give her contemporary romances a second chance to WOW me.

June turned out to be a better reading month than expected. I read 16 books and 5358 pages (several of which were on the go previously), including eight nonfiction. Only got one author of color, though. And despite what seemed to be an attempt not to get any bingos, I did end up with two! #BookSpinBingo

I enjoyed the first half of this book. I thought the characters and story line were fine, and the magical bits added interest. Then the whole thing derailed. The magic became totally weird, and the plot (such as it was) was impossible to follow. I honestly wondered if it had been written under the influence of something! 🤣

However, reading it with @TheBookHippie and the #SundayBuddyRead crew still made it a fun experience!

I wanted to like this book but it seemed to go off in so many directions that the beauty of the words on loss & grief got buried in pink feathers & black clouds. I like YA & like magical realism, I‘m not a fan of Romeo & Juliet & apparently II don‘t like it when the three are mashed together.🤷🏻‍♀️

Yikes. This was a convoluted mess. There was very little about the story that resembled Romeo & Juliet. It read like a young adult novel with a few “edgy“ terms thrown in to make it seem less PG, I guess? I had fun reading it along with the group. Misery loves company. 😉

Phew. We‘re done with this read. My apologies this last section just pissed me off. Too much underlying religiosity and it just irritated my spirit . Beside that I just don‘t think it‘s good read. I don‘t see Romeo and Juliet at all. Could be me. I could be too old for the read! Thoughts?

My apologies- I was hoping especially with all the loving of her current books that this would be good.

BooksNBowls Yeah I love Emily Henry but this book doesn‘t sound anything like her or her other books. It‘s not horrible writing, just a questionable plot lmao. The family feud is the only R&J theme I can find. 2y
TheBookHippie @BooksNBowls the whole thing is bonkers to me. It isn‘t her first book. I think it‘s the second one but phew it‘s a mess. 2y
vlwelser Don't apologize. You're bound to find a dud every now and then. And I like that you don't vet them in advance. They're as much of a surprise to you as the rest of us. My only burning question is how in the world did this end up as your botm selection? 2y

mollyrotondo @Sparklemn 😂 it‘s always fun talking about a book with this group even when you yourself don‘t like it. This one was just bleh for me. I will continue to say the tagged book was the worst though lol I‘m looking forward to July! 2y
thegreensofa This was my first read too with the group. But I got to say I loved hating this together. I thought in the beginning I was the only outsider on that ! I don‘t think I am going to read another Emily Henry I have given her a couple of goes now, she‘s not for me! 🫠 2y
TheBookHippie @thegreensofa 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ Oy. Well, at least you enjoyed loathing it with us! Generally we like or love some part of the read. Not so with this book! I hope you join us again we really do enjoy our Sundays! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I really only picked this up for the buddy read. I liked the budding romance parts between Saul & June and the friendship between Hannah & June more than the weird feud, white whisps, ghosts, etc. The magical realism parts I could do without and I just want to talk to the publisher and editor who didn't ask enough questions of Emily Henry. I enjoyed her People We Meet on Vacation, so I snagged her new one for $3 on Kindle. I'll give it a go. 2y

On grief -Letting go is not forgetting -thoughts ?

What do you think of Junes dads goodbye letter ?

vlwelser Lol. I felt like it was unnecessary. I was already basically done with the story by then. It doesn't really add anything. 2y
AmyG Maybe the letter was to tie up the ending for the people who didn‘t know wtf was going on? 2y
TheBookHippie @AmyG HAD TO BE! Maybe she was telling herself.......what a mess this book was. 2y
See All 7 Comments
Sparklemn I agree that the letter was unnecessary. But I will confess to tearing up a bit when I read it. 😳😐 2y
DebinHawaii The letter helped June with more closure I guess? I only skimmed the letter last night & I don‘t remember what it said! 2y
mollyrotondo I didn‘t need the letter either. It did seem like a wrap up of events. The whole problem was unnecessary if her father and mother only talked to her about this family issue. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Sparklemn I teared up a little, too. I was happy that there was a little something from the past that bubbled up to the now to help June with her grief. I didn't need it, but she did, apparently. I still don't know why her parents shielded her from everything and why mom continued to do so. June is 18. She should've heard the truth a few years ago, at least. 2y

