Brother | Ania Ahlborn
From the bestselling horror author of Within These Walls and The Bird Eater comes a brand-new novel of terror that follows a teenager determined to break from his familys unconventionaland deeply disturbingtraditions.Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and its served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops dont knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing as to whats buried in the Morrows backyard. But nineteen-year-old Michael Morrow isnt like the rest of his family. He doesnt take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees. Michael pines for normalcy, and hes sure that someday hell see the world beyond West Virginia. When he meets Alice, a pretty girl working at a record shop in the small nearby town of Dahlia, hes immediately smitten. For a moment, he nearly forgets about the monster hes become. Ania Ahlborn is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. I love how all her books are so different, she keeps it interesting. I liked this one. It was pretty violent, and although I guessed the twist pretty early on, it was still fun to see it all unfold. Lots of trigger warnings.

When I‘m extra busy or stressed (I‘m moving over the next two weeks!), I like to read horror or dark thrillers. Something way outside of ordinary life. Does anyone have any favorites you can recommend?

Bonus points for something grisly and crazy, like these two books: The Troop by Nick Cutter and Brother by Ania Ahlborn. I read both of these last year and even though they were gross, I loved them.

Thank you, Litsy friends!

tjwill Have you read Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates? It is dark and disturbing. 9mo

🌟blech🤮. Texas Chainsaw massacre meets Old Boy. Predictable, old tropes,no character development so I just don‘t care. If you‘re gonna do horror, don‘t reuse old stories. Be original!

I have never read a book as dark and disturbing as this one. Michael Morrow lives with his family in the Appalachian woods. They are NOT like other families, and that is pretty clear from page one. Michael is a sympathetic character even as he commits acts of atrocity and there are zero moments of levity, but holy moly, what a read. Reader beware.
This is my first completed book for the #14books14weeks2023 challenge

Super dark and incredibly gory, wow. But really good. I couldn‘t read it fast enough. I‘m always amazed/weirded out by stories with bad guys that pull at my heart strings and despite the wickedness of this family, I crossed my fingers for Michael Morrow.

This book was painfully predictable, to the point I couldn't even enjoy it because I knew what was gunna happen. Also from other people's reviews saying it was so violent and gruesome, and crazy cannibals, I expected waaay too much from this book. I was extremely let down. Compared to other books/shows/movies I've seen, this was pretty tame. Some parts were okay kinda gross.. but nothing I haven't seen before. Total letdown 2/5 stars

Well what can I say but this book was everything a horror book should be! The sense of dread from the first page to the last was so satisfying!
This book was horrifying and sick and awesome!
Thanks @Reggie for gifting this to me and introducing me to a new horror author, I will definitely be reading more of Ahlborns work. ♥️

Reggie I would suggest The Shuddering, The Devil Crept In, or Seed. I‘m so glad you liked this. The way that whole ending comes together. Just brutal. 2y

#21DaysofHorror Day10. Imagine being a 3yo boy just playing outside your house when you get abducted by a family who tells you that your parents put you outside because they didn‘t want you anymore. So you‘re heartbroken but grow to love the new family even though they are a sadistic serial killer family. And you don‘t know you are in a sick competition with a brother whose games will turn this story into a horror Greek tragedy. Dark, but so good.

I just spend a perfect sunny day reading this extremely unsettling book. I can‘t say much about it, and it‘s impossible te recommend but wow, did I have a good time with this fucked-up family 😱 And under the violent surface it is a very sad novel as well. Not my regular cup of tea but I see why Ania Ahlborn is so popular.

A portrait of a very disturbed family in Appalachia, especially the dynamic between siblings Michael & Ray. Ahlborn is one of my favorite contemporary horror authors, but I'm always a bit reluctant to recommend. As is the case with all of her books, Brother is deeply unsettling. If you aren't comfortable with horror, you'll want to sit this one out. If you're looking for a great horror novel, look no further.

Cinfhen Thanks for the warning ⚠️ I‘m out 😂 4y
vivastory Side note: Am I wrong in thinking she's underrated? I see her mentioned on here frequently, but nowhere else. Not even on booktube...🤔 4y

Alicepondpoe I've read all of her books. She's a favorite of mine. She writes horror so different and always finds a way to twist the same old horror tropes. Amazing books, amazing author ❤ 4y
Reggie This is my favorite of hers and it feels like, the darkest of all of her books. 4y
Reggie And P.S. yes, one would think Stephen King or someone of the like would have shouted her out or blurbed her or something. She‘s definitely slept on. 4y
JacqMac She is one of the few authors who really creeps me out. I love her. And I agree, she‘s way underrated. If not for Litsy I never would have heard of her. 4y
vivastory @TrishB I read it in a sitting...which led to a sleepless night last night 😬😂 4y
vivastory @Alicepondpoe Exactly! She always has a fresh take on the horror tropes. Very effectively done. 4y
vivastory @Reggie it's definitely the darkest. I'm not sure if it's my favorite. I would rank Brother, The Seed & Devil Crept In equally. I will say that Brother does seem to be one of her better realized books. 4y
vivastory @JacqMac She's pretty reliable when I need a refill of nightmare fuel. I think I was browsing in the library & stumbled upon The Devil Crept In & I remembered hearing good things about it on Litsy. 4y

