Wings of Ebony
Wings of Ebony | J Elle
In this riveting, keenly emotional debut fantasy, a Black teen from Houston has her world upended when she learns about her godly ancestry--and with evil sinking its claws into humans and gods alike, she'll have to unearth the magic of her true identity to save both her worlds. "Make a way out of no way" is just the way of life for Rue. But when her mother is shot dead on her doorstep, life for her and her younger sister changes forever. Rue's taken from her neighborhood by the father she never knew, forced to leave her little sister behind, and whisked away to Ghazan--a hidden island of magic wielders. Rue is the only half-god, half-human there, where leaders protect their magical powers at all costs and thrive on human suffering. Miserable and desperate to see her sister on the anniversary of their mother's death, Rue breaks Ghazan's sacred Do Not Leave Law and returns to Houston, only to discover that Black kids are being forced into crime and violence. And her sister, Tasha, is in danger of falling sway to the very forces that claimed their mother's life. Worse still, evidence mounts that the evil plaguing East Row is the same one that lurks in Ghazan--an evil that will stop at nothing until it has stolen everything from her and everyone she loves. Rue must embrace her true identity and wield the full magnitude of her ancestors' power to save her neighborhood before the gods burn it to the ground.

It took me a minute to get through but that‘s on me, not the book. I loved Rue as a main character, and her motivation to help her family and her home was very relatable. I wish the magic system and the world was fleshed out a bit, but maybe that comes more in book two, which I will be reading.

Great YA fantasy that addresses several social injustices as well. I love when an author can use a fantasy world to point out the troubles in our own.

Rue is an excellent character. She battles with herself as she feels torn between two worlds, but ultimately her love for her family is her driving force for all her actions, good or bad.

I would have liked more clarification about the magic system, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment.

A book from my goddaughter and my 2 person book club. 🙂 I liked it. Fantasy is not my jam but Jada loves it. She really enjoyed it a lot and wanted to read the sequel which we will likely do later in the summer. I liked it. I would give it a solid 3.5/5 stars. I am curious enough to want to read the second one though. 🙂

RebL Book 2 is also on my TBR. 2y

The teens I work with selected this book for discussion in Feb & to meet the author in March. I would very much like to NOT wait until Feb to find out what the teens think. Phew!

LibrarianRyan I was on the street team for this book. I really liked it. What I find interesting is that so many members of the team including the author were Team Julius or Team Jamal, like there was a love triangle. But I didn't see there being a triangle. I didn't even really see this book as being about romance, but more about family. I did have to have a cinnamon roll explained to me. I felt really old. 3y
RebL @LibrarianRyan This is not a thought that occurred to me, but, yes. At least one teen in our group will bring up the love triangle. Metaphorically, Team Julius or Team Jamal sets the stage for a struggle with Rue's identity as from both worlds. Can she have it all or will she have to choose? I'll check the budget to see if we can get copies of the sequel. lol. 3y
LibrarianRyan @RebL I agree with the struggle. And I probably would have brought it up if I was reading for book club. But I think for the street team, many had reader earlier versions, where that was more of an issue. I hope your book club likes it. I really did. I also really liked how it was suitable for younger teens. Her next book (not including the sequel that just came out) is MG. 3y

I‘m late on my June recap! There were lots of chunksters on my list last month, so I did not finish as many as in previous months, and no bingo, but lots of really great reads! Tagged book was my last of the month, and a #blamelitsy pick, too. Lots to chew on with themes of colonialism and appropriation, plus a rollicking storyline. Now, on to July!

I heard an interview with the author where she described this as black panther/Wonder Woman. It started slow but I just sped up the reading speed and was definitely invested in the second half. I found the main character a little frustrating but she was a product of a lot of challenges. I‘ll be reading the next one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was an ambitious stand alone that may have played better as multiple books. When Rue‘s mother dies the father she‘s never known brings her back to his magical homeland. She runs into trouble when she returns to see her sister. That‘s all in the 1st chapter.
I liked the premise and there were some great passages, but there was so much zapping between urban Texas and the fantasy world that it was a bit confusing.