AmyG I didn‘t pick up on muchof anything. I skimmed the whole book. Hahahahaha….I want all that time back! 2y
TheBookHippie @AmyG I WANT IT BACK !!! seriously yuk. 2y
Sparklemn I didn‘t catch the three days and Easter connection but the Garden of Eden was easy for me to spot. Much more Adam and Eve than Romeo and Juliet. Blech. 2y
DebinHawaii Hmm… interesting. I didn‘t make the connection but I also feel the the author was throwing in a bunch of random ideas, characters & things to see what “stuck” but unfortunately nothing did & it became a hot mess. 2y
TheBookHippie @Sparklemn RIGHT? Yuk. 2y
mollyrotondo @Sparklemn seriously! The publishers said R&J probably because they were afraid to say something biblical for teens but that‘s totally what this was describing. A baptism will save you and you‘ll rise again in three days. And honestly that‘s too high and mighty of the author for a story like this. The family needed to talk and forgive and let go. Not be baptized 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo yup … 🤬😤 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm such a bad former Catholic - I didn't pick up on any of that. Like the others, by the fourth quarter, I was skimming along, hoping to catch something that would make it all make sense. Was Romeo & Juliet a retelling of Adam & Eve? Are there scrolls or parchments to corroborate that theory? 2y

Memory, all memory is altered.
There is the truth- how you see it -how someone else sees it- where is it in this story and how did it affect the end?

Issa hiding Jack II from his parents fighting ..
TELLING Jack she loves him even if Jack I forgot how to?!

So she drowns .. and the story is Abe murdered Issa?

The coywolves explanation ?
👀🙈

A lot. It‘s a lot. Is she trying to show generational sin?

BooksNBowls Yes perspective is everything. I still don‘t understand the coywolves or the shoes thing did I miss that part 2y

Read4life Ugh! So much and yet so little that really makes sense. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 🤣🤣🤣🤣 2y
TheBookHippie @Read4life so lost on the point of it all. 2y
AmyG I read this to finish, not to understand. This way of understanding the past, of the truth, of breaking barriers just didn‘t work for me. 2y
Sparklemn I skimmed most of the part after she got to the falls. It was such a mess. I kept thinking that maybe if I cared enough to read it closely, it would make sense. But I doubt it. (edited) 2y
TheBookHippie @Sparklemn NOPE I REREAD and NOPE. What a waste of my time. OY. 2y
DebinHawaii @AmyG So true—I wanted to finish mainly to be done with it. I had faint hopes that the author would pull it together in the end but that didn‘t happen. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
mollyrotondo So wait Abe did kill Issa? Or thought one of the Jacks (the angry one) was responsible for her death? I mean I feel like secrets is this family‘s problem. Secrets and holding anger. Not necessarily miss remembering memory. The main problem was the family not talking about it and holding grudges for something no one even talked about. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This was a mess. Did they ever get their shoes back from the coywolves or do these small-town folks just buy new shoes every other day?! I am still very hung up on these stupid details, but why couldn't the coywolves just bring the shoes back once they were done crossing over? The families were already mad at each other, so they took every tiny opportunity to hold that grudge and believe the worst in the others. Is there NO ONE ELSE around ever? 2y

The teacher.

June says …to be my mother you‘d have to get pregnant at 4 years old OOF
How out of line is this teacher ?!
Why this story line?

BooksNBowls Hated the teacher, she‘s extremely out of line, creepy if not borderline stalkerish. 2y
TheBookHippie @BooksNBowls RIGHT?! Disturbing on so many levels … 2y
BooksNBowls @TheBookHippie when she told her mom about everything I was like oh no this lady is crazy jealous of a teenager like what the heck 2y
See All 17 Comments
vlwelser So creepy. Not even sure why this character is in the book. 2y
Read4life @vlwelser Exactly! This character was so unnecessary. I get that June needed to think of a different future but this teacher was really obnoxious. Again, I just find so much of this book to be too much. 2y
AmyG @Read4life I also wondered why she was in the story. I felt she overstepped her bounds with June. 2y
DebinHawaii Yes, definite overstep of bounds in so many ways. 2y
mollyrotondo There was no need for the teacher. June didn‘t actually gain anything from her. Her friend going to college and learning the truth of her family is enough to help her realize it‘s okay to leave town and explore. The teacher was way too involved with a teenage student for creepy jealous reasons. No point. 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo the only thing I can think of is this IS HOW teachers are at the parochial schools here and the college the writer went to. You‘re entire life is not private and they can and will punish you and tell your parents… 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie well that‘s scary in itself. No way for kids to be themselves. This world gets scarier and scarier. 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo it‘s always been that way. That‘s the scary part. 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I find it interesting there‘s very little about her personal life anywhere. 2y
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie so I totally agree with this girl lol Vacation‘s romance plot line is predictable and is definitely not the focus. And this girl was a riot saying Beach Read doesn‘t even take place on a beach lol false marketing. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Ultimately, I can't find a good reason why De Geest needed to be so young and have known/dated Saul on a personal level. This very well would've been better as a woman in her 40s who sees the talent and urges June that she's seen her share of Saul-like boys, and that June can't stay put for a boy. Done. Fixed it. 100% less creepy. It also perpetuates that a girl will give it all up for the love of a boy. I mean, that had better be one magic D. 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick It is pure parochial school nonsense it is so my town I almost threw up. 2y

Feathers - Issa ghost
Nameless - Abe
Two ghosts: Vengeance And Grace
Thoughts ?