Dark Twisted Brutal. No silver lining to the dark cloud here. Ania builds an impressive tale of Morrow family who commits heinous crimes together. She makes you sympathize with one member, who you can clearly tell is not like the rest. The dread just builds throughout the plot and ends with an ultimate twist at the end, one that atleast I didnt see coming at all.
The tension is so palpable and continues building until the last moment.

ShelfRighteous This book makes you connect emotionally to the main character and you will be left bereft at the end. Tho left angry and heartbroken at the end, this book surely kept me turning pages for more and would be recommended to everyone loving a good creepy story. 5y

What a wild ride! The book grabbed me from the start and I finished it in one night. I was rooting for Michael to escape the clutches of his family. I couldn't believe how evil they were. 😮 whoa!!! What a dark, disturbing, horrific book. I don‘t know that I can say I enjoyed it, but I couldn‘t turn away or put it down. Not for the faint hearted or slightly scaredy-cat folks!!
Thanks @Reggie been on the tbr thanks to you.

Cathythoughts Oh dear ! I guess I will just have to stack it & see what happens 👍🏻😬 5y
erzascarletbookgasm I scrolled back to read @Reggie ‘s review..😨 5y
TrishB @Cathythoughts there are some very disturbing, stomach rolling scenes. I feel I have to share so you‘re warned! 5y

Djspens One of my alltime favorites.... In a dark and disturbing way..... I loved it! 5y
DGRachel I read a different book by this author in 2012 and I‘m still freaked out about it. I want to read more, but I‘m terrified. 😱 5y
Cathythoughts Ok so, I like thriller / suspense / family life ... horror is not really my genre ( plus I now too scrolled back to @Reggie review..... my one trigger is child psychological or physical abuse ...( in most cases ...) I think I‘d better unstack ! Thanks for the warnings Trish , @Reggie @erzascarletbookgasm 5y
TrishB @DGRachel I shall read others, I‘m waiting for a book to scare me rather than just gross me out! But probably not straight away!! 5y
TrishB @Cathythoughts definitely give it a miss 👍🏻 5y
DGRachel Seed definitely scared me. I don‘t remember being grossed out by anything, but it left me feeling very unsettled and it still makes my skin crawl to think about it. I didn‘t start tracking books in Goodreads until 2013 or 2014, but I remember where I was when I read this book! 5y
TrishB @DGRachel I‘ll bear that in mind! 5y
JennyM I‘m too scaredy cat for books like these 🙀 5y
TrishB @JennyM definitely don‘t read this! 5y
Reggie What a crazy tragedy of a read, huh? Glad it kept you reading. The others of hers that I‘ve read were not this intense. @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm definitely not a book for you ladies. 5y
TrishB @Reggie have you read Seed - the one that has freaked @DGRachel out? 5y
Reggie @TrishB I have not. But I have that one and and the Bird one waiting for me on kindle. And The Devil Crept In and The Shuddering are the other ones of hers I really liked. 5y
TrishB @Reggie I will be looking at others 👍🏻 5y

Mehso-so

While I found myself wanting to know what happened in this story, it couldn‘t seem to hold my attention for long. Took me over two weeks to read, which isn‘t very typical for me...maybe it‘s because I thought the story dragged out some or maybe it‘s because I picked up it during vacation? Not sure, but overall I thought it was an interesting, #creepy #horror story with an ending I really enjoyed.

Hour 18 Nightstand challenge! I usually only have my Kindle or whatever physical book I'm reading at the time. So instead here's a picture of my #24in48 stack on my beverage cart. Tea on the top, alcohol on the bottom! When I redid my living room my husband thought I was crazy when I said I was putting a drink cart in here. He gets it now! It's a great addition to the room! #neverdoubtme 😆

This was my second Ahlborn, and like the first (The Shuddering), it really made an impression on me. Micheal is a member of a truly messed-up family: they live in the Appalachians, isolated from the outside world, completely at the mercy of their cruel and abusive mother. Micheal was kidnapped at the age of 4, but is told that he was abandoned. He clings to the only family he knows despite the horrific conditions—but then he meets Alice.

Reggie Omg, I read this one during Halloween, and I was just left kinda shell shocked. So intense. 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @Reggie It is very intense! And I have to admit, I didn‘t snap to what was really going on on the farm until it was spelled out for me! Likewise with Reb‘s revenge. Did not see it coming! 6y
