The Fog
The Fog | James Herbert
The peaceful life of a village in Wiltshire is suddenly shattered by a disaster which strikes without reason or explanation, leaving behind it a trail of misery and horror. A yawning, bottomless crack spreads through the earth, out of which creeps a fog that resembles no other. Whatever it is, it must be controlled; for wherever it goes it leaves behind a trail of disaster as hideous as the tragedy that marked its entry into the world. The fog, quite simple, drives people insane.

The Fog is nothing if not dramatic: the opening sequence sees an English village cleaved in two by an earthquake. From then on the action just gets more and more chilling.

Not to be confused with the John Carpenter film of the same name. Besides the title they couldn't be more different: The film is set on the American coast and is about a pirate curse; this book is set in England and concerns a fog that wreaks havok with people's sanity.

What would happen if you were allowed to act on all your impulses without regard for the consequences?

The first of his that I read and I can still remember that scene in the school gym. Gave me sleepless nights at the time. One of approx 800 books I gave away when I got married [sigh].

I admit when I picked this book that I got it confused with the 1980 film and it probably wasn‘t the best choice of bedtime reading. Despite being incredibly graphic in its descriptions of murder and suicide, the story of a fog that produces insanity before death and the race to understand and contain was compelling and this was a gripping read.

Mistermandolin Wow. This brings back the memories. The first of his books that I read and still my favourite. 4y
veritysalter @Mistermandolin It was my first try of James Herbert and I will definitely read more, although I‘m not sure I can handle “The Rats” at the moment (at least not until I‘ve caught the huge, brave one that‘s decided to move from the allotments to my garden). I‘ve got a real taste for horror at the moment. The Stepford Wives is next on my TBR. 4y
veritysalter @Mistermandolin also, welcome to Listy. 4y

Loved this spooky commute to work, through a park blanketed by fog with other people appearing as dark, blurry shapes in the distance.

I would never have survived more than 5 minutes as a character in the tagged book, but coffee and a muffin-related sugar rush gave me the courage I needed on this occasion 😁

Reggie That is pretty creepy. 5y