Is their an underlining theme there?
Is this as ridiculous as it is to me 🤦🏻‍♀️

BooksNBowls I had trouble keeping all the different Jacks straight tbh. The ending just seemed a little convoluted for like such a simple solution for our main characters. 2y
TheBookHippie @BooksNBowls convoluted is the correct word!!! 2y
vlwelser @BooksNBowls 💯 convoluted is a perfect description 2y
See All 9 Comments
DebinHawaii @BooksNBowls Yes, all the Jacks, even numbered were confusing as hell. And convoluted is a great description of the ending & really the entire book. 2y
mollyrotondo @BooksNBowls agree completely. I couldn‘t keep up with the Jacks and I just didn‘t understand why Abe would have turned into a vengeful ghost since he wasn‘t initially the bad one. I just didn‘t think it made complete sense. I also skimmed this last section so I might have missed why this might have made sense lol 2y
thegreensofa I can only say that my eyes are now stuck to the back of my skull from rolling them sooo much during reading! 🙄🤪 2y
TheBookHippie @thegreensofa SERIOUSLY !!! So true! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm more concerned about the Feather's real name being Maolissa than the ghosts. LOL Having Nameless the Vengeful being Abe...I guess I get it, having been beaten to a pulp and all, but why would he haunt his own family? This didn't make sense to me. 2y

And I know everyone loves her contemporary romances 😏 I‘m not a fan of that genre so I‘m not interested if reading more 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo HA. I am never reading this author again. YUK. No. just no. And I agree I think it is the underlying alt right Michigan religionese that's giving me ptsd OY VEY....... The Picoult was worse.....which that was my first and last of hers! 2y
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie I wonder if she writes the alt right stuff for teens. I don‘t remember coming across that kind of stuff in People we Meet on Vacation. I didn‘t like that book but I didn‘t notice any alt right stuff like I did in this one. Maybe the publisher told her to take that out of her contemporary romances 🤔 I read a decent Picoult for another book club and even though I still had problems with it I gave it credit but that last one 👎 nope. 2y
Sparklemn I do like magical realism and was excited for the Shakespeare retelling. YA with random boner comments thrown in? No no no. 2y
TheBookHippie @Sparklemn NO NO NO NO NO.......ugh........I am so very disappointed. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm just getting a subtle conservative vibe, unlike the Narnia books...THOSE made me roll my eyes hard. I was curious who published this one since it's an earlier Emily Henry novel that really wasn't on my radar. It's PRH imprint Razorbill which “is committed to taking risks and exploring new ways to tell stories.“ I'll say this one sure is a risk! FWIW, I read People We Meet on Vacation last year and actually really enjoyed it. 2y

Feathers laughing at me in the sky…

Think the boner talk and drinking is necessary for the story?

What do you think of the coy dogs?

Have you pieced the story together?

How does it end?

AmyG Honestly, I would guess they both die? Not the book for me. I just want to finish and move onto the July book. 🤣 2y
vlwelser I'm with @AmyG already looking forward to the next one. 2y
TheBookHippie @AmyG @vlwelser 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 for July!!!! Oy vey. Literally! 2y
See All 9 Comments
DebinHawaii I have no clue but I don‘t know if the author has it set up to kill them… 2y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii possibility I destroy the book though 🤣😬🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
mollyrotondo I feel like that stuff was just thrown in to sound cool and hip for teens 😆 not necessary at all. I don‘t think the author did a good job leading them to their deaths because there wasn‘t enough foreshadowing to that conclusion other than a curse on the family which is lame. R&J weren‘t cursed. I hope they die only because it would be better than a quick forgive and forget wrap up. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick My brother went to high school in New Hampshire in the late '90s. It was rather remote, so all there was to do was drink & have sex. Five Fingers seems remote, so maybe the same holds true, though the boner line didn't feel very “Saul“. I haven't figured out what's up with the coydogs or wolves, or whatever they are. That is truly all I really care about at this point. What's with the SHOES?! 2y

So IF this is Romeo and Juliet did it happen already or is it going to happen?? Is this leading up to it or the result of it?

