Marvelous Land of Oz | L Frank Baum
33 posts | 71 read | 12 to read
Few fantasy lands have captured our hearts and imaginations as has the marvelous land of Oz. For over four generations, children and adults alike have reveled in the magical adventures of its beloved folk. Now, for the first time in over seventy years, the second book about Oz is presented here in the same deluxe format as the rare first edition, complete with all 16 of the original John R. Neill color plates, its colorful pictorial binding, and the many black-and-white illustrations that bring it to joyous life.First issued in 1904, L. Frank Baum's The Marvelous Land of Oz is the story of the wonderful adventures of the young boy named Tip as he travels throughout the many lands of Oz. Here he meets with our old friends the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman, as well as some new friends like Jack Pumpkinhead, the Wooden Sawhorse, the Highly Magnified Woggle-Bug, and the amazing Gump. How they thwart the wicked plans of the evil witch Mombi and overcome the rebellion of General Jinjur and her army of young women is a tale as exciting and endearing today as it was when first published over eighty years ago.Afterword by Peter Glassman. A facsimile of the rare first edition, complete with all 16 original color plates, a colorful pictorial binding, and over 125 of Neill's drawings. A Books of Wonder(R) Classic.

Throwback to yesterday, when I reread a chunk of the second Oz book and saw what the world of tequila seltzers has to offer me. This particular one was too sweet. Hopefully the prickly pear can won‘t hit me the same way.

I got the ebook from Project Gutenberg and it‘s got the WEIRDEST formatting. According to the included facsimile pages, I read over 150 pages yesterday. According to Kobo, I read 30 and I‘m only 16% into the book. 🤷‍♀️

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Been reading Oz to my youngest kiddo. He‘s a big Jack Pumpkinhead fan. I have always been partial to the sawhorse. 2mo

#2022Book113
In some ways I liked this book more than the first in the series, though that could be because there‘s no movie-related nostalgia influencing my thoughts about this one. While I found one of the main characters annoying, I liked the twist with his character at the end.

SamAnne I loved the whole series as a kid. Reread them so many times! 2y

#SeriesRead2022 @TheSpineView

After finishing this book, I remember watching a movie based on it as a kid. Now I'm determined to find it and rewatch it. 😁

This series is so much fun. I love how almost anything goes in the Land of Oz. Need a horse? No problem, make one out of wood and use magic to make it alive. Whimsical dialogue, outrageous characters, and fun adventures are all perfectly handled in the second book to this classic series.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but these books are not for me. I don‘t find them whimsical or charming, just downright tedious. Luckily they are fairly short books, but I think it‘s fair to say I won‘t be reading any more. 1⭐️

“With the point of his knife he made two round eyes, a three-cornered nose, and a mouth shaped like a new moon. The face, when completed, could not have been considered strictly beautiful; but it wore a smile so big and broad, and was so Jolly in expression, that even Tip laughed as he looked admiringly at his work.” 🎃

I started this iBook as a read between work shifts, now arriving at the end while fully enjoying the story. Tip adventures with the Tin-Man and Scarecrow, with some new friends (Jack Pumpkinhead, Sawhorse, and Woggle-Bug) traveling in an enchanted flying sofa Gump. 😄💗 The magic wordplay and logic conversations are hilarious fun! I was glad to get reading this Book 2, as I'll sure keep on for the full Oz series in iBooks.

MandaMT I read this series so many times as a kid! I love the characters in the later books. NBC did one season of a show called Emerald City, which did a lot of creative stuff with lesser known characters. 5y
Dan_SpiderCrafts @MandaMT I remember catching bits of the Emerald City show. It looked really cool to seek out again sometime. I just noticed now, there was a 1985 'Return to Oz' movie I'd love to see as well. 5y
MandaMT @AlobelThee I saw that movie as a kid. It creeped me out. I forget which book it‘s based on, but I remember the Gnome king is in it. 5y

I kind of liked this story about Tipp and his adventures with Nick Chopper (Tin Man) and the Scarecrow.
Not sure why I waited so long to read this series I guess I thought it would be boring since I don‘t care for the movie.

LazyDays Tipp was the cutest.💗 5y

“Presently Jack Pumpkinhead became uneasy.

‘I wonder if riding through the air is liable to spoil pumpkins,‘ he said.

‘Not unless you carelessly drop your head over the side,” answered the Woggle-Bug. ‘In that event your head would no longer be a pumpkin, for it would become a squash.‘”

Work had called 15 minutes late, the other day, to ask me about starting another hour later. 😛❄️ I was fine with sitting in the stairwell, getting to the iBooks digital of The Marvelous Land of Oz. I've sure waited long enough to get around to this one! 🎃 I'll tend to save these for outside break occasions. Now 2 years ago, I read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz on a bench near the Swiss Chalet job; arriving early on the bus.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk This is one of my favorites from the whole series! Love Jack, the Sawhorse, and the Gump! 6y

This book was nonsense!!! Lol, I must have started it at least 2 years ago when I got the whole collection for $3. I read the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and that was cool. This was crazy! Mombi, Captain Jinjur and her knitting needles, that Woggle Bug and the Gump...lol, I know it all had a purpose but what a strange story!!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm on book 9 and they are hit or miss but I love this one. The Sawhorse has always been a favorite and I always get stoked when he shows up in later books. If only the gender roles weren't such a nightmare. If someone had written this in 2017, people would march against it! 8y

things about this book that I didn't know until today:
1) original title was The Marvelous Land Of Oz and it's the sequel to the Wizard of Oz.
2) the "popular edition" has the original copyright of 1904 but was probably published in the late 20s or early 30s. it also has black and white plates instead of color plates.
3) it would be worth more money if i had the dust jacket (oh, well)!

rubyslippersreads I think any collectible book is more valuable with the dust jacket. Believe it or not, people used to throw them away. 🙀 (edited) 8y

I cast another coin wish, in the iBooks well of classic wonders. This is the text only version of L. Frank Baum's Oz book # 2, while price variations should include illustrations. I'm going to save it though for after I finish reading Gregory Maguire's own 'Out of Oz' in the Wicked series. Comic spinoffs and other variations do feature one of Oz's original lead royals, and yet a lesser known history story, in The Marvelous Land of Oz. 🎃🔮🎀

4⭐️- while it was very slow for the majority of the book, I did enjoy the story in its conclusion. The characters are quite lovable, and Baum comes up with the most outlandish names (H M Wogglebug T E, Mr Knowitall to name a few).
