Fans of Dan Simmons THE TERROR will love ARARAT, the thrilling tale of an adventure that goes awry. When a newly engaged couple climbs Mount Ararat in Turkey, an avalanche forces them to seek shelter inside a massive cave uncovered by the snow fall. The cave is actually an ancient, buried ship that many quickly come to believe is really Noah s Ark. But when a team of scholars, archaeologists, and filmmakers make it inside the ark for the first time, they discover an elaborate coffin in its recesses and when they break it open, they find that the cadaver within is an ugly, misshapen thing and it has horns. A massive blizzard blows in, trapping them in that cave thousands of meters up the side of a remote mountain but they are not alone."

Um, what the flippin' heck did I just read?

This was not my cup of tea although supernatural thrillers usually are my thing.

And that ending-yes, it's a twist but really? Golden went there??

I think I'll pass on the rest of this series.

Man, I need a palate cleanser next!

So far, this book is just okay but I'm just getting into the heart of the book. So we'll see if it picks up.

I got this without reading the blurb. My assumption was it had to do with mountain climbing in Turkey. Turns out it was a horror novel based around the discovery of (possibly Noah's) Ark. It was a great surprise. A creepy fun book that kept me up late reading (til I had to download a tame book to read for a few chapters so I could actually go to sleep without worrying about what was hiding in the dark waiting to get me).

Taking a break from my longer term readings for this book recommendation....I started last night and am already halfway through. Everything else is taking so much longer, it‘s nice to take a break to read a fast paced, cinematic, very creepy novel. It‘s blurbed by Scott Smith, so I was sold, and shares some of my favorite elements of The Ruins.

🎧 OK ... this is horror. An avalanche on a Mountain in Turkey reveals what appears to be Noah‘s Ark then the fast paced mystery takes off and you‘re left with a story that‘s a mash up of The Thing & The Exorcist. There‘s nothing holy about this book in fact quite the opposite. Pretty good horror book with a great surprise ending that makes you wonder if there‘s going to be a scary sequel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

And just to be fair, I have to include my failed challenge this year. For those of you who do #MountTBR on Goodreads, this is Mount Ararat...which to successfully climb I had to read 48 books from my backlog that I owned before the beginning of 2019..no new buys, no library books, just from my own personal TBR pile of books.

I fell short this year, no summit for me. Better luck next year. 🧗‍♀️

#FailedChallenges2019

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘d definitely get distracted by library books 😋 5y

This book was fine. I finished it. I don‘t think it was terrible, but I also didn‘t care about any of the characters enough to worry about the consequences.

It's a supernatural thriller featuring an archaeological dig that discovers Noah's Ark. There's mayhem aplenty but I'd have liked a little deeper development of the premise.

The writing style was very comfortable and the tension and creep factor made it hard to put down. I found it hard to connect with any of the characters as there was a lot going on but that didn't make the book any less enjoyable.

For the #ReadAroundTheWorld challenge, February means #Turkey! This was an audible deal@of the day, which seemed easier than digging through my TBR stacks for a different Turkish delight of a read! This one is straight-up genre fiction with the Ark uncovered after an earthquake but all is not what it seems... atrocious performance for accents and women‘s voices but otherwise entertaining and well suited for October #audiocoloring. @JenP

Perhaps not the most elegant book I‘ve read, but a great horror novel! Consistent from start to finish, if you like it at the beginning you will most likely like it by the end as well. It was perhaps a bit lacking in details concerning the actual practicalities of working at high altitudes in severe cold, but that‘s okay.

I‘m REALLY enjoying this book. I‘m 1/3 in and it‘s both spooky, mysterious and interesting! It‘s got a low rating on Litsy though, so I wonder if it will all go to shit soon. So far so very good though 🤗

This isn't a stand out book but the further I get, the more hooked I am at all the little tensions and dramas boiling over against a background of unknown horror. Plus exciting archaeology site, that's always a really fun element in stories.

Adventure hunters and a team of scientists uncover Noah's ark and let loose a demon that is buried within.
This book was pretty scary, I can deal with human monsters ok but spiritual ones are frightening! About halfway through the book until the end I had a knot in my stomach. One element of the book kept me from making it a pick though. If you like a good scare, this is the book for you.

vivastory This was definitely a so-so for me too. Have you read Sarah Lotz's White Road? It's a hiking terror novel & a solid pick 7y

I finished this book in my van this morning before heading in to work. It was a page turner from start to finish! It was a great horror story with all the important ingredients- solid adventure, isolated and creepy locale (a cave with the remains of Noah's Ark high up Mt. Ararat), psychological horror and some gritty violence.
And OMG that ending!
I really enjoyed this and will watch out for more from Christopher Golden.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Tim Powers also has an amazing supernatural spy novel centering around Mt. Ararat 7y

After an earthquake uncovers a cave inside Mt. Ararat, scientists and government race to be the first to discover what's inside. They do find the remains of a boat. It may or may not be Noah's ark, but what else they find is what drives this horror-filled story. This needs to be made into a movie.

So I just finished reading Ararat by Christopher Golden. I also just wrote a (pan) review of Nancy Holder's Dead in the Water. I knew that Golden had also written this terrible Buffy book I happen to own, and when I pulled it out, lo and behold, he had a co-author! That is what Milan Kundera calls a "beautiful coincidence!"

As a horror book I didn't feel the tension or enough fear and the Rosemary's baby ending is not very exciting, just creepy and feels like a Gambit for a sequel