AmyG I think they die in the falls. And the families come together realizing that their feud is stupid. 2y
vlwelser Well feathers and nameless could be the original pair and the rest is the destruction. This book is ridiculous. 2y
DebinHawaii I feel like it happened already with the couple from before & that June & Saul will survive the falls & end the “curse” & feud but at this point—it‘s anyone‘s guess. 2y
See All 10 Comments
Read4life I agree with @DebinHawaii that the two from the falls are an Angert & O‘Donnell. I think Saul saying the feud and curse are bigger than cherries and land issues is correct. I think feathers and nameless need to be freed or exorcised to break the curse. It‘s all just a bit much. 2y
TheBookHippie @Read4life I agree and people are raving about this author literally everywhere 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
mollyrotondo It could go either way honestly. The angert and O‘Donnell from long ago could be the start of the feud and Saul and June could be the R&J characters who are kept a part and then ultimately die because of the feud. Their death breaks the curse and makes both families come together. Or R&J already happened and Saul and June have to see the truth of what happened and forgive. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Sparklemn @TheBookHippie Yikes🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Sparklemn @mollyrotondo I think it's option 2 --> R&J already happened. But not sure I care either way. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think it already happened, and maybe there will be something in the present where they “die“ but come back. However, if they truly die (I'm not betting on it though), it might make the end a bit more interesting. At this point I just really want to know about the shoe-stealing coywolves. 2y

What is nameless?

So WHO IS FEATHERS? THE GIRL?

Is it good/evil OR two dead people one good one bad?

AmyG I have no idea. And sadly, I don‘t care enough to give this much thought. 2y
vlwelser @AmyG 💯 I legit don't even care. 2y
DebinHawaii I am lost but as @AmyG & @vlwelser I am not sure I care. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
See All 10 Comments
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I feel that too 💯💯 2y
vlwelser @DebinHawaii It'll be over soon. I would speed through it now but I have Snow Crash and it's about to expire on me. 2y
Read4life I think feathers and nameless are the Romeo & Juliet of the story and the couple from the memory at the falls. Not sure what happened. Don‘t really care. 2y
mollyrotondo I think nameless is the kid who was killed probably at the falls but only manifesting because the Jack family holds a lot of guilt for having been involved somehow in the kid‘s death. I think nameless is a girl from Saul‘s family maybe? Not quite sure what her deal is. 2y
Sparklemn @AmyG 👍 😂 I don't care, either. I'm interested in seeing how other parts of the story play out, but Nameless and Feathers are a waste of ink. (edited) 2y
AmyG @Sparklemn It was a way of telling the past. Not for me. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Maybe they're the spirits of the cursed couple? I'm with @Read4Life here that I think Nameless was a victim and bitter about his death, but Feathers maybe knows it wasn't the fault of an Angert or O'Donnell and is trying to protect them/make them uncover the truth. 2y

CARVING ON THE TREE.

The girl in the woods.

Did you see what I see asked Saul
I saw love said June
True?
OR was it something else?

June & Saul thoughts?

AmyG They are young, they have feeings toward the other and they have all the family nonsense. And-it‘s a Romeo and Juliet re-telling. 2y
vlwelser Crap like this gives Romeo and Juliet a bad rep. Chloe Gong is the queen and everyone else is a peasant. 2y
DebinHawaii @vlwelser Hah! So right! 🤣🤣🤣 2y

DebinHawaii Thinking that the couple is the Romeo & Juliet of the story but who knows?!?! 2y
vlwelser @DebinHawaii I was mostly hoping to give our fearless leader a laugh but I will defend my statement. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser seriously !!!! This is not R & J 2y
mollyrotondo I thought that part was lame and her saying this made no sense to me. I sometimes think June sees things like her father too much. Gives too much magic to a moment when something more serious is going on. Someone died and someone was blamed for it for generations. Isn‘t that something important to clear up? I don‘t know. The love story takes a back seat when death is involved. 2y
Sparklemn @mollyrotondo Agree the death should come first. 2y
Sparklemn And what about the lack of curiosity by June and Saul? When you saw O'Donnell + Angert carved into the tree, wouldn't your first instinct be to ask your families what the heck that was all about?
2y
TheBookHippie @Sparklemn RIGHT? WHY do these people NOT ASK hey why is that carved in the tree????? 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Reading is fundamental, kids! Ugh. This was dumb. Like “Oh, how precious. Our last names are carved into this tree. Let's make moony faces at each other while these ominous wisps just wiggle and dance around us in the moonlight.“ These are not 18 & 20 year old young adults. This section made me take this from a low-pick to a pass. Final section has to dazzle me to bump it up. 2y

Feathers shows June a scene of Jack II and Jack III Jack II asking the dark thing. Also Jack II wandered as well…..