I really enjoyed the characters believable voice through the audible narration. It helped to hear this as it was meant to be heard. I need to read more books like this. It shows racial injustice and adds a magic element. While injustice is not a fantasy and needs to be corrected. This book showed the fight, the poverty, and will of community.

This book has been touch and go for me, but this chapter where Rue tells Bri everything she‘s learned about the unwritten parts of history, and Bri gets defensive... very impactful. We‘ve been led to see her as “one of the good ones”, which makes this critique stand out all the more.

Read for the Barnes & Noble Book Club. I struggled to get through this one. The pacing was odd and disjointed. Although I appreciate that this is a debut author, #ownvoices and has a message about racism and social justice I didn‘t enjoy the characters (except for Ms. Leola and the descriptions of all the desserts she baked), the plot or the entire explanation of how Rue, her family and the island got their magic. This was a 2 star read ⭐️⭐️

So good! Bahni Turpin is an excellent narrator. The story is fast paced. Elle even wrote a language to go with the fantasy setting. Loved that this fantasy touched on: colonialism, racism, belonging, family + community, allyship, confronting one‘s privilege. Loads packed into this page turner! I‘d have liked more detailed world building and could have done without the half hearted love triangle, but these are small complaints. Recommended!

Big thanks to @LibrarianRyan for putting this book on my radar! I loved it!

This was a unique YA fantasy book with the main character, Rue, from two worlds - one is the hood she was raised in and other is a secret magical island called Ghizon. I found the duality of the two worlds Rue tries to save fascinating. They both reflect modern issues in different ways. I loved the realness of her relationships with her dad, her sister, her friends. ⤵️

MeganAnn 1 of 2: They are sometimes hard and gritty and real in a way that isn‘t always captured in YA books. And I appreciated that the story was more about those relationships and about Rue finding her strength than it was about romantic relationships. 4y
MeganAnn 2 of 2: The only thing I would have liked more of was more detail in the world building and magic systems... I found it hard to picture Ghizon because I didn‘t have enough detail. But, that would have slowed down the fast paced storyline which was part of what made this book hard to put down. So, it didn‘t bother me enough to take off points. I‘m planning to give this to my son to read next! (edited) 4y
LibrarianRyan @MeganAnn I had a very similar opinion. 😁 4y

I went into this not knowing much about it, just strictly on @LibrarianRyan 's recommendation. This was really cool! I called one thing pretty early on, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story at all.

LibrarianRyan I‘m glad you enjoyed it. It was way different than I thought it would be but I still really liked it. 4y
night_shift @LibrarianRyan I didn't know what I was expecting, but it was definately exciting and I'm interested in seeing what the sequel brings - so thanks for the suggestion! 4y
LibrarianRyan The “crew” made such a big deal about the love triangle and picking a team Jamal or a team Julius I thought there would be more to that aspect of the book. To mean this was way more about her relationship to her father and sister than to any boy. So that surprised me. It also wasn‘t as “ghetto” as I thought it would be. You get a bit of that but apparently the first draft was darker and Rue actually had wings. I look forward to book 2 4y
See All 7 Comments
night_shift @LibrarianRyan yeah, I'm not a huge fan of love triangles, so pretty happy it didn't focus on that! Maybe the wings will come in the 2nd book, that would be cool. That one death scene in the warehouse was pretty dark, but other than that. I'm curious now what was taken out! 4y
LibrarianRyan @UnidragonFrag nope. Wings not making an appearance. She didn‘t tell us much. But originally Julius was dealing and mixed up with the gang and it was a bit more violent and older YA rather than the MG-YA it currently is. Also the sister was an add in. Originally she didn‘t exist. 4y
night_shift @LibrarianRyan ah, ok, well dang! If Julius had, that would've been an interesting side plot. I can't imagine how it would be without the sister, she's pretty important to the plot. Huh! Sounds like it went through a lot of rewrite! 4y