A curse? Mental illness? Paying for a “sin” for generations ? Guesses????

AmyG I just saw it as a metaphor for generational trauma etc. 2y
vlwelser This is all a little too out there for my brain. I'm just going with it. 2y
DebinHawaii I was hoping this section would tie things together but I felt that it was really all over the place. I‘m not sure what‘s going on.🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
See All 6 Comments
mollyrotondo @DebinHawaii I agree. I thought we were going to get a clear picture of what went on in the past but instead we added more people to the family history that were never previously mentioned and definitely not sure who was involved in one of the kids‘ deaths (?) and why and how. It got more confusing. I don‘t think it‘s a curse. I think it‘s more like superstition and guilt. Nameless is guilt. Not sure why feathers is there. 2y
Sparklemn @debinhawaii @mollyrotondo I agree, too, that this was all over the place. It's a mess. Regarding the curse, other than June losing her dad...which is AWFUL...NOT trying to minimize this in any way...why does this mean she's cursed? As sad as it is, parents die. The rest of her life seems very blessed -- caring parents, siblings, world's greatest best friend, comfortable house. What am I missing? 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick These vignettes of previous Jacks is not made any better when I have to struggle to differentiate which generation I'm seeing now. I just don't care enough about it to make notes or think too hard. Does the curse kick in when you have a child, perhaps? As @Sparklemn mentioned, she seems rather lucky, other than the dad disappearing, but that felt like his curse. Like you can't have too many in town at one time? This was all to ethereal for me. 2y

The teacher explaining to June to not let high school love keep her from going college?

Appropriate ?

AmyG I found this entire teacher and her relationship to Saul and June-weird and immature. 2y
vlwelser This whole thing gave me the creeps. And the teacher is somewhat inappropriate. The fear that she'll give June a bad grade seemed real. 2y
DebinHawaii Yeah, this teacher thing is weird & inappropriate. The teacher does seem very immature. I don‘t blame June for questioning whether or not she can get a fair shake in her class. I would question any “advice” from this woman. 2y
See All 6 Comments
mollyrotondo Definitely don‘t like this teacher. It‘s not appropriate for her to be talking about her past relationships with a student and then tell that student to ditch the guy she herself used to date. It‘s all strange. And I wondered how old is this teacher? Could she be a high school teacher and only be like 24? The age differences seem too close to be realistic 2y
Sparklemn The teacher crossed the line when she told June that Saul would be moving on. What business is it of hers? I'd be worried about my grade, too, if I were June. The teacher doesn't appear to be able to keep her professional and personal opinions separate. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Ms de Geest is shady! I think she wants Saul back. She finds June talented, but maybe stunted by her life in Five Fingers. Should she offer vague suggestions that college is a great time to explore what else is out there? Sure. Should she be talking about her past relationship with Saul to his new gf, who is a student in your class, or giving out advice? Absolutely f*(%ing not. Is she having inappropraite cats with other students, or just June? 2y

Hannah explaining to June that she is Hannahs first love. What do you think about Hannah wanting to leave? Also them being dates to their prom?

Hannah saying “my favorite parts of life are things I didn‘t know I wanted‘ WHAT TEEN TALKS LIKE THIS?

I do enjoy their friendship- is it realistic ? Would a teen identify with it?

AmyG I think being dates to their own prom was to get around June not being able to bring Saul. I do think there are friendships that close so it didn‘t seem odd to me. Just sort of a “dream” friendship. (edited) 2y
vlwelser I think it's cute. Hannah might be my favorite. 2y
DebinHawaii I like their friendship much more than the romance in the book. Completely realistic? No. But certainly enjoyable. 2y
See All 8 Comments
mollyrotondo Teens definitely only talked like this in ‘90s teen shows on the WB. But no real teen talks like that lol there friendship is nice and friends should be going together to prom. Prom should be more about your friends than about dates. I‘m glad Hannah wants to leave for school because it‘s normal to want to leave to learn something new somewhere new so you can grow as a person. I‘m glad she isn‘t staying behind because of June. 2y
Sparklemn I love that they went to prom as each other's dates but agree that this seems like more of a “dream“ friendship. @Amyg

@mollyrotondo LOL at your comment about the '90s teen shows..Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill, etc. Loved the angst! I'm also glad that Hannah isn't basing her college choice on geography. They can keep in touch. And hopefully June will be moving on, too!
2y
mollyrotondo @Sparklemn this book just reminds me so much of an old WB show but trying to throw magic into it. I enjoyed those old shows more lol 2y
Sparklemn @mollyrotondo I agree! I was trying to figure out what they reminded me of, too. You nailed it! 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Like @vlwelser Hannah is my favorite, too. There are times I think their friendship feels realistic and then something is said that makes me think they're 40 and reminiscing 'back in the day'. I did like that she likened June to being her first love, since they seem to love each other and aren't related. So many girls in my high school said I love you to their friends like it was their last day on earth. Prom dates, though? It was a ruse! 2y

“This is how grief works it watches it waits it hollows you out again and again….”
Good statement on grief.
IS this story truly about grief?

Since this is YA think it would be helpful to a grieving teen?

AmyG It is about grief but also about truth, generational “stuff”, acceptance, family secrets. It‘s not easy to learn that what you have thought all along isn‘t the truth. I would think it‘s good for a young person…but I donmt just see it about grief. 2y
vlwelser It's very insightful about what it feels like to deal with other people while you're grieving. But I wouldn't exactly hand this to a teen that was grieving a parent or sibling. 2y
DebinHawaii Although not just about grief, I can really relate to how grief is portrayed in it. I lost my father at a much older age than June but some of the quotes on grief I have highlighted because they are so on point for me. I‘ll have to finish before I can decide on whether I‘d give it to a grieving teen or adult though. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
See All 7 Comments
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii I feel the same way about the grief quotes! 2y
DebinHawaii @TheBookHippie Yes it feels somewhat wrong to say the grief quotes are the best part of the book.😆 2y
mollyrotondo It‘s definitely more about grief than anything magical or even Romeo and Juliet related. June is grieving her father and won‘t really let herself move on like pursuing college. She identifies with her father and wants to please her father at the cost of her own future. This book seems to want to say it‘s okay to move forward. I‘m not sure I‘d give this book to a grieving teen. There‘s probably better written teen grief books. 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick There's grief in here, but also magical wisps and shoe-stealing coywolves so I wouldn't exactly recommend it specifically for the grief element. There are a few nice qoutes in here that I highlighted, so maybe I'd just share those. June really needs to see the truth about the family fued so she can move on and do what she wants to do and stop with this Jack O'Donnell personification. Also, I doubt we'd get all this if June was a boy named Jack. 2y

TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I've only read People We Meet on Vacation and I really enjoyed it. Elements of the relationship between the MCs felt familiar to me so I may be biased. This one is currently so-so but if the family history starts coming together, it could be a pick. 2y
Read4life This is the first book I‘ve read by her. I will give Book Lovers a try. I do enjoy YA but this is only so-so for me. Honestly, if it weren‘t for this group read, I probably would have bailed early on. 2y
DebinHawaii I have not read any of her books although I have People We Meet on Vacation in my Kindle TBR& I have a hold on Book Lovers at the library. I liked this week‘s section better than the first. Still not a favorite but not at the point of “loathe” yet! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y

Side note: in conservative Michigan Shauna Niequist is very very popular. The character Niequist (Steven)

mollyrotondo Oh the boy who is competing for highest GPA in the school. I mean he‘s not necessarily a well liked character in the story. 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo right but mentioning it is like PTSD for me 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️ there‘s a lot of phrasing in this book that is alt right but unless you live here and suffered from it I can‘t imagine you‘d catch it. 2y
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie oh I totally get it. And I‘ve also picked up on certain phrasings as well that made me go hmmm. It‘s another reason why I‘m just not interested in reading anything else by this author. 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo me either. Goodness. 😝 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I never heard of that lady so I didn't think of any connection. I get that June & Hannah didn't like him because he's Hannah's salutorian competitor, but he doesn't seem awful. I did like that he told June not to drop the class, knowing she wasn't going to write trite stories. 2y
DebinHawaii Hmm… interesting. I haven‘t picked up on any of that. I must be skimming over the phrasing! 😆 2y
Sparklemn @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I don't think he seems awful, either. If this were a traditional teen romance, I'd say that they were setting him up to be someone who's into June but too shy to say anything. I doubt that's where this is going, though. Who knows??!! 2y
Sparklemn @DebinHawaii Same. Now I'll know to look for this type of language as I read on. 2y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii it‘s really subtle and I wondered if you didn‘t know if you‘d even catch it. @mollyrotondo makes me feel better that I‘ve not lost my mind… 😜 @Sparklemn I‘ll be interested if there is more as we read on and if you guys can see it too. 2y

The shoes the vision
Saul & June
The sick sister vision
They are both grieving still.

Nameless was watching or killing Junes dad and then he died…it‘s by Saul‘s sister too.
Death? Is it death? This was my thought then chapter 17 June thinks it too.
Feathers is it protecting June?

Barefoot ?
If you want to break the veil you have to be barefoot ?

More time with the people you love who have passed?
What would be enough time ?

vlwelser Yeah. So imo this book is ridiculous. 2y
AmyG I SOMETIMES like magical realism. Not this time. 2y
mollyrotondo @vlwelser 😂 🤣 2y
See All 10 Comments
mollyrotondo I‘m assuming Nameless is death and I guess feathers is trying to protect June but I really don‘t know the significance of feathers honestly. I don‘t get the bit about the shoes or why coywolves would steal shoes. There‘s too much focus on teen drama instead of building this world on June‘s property 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick How often is this family buying new shoes?! I can't get over the coywolves stealing them and not bringing them back. We're half way thru and I still have lots of questions and few answers. Is Nameless Death or Satan or karma or something else? Feathers seems protective or guardian angelic. I am not as invested in the magical realism portions. I'd rather have the new adult angst & more with Hannah. 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I agree with all that. 2y
Read4life @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I agree with you! Well said. 2y
DebinHawaii I am not seeing the point of Feathers as it seems like it mostly is described as seeming “sad” versus doing any protecting. I assume Nameless is death. The coy wolves & shoe thing is really bizarre & it just seems so accepted by everyone. I think I would invest in a bunch of cheap slippers (flip flops) if I lived there. 2y

The tattoo thing… thoughts?
The moms theory about them “and though we would never get tattoos it‘s none of our business that Mike did…”
A little condescending ? Judgmental ?

Why is this in the story?

vlwelser I have no idea why this is in the story. But maybe it shows that the mother isn't really that judgmental despite not wanting her babies to be covered in tattoos. 2y
AmyG Some people just have issues with tatoos. I see it more as a generational thing. 2y
mollyrotondo This was so judgmental and I don‘t understand why it‘s needed. I‘m not a huge fan of the mother. 2y
See All 13 Comments
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo tattooing is a sin up here in alt right religion world 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie ahh I see. Displaying artistic expression on your body is what God‘s worried about I guess 🤨 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo there‘s a Bible verse that specifically says so… it got said A LOT at parochial school..in Leviticus of course🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick If one of his tattoos doesn't come alive and solve the puzzle of what truly happened, this is pointless. Do I really need to know the mom's thoughts on tattoos? Nope but it is weirdly judgmental. If "Mike" is supposed to be a high school student, I could see that playing into why it could be problematic. How many 18 year old seniors have a bunch of tattoos? 2y

Junes rationalisation of how she refers to her step dad. Healthy ? Unique ?

What do you think of how her step dad is portrayed here?

vlwelser I like him. I think it's cute. The explanation of what she calls him and when felt unnecessary. 2y
AmyG I like him, too. He seems like a decent guy. I wonder if June feels that it is a betrayal to her father if she becomes close to him. I wonder if at the end they all become a more cohesive family (as June learns about her father). 2y
mollyrotondo I like him. He‘s not trying to replace anyone. He‘s just acting like a good person should. If anything the mom is acting a bit absent from June‘s life than I think she should. 2y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I like Toddy. Seems like he's caring & fun. I didn't need the explanation. Whether they are full or half-brothers, Toddy's "dad". But I call my grandmother different names, so I get the various monikers. I'm close in age to her younger sons & lived with her for years. To a few uncles, she's mom. If I'm with my brother, grandma, and etc. 2y
Read4life I agree with @mollyrotondo in that I feel like her mom isn‘t fully there. I like Toddy and think he‘s a good guy and good father. 2y
DebinHawaii I am fine with Toddy, it seems like he cares for June & about June. 2y
Sparklemn I'm just noticing that there is a lot of discussion about names and nicknames and where they came from - June, Toddy, even her brothers. I like to think that this has some broader meaning....but that may be wishful thinking. 2y
julieclair @Sparklemn Interesting point. I hadn't really thought about all the nicknames. 2y

Junes Mom
“Only in memory it looks shinier….”
&
“There are always at least two versions of everything- June I‘ve forgotten my own because I love your daddy‘s so much.”
AND THEN we see the real proposal..
June‘s reaction…”I‘m a lie”
The child who made mom stay when she should have left.
Not magic but haunted..

Thoughts on all this? Anyone else think the dad has some kind of mental illness? What is the mom trying to tell June?

vlwelser The poor mother. And she probably felt that she had to hide all of this. The loneliness. And I get the replacement husband situation now. And why June seems to be the only one still hung up on grief for the dad. 2y
AmyG Ahhhh, family secrets. There were many in my family. I get Junes anger. Noone likes not being told the truth. And her Mom felt she was doing the right thing by not telling June...what‘s the point as her father was dead....why ruin her memories if him???? And yeah, her Dad had some serious “issues”. 2y
mollyrotondo I definitely think the dad had mental health issues. The lies just make me not like the father but if he‘s mentally Ill in some way then I shouldn‘t hate him but lies don‘t help anyone. I agree @AmyG that the mother didn‘t want to ruin June‘s memory of her father since he‘s dead now. But still. Secrets cause more damage sometimes. 2y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick There's always 3 sides to every story: his, hers, & the truth. June isn't a child anymore and while you don't want to sour her memories, she needs to know that dad wasn't perfect. If there's mental illness (or weird supernatural circumstances) she needs to know. What if it affects June, too? Mom seemed happy about the pregnancy, so perhaps she would've stayed anyway. Mistake or not, June was loved & I hope she finds that comforting. 2y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick yes his hers the truth!!! I hope she feels loved by the end of this all. 2y
Read4life I feel like June is on the periphery of the ‘new‘ family. This sheds some light on the moms actions. Has the mom not made an effort to include June—I‘m thinking of the conversations in French & the long cooking and cuddling ‘dates‘ with Toddy— or has June turned away from it? 2y
DebinHawaii So many secrets. It does explain her mom‘s behavior more. To @Read4life ‘s point-is June being left out or is she distancing herself? Yes, I think her father has mental health issues & if it is something that is hereditary, June should be told. 2y
Sparklemn I agree that the dad had mental health issues. While I'm not loving the book, there are a few storylines that I'm interested in seeing where they go. One is the mental illness aspect. 2y
TheBookHippie @Read4life very good point. She‘s on the outside it seems. 2y
TheBookHippie @Sparklemn I am with you I want to see how this plays out. 2y
julieclair I'm wondering if the dad, and all the generations before him, had some supernatural compulsion to wander. And when he tells Nameless that June is "not like us", he means she doesn't have that same compulsion. She can go to college and settle down in one place. 2y
TheBookHippie @julieclair That‘s good. Maybe. 2y

So Mike (Saul) is the tutor now and really the dick line? Really? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Who knew making out is only three minutes ?

These two parts 🤯🤦🏻‍♀️ necessary? True to life?

Am I too old for this?

Did I throw the book?

Thoughts did either thing catch you off guard ?

vlwelser We are definitely not the target audience for this. Also I get why this author is mega popular but I had never heard of this book. 2y
AmyG Oh, I am definitely too old. I skim parts of the book. 2y
TheBookHippie @AmyG 🤣🤣🏆💯 2y

TheBookHippie @vlwelser right 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️oops 2y
mollyrotondo Definitely too old for this book. I like the fantastical elements but the teen drama and the teen romance is so bleh. I don‘t care. Just want to know what‘s up with the father and the feud. I don‘t even care about having Saul around. He seems useless to me lol 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick So I might be perpetually 12, because I absolutely giggled & highlighted the dick conversation. 🤣 I wonder if her mom & Toddy would really care much if she was having ot with Saul. If Saul can help June realize there's life beyond Five Fingers I won't consider him a total waste. I am enjoying their budding relationship more than the whimsical memory parts. 2y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo it seems odd to me 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
DebinHawaii It definitely makes me feel old. Also it seems like a small enough town that her mother & Toddy would have heard from someone that the son of the family‘s arch enemies was back & think that Mike looks familiar & figure it out but I guess they were not that involved with the actual feud. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
Sparklemn @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I don't think her mom and Toddy would care. The feud was her father's. 2y
Sparklemn @DebinHawaii I was thinking the same thing. No way they wouldn't have heard he came back. But maybe they do know it's Saul and don't care. 2y
Sparklemn @mollyrotondo I also like the fantastical elements and hate the teen romance. I'm way too old. 2y
julieclair Yup. Too old. All I really wanna know is what happened at the waterfall. Why have they both been forbidden to go anywhere near it? 2y
